Can anyone id any of these trucks used as heavy technicals in Lebanon and Somalia?
Also any 1/35 or close kits/diecasts available?

The first one looks like a Chevrolet C65 :

The third one appears to be a M39 series truck :

and the next to last one reminds me of a French-built Berliet GLR truck...

That last one looks like a Fiat tactical truck of some sort, but there is also a Spanish series that looks very similar. I figure with it being in Somalia, however, the Italian type is more likely. I'm sorry that I don't know the model name, but if you do a google image search for "Fiat 6x6" the first image looks very similar.

Thanks for the replies and photos given me some fresh ideas of trucks to look out for.

Joe I think the Spanish truck you are thinkng of is the Pegaso, the Somali's definately used the 4x4 version ,dont think they used the 6x6, this was my first thought though.

Actually I think some of the trucks were Etheopian army..

Yeah, I stumbled upon some pictures of Pegasos later, but they seemed pretty clearly not to be it. I'm pretty sure its one of these Fiats, but it seems impossible to find a picture of one. Maybe I'm wrong, looking back at it, the wheels closer match the Pegaso trucks.

I had thought Fiat model number in question might have been in the ACM series. Here's an Fiat ACP 70 for comparison:

The wheels are decidedly different.

It also doesn't help that Fiat's subsidiary Iveco bought out the parent company of Pegaso in the 1990s.

According to the caption, it's a Fiat 6605 TM 69 (6x6)...But all the TM 69s I've seen so far have an extended cab like the one below (the TM 69 is an artillery tractor)....

Yeah, those were the ones which put the thought into my head in the first place. The wheels look much more similar to the vehicle in question too. They don't look anything like the current Fiat ACP/ACM type wheels.

Thanks again gents your research skills are amazing, I had been looking and come up with nothing that looked like the Fiat.
The next part is to find a 1/35 version along with a twin 37mm antiaircraft gun., Iam guessing the chances of finding anything are going to be non existant.

At least you could use RealModel's M813 kit as a base to build the guntruck #3...

I wonder how hard it would be to convert/backdate an italeri 5 tonner or maybe an afv duece and half, seen a how to on making a m54, on this site as i recall.

I know this might sound a biggie,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but have you thought about scratchbuilding the truck.

From what I see of this truck that Frenchy found



all the profiles look reasonably flat with simple square shapes to work from. The hardest part would appear to be the front of the cab and the wheels.

Should be simple to knock up once a few of the principle dimensions are known,

I could probably make the "square" bits such as cargo bed, possibly cab, but the wheels would be beyond me.

It's only a matter of patience (and a bit of luck) This truck is fitted with 14.00R20 tires, just like M939A1 and A2 trucks, so maybe you could use one of the available AM wheel sets designed for Italeri's M939 "Big Foot" truck kit and modify the hub ? RealModel and MR Models (among others) have released such sets.

BTW, another easier (and cheaper) option would be using AFV Club's M35A2 with a ZU-23-2 :

Frenchy has been fabulous on this site for anyone looking for info or pics,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, even myself.

As for the wheel, look up the scratchbuilding forum and look for the wheel making hints and tips. A few great scratchbuilders on here make their own using a disc cutter to cut sheet plastic into a series of discs of the right diameter (plus a fraction to allow for shaping and adjustment) with and or without a centre depending on the the wheel and hub configuration.

Glue the discs together to form the right thickness and fix to a hand power drill using the collet to trap the disc through a centre hole.

Using sandpaper and or tools, shape the discs to the correct tyre profile and diameter with the outer tyre diameter.

Draw out the tyre tread on plan and rap around the tyre and using the right thickness of bit carve out the tyre tread around the tyre.

If you know anyone who does resin casting get them to cast the rest.

Either that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, get the right dimensions and ask on here if anyone makes something similar of the right sizes as aftermarket resin pieces.

Italeri - are you listening!? Maybe Revell of Germany will do it. They are doing a great job reproducing the modern German Army in 1/35th and 1/72nd scale. Keep it coming.
