Preface
Back in 2005, I stumbled upon a box with quite attractive artwork on it at Mission Models store. Back then the manufacturer was completely unknown to me, but prospect of building a model of first soviet MBT overcame all doubts. I should have trusted the gut...
After opening the box sealed with tough film, harsh reality came to be. Most of plastic sprues were covered with machine oil, details were chunky and barely resembled the real ones, though road wheels and sprockets were quite alright. And if that wasn't cruel enough, on the bottom of that hell pit there laid a pair of unearthly looking shapes made of black greasy rubber, which turned out to be the tracks. After coming to scale modeling age with mostly DML kits, I thought this could really test my modeling skills and gave it a try, but abandoned the project once Skif's version of T-64B turret had been assembled.

Nova days, there is plenty of aftermarket to build a decent replica of either T-64B or A. After gathering all the necessary AM goodies, I hope I can tackle this one now. So here is what I have:
T-64B Profipack with Eduard PE included. Miniarm T-64B turret with anti-radiation applique, Modelpoint R-123(173) antenna w/ base, 2A46M smooth bore 125mm barrel w/o thermal jacket, Soviet AFV stowage set

Miniarm pieces, there is no gun bridge anymore and my box came wit no instructions sheet (no big deal):

Miniarm supplied 3-piece barrel with thermal shroud (on the bottom) and MP's 2-piece offering:

Masterclub's excellent tracks set,
inner side:

Outer side:

T-64BV from tanksinmoscow.com Not very informative, but it features some details not seen in other sources.

Sometime ago I did the SKIF's T-64 AK version.
I had the same problems, track and plastic quality.

I stayed with the original tracks and the turret I gave some coats of Mr.Surfacer before painting.
The Fuel barrels were awful too, I wished I knew there was a metal gun barrel at the time.

But it's a cool tank, that Profit Pack version looks great, might do the other versions one day..

Anyway keep us posted on that build !

Links are up. Thank you for BTVT link, last time I checked there was blank link in gallery. Just the heads-up for anyone out there, the yahoo blogs have scaled down copies of pics from primeportal and several other sites with many incorrect captions to them.

Work begins. The kits front hull is just plain wrong. All detail around here unfortunately is either misplaced or over sized. Biggest obstacle so far was to reproduce area around driver's position. I used segment from Tamiya T-72 and some few scratch built pieces like viewing well, the periscope and wiring around it. Tamiya's front armor appears to have dead on accurate, 68 degrees, angle with respect to the normal plane, while Skif's piece is off by about two degrees. Fortunately it wasn't hard to align since Skif's plastic is so soft.
Turret ring sections on the sides have to be extended a bit or quite large gap between them and fuel cells will form.

New front hull details. Bolts are from Masterclub:

My solution to hull warping. Shaping under hot water and fan didn't help at all so:

Tamiya piece integrated with sheet plastic as a filling:

I finally got some free time to spare on this build.

A lot of work is necessary to get powerplant section correct:

Note that few specific bolts are still missing from engine deck:

Masterclub tracks have exceptional fit:

Miniarm turret in progress:

Absolutely fantastic George. I can't imagine doing this myself, there is so little left from the donor kit.

To the point you've already reached, I'm not sure the link will help but anyway a little more reference is not a pain http://www.t-64.de/frame-start.htm

Keep on posting !

Looking great so far.
One point; is it me or are your glacis towing hooks on upside down?

Mark

EDIT
(Oh, boy. Yup, it's me! I hadn't realized how different the tango six-four's hooks were from the five-five and six-two. I'm an idiot.)

as a builder who can't put glue two pieces together without leaving a gooey fingerprint, let me say this is yet another awesome build George! I always enjoy seeing projects like this. Keep up the amazing work!

Just a small update on the optics and wiring. Front hull tow hooks are now set correctly.
Note that windshield wipers are currently omitted for ease of painting.

New weld seams made from milliput putty. Old "plastic cement-styrene strip" trick just doesn't cut it for me anymore.

George,

Excellent work as always. Curious if you had looked at Accurate Armour's T-64B kit prior to your going this route? What are your thoughts on that kit? I have it partially completed and your work here is giving me some inspiration to get back to it but...Miniarm T-90 is on deck.

George, great work mate !

I love your modern Russian / Soviet builds - they are brilliant. I'd love to do some later on too.

Maybe a T-80U and a T-90A. That Miniarm stuff is sweeeeeeet

Cheers

Paul

Very, very impressive! Few modelers are so ambitious as to take a major dog of a kit and completely correct it, and the workmanship you've shown here is first rate!

Completely agree with Gary, very nice work on a very troublesome kit. Can't wait to see it in paint.
