It's an excellent idea. Especially with the less than perfect models I loose my interest to give justice with the details/weathering, so it would be beneficial to revisit a few builts...

OK, this seems really far fetched, but can I overhaul a kit that has been made but I bought it a garage sale? (Meaning someone else made the kit) Its a Abrams, but for the overhaul, I'm basing it off of an old N64 game "Battletanx" turning it into a what if.
Would that count, if so, I'm definitely in!

Cool idea,
Im going to jump in with a Taymia 1/35 M3A1 halftrack that I built back in highschool! (about 14 years ago). I was thinking of overhauling it a while back, so I had already started disassembling it, but didnt do anything further...ill hold on to it for Jan!
Ive got a Tank Workshop suspension set, Tank Workshop wheels with chains, Eduard PE set, and leftover bits from various Dragon halftracks I can use. I can stow her up with gear and cover most of the imperfections!
ill take a picture of her current state and post it up
should be fun!

Andy,
what a coincedence. I am working on a Tamiya M3A2, backdating it to a M3A1 for the Cold War Campaign! What are the main pitfalls with that Tamiya-kit?
This will be my first-ever US halftrack. I allready dislike the tracks, but do not know if there are any replacements for that available. The wheels are not to good looking either.

Overall, the kit is fairly decent and accurate. Tank Workshop many years ago (now owned by Tiger Models), did a suspension set that came with resin replacements for the idler and drive sprocket, plus resin one peice tracks. Honestly, when I got the resin, the tracks were horriable, and the kit tracks are not really that bad....they actully look that way in real life. So im just going to use the resin drive and idler wheels. Eduard made a PE set but that required you to assemble the drive and idler wheels from PE parts! somebody else made some resin ones...i cant remember off the top of my head.
As far as front wheels go, Hussar makes a set of 6 in one pack, so you would get enough for several projects (though 2 of the sets are only good for early M2/M3 halftracks...pre D-Day). they are also the absoulute best detailed, but are probally designed for the Dragon kits. The Tank workshop ones are not bad...basicly resin copies of the taymia kit parts with snow chains.
The one big issue with the kit itself is the molded on "ladders" on the rear side panels. These should not be there at all. Most modelers would find a cheap Taymia M21 halftrack and take the panels from the M21 and use it on the M3. Im just going to cut them off....then pile on a lot of gear to cover up area where they were located.
As for the rest of the kit, its just the ususal bits of detail that is needed to bring it up to todays standard.
there are a coule of verlinden sets that make some different conversions of the M3 (command, and maybe an ambulance?)

here is some pictures of the current state of the halftrack...
I should probally make a quick diorama with this thing sitting in the woods with rust and such all over it! then "find" it and "restore" it, heh heh...

here is the tray of parts that came from it and what ill use on it... some tank workshop items, eduard pe...plus I have lots of spare parts from a couple of Dragon halftracks I can use to dress it up a bit.

Hello:
Wayne, Ron, Andy, & Lewis, I will enter with this:
And try to turn it into this using plasticard:

Does anyone have any spares laying around for a Tamiya M3A2 Halftrack tracks and wheels that I could use to finish this, I have plenty of other stuff to trade.

hey robert...
no, i think (if im looking at your pic right) you are showing the outside hub that the rubber tyre is pressed onto. I need the part that is put inside the hub from the back, that then slips on the axle.

hey robert...ill give you a part number tonight. looking at your pictures, and mine, the front frame looks the same, so I dont think its installed on yours yet either.
now, if your missing the wheels, you may not have the parts because they were inside the wheels....just like mine :-(
Dont stress it...ill still get you some parts. I can scratch the part I need to use the resin wheels.
chat later

Hi Lewis:
Nice to be here, the conversion does not look so hard now. It may turn into a beast once started, you know they take on a lifer of their own when I try to cut and glue.
