Anyone ever use a 1/32 diecast truck as a base for a conversion?

Yes, there are also the 1/34 diecast First Gear trucks that can be used and are very detailed.

Ive got a couple of the tamiya 1/32 motorised unimogs and revll unimog with the intention of making one of the plo unimogs, unfortunately the chassis and wheels are completely different.

Be careful of the Tamiya motorized "1/32" vehicles. They all have the same chassis and wheels and are made to fit the chassis. Most are much smaller than 1/32.

Also check out 1/32 pick-up truck models to make some of the lighter technicals. I used a couple 1/32 Toyota pickups to make a crew cab SF truck as used in A'tsan and have half a cab and bed left over that will become a Somali technical as well. You can see them and other options in this tread.

Good luck.

Hi again
Yes I know that unimog kit, dont have one but saw them at Telford the other week, very tempting but its a pity they did the 404 version i think they could have sold more 406 or 416 versions, at least to me anyway.
I cant say ive seen a acmat like that got a few pics in books with a single 20mm mounted and was recently sent a couple of pics of a Chad army versions with zu23 mounted.

Hi Gino
Ive read your conversion thread before, excellent build by the way, and would love to see your left over bits turned into a technical.
Got a few Toyotas in the process of being technicalised and a datsun that i shortened a bit to bring it more in line with my 1/35 landrovers.
As far as the tamiya kits go ive had mixed results when buying the kits unseen of the web, some have looked ok next to the landrovers others are much bigger, there seem to be two sizes of chassis depending it seems random as to which size they scale to.
The nissan king cab looks good with the wheel arches reduced in width.
Perhaps we should start a light technical thread.

Peter,
So far here is all I have on the left-over Toyota Somali Technical. Not sure what weapon will be mounted on it yet. Maybe a recoilless rifle like in Blackhawk Down.

Ditto ! And I think the Toyota 4Runner is OK as well (the body at least ):

with some interior parts (and maybe the wheels) from a 1/36 Kinsmart 4Runner diecast :

..to build something like that :

I agree. I have used the body from the Tamiya 1/32 Toyota Land Cruiser Dakar and fit it on a 1/35 Land Rover Chasis and it fits perfectly. Some are 1/32, while others are made to fit the goofy chassis. It depends on which one you are using. I know the Tamiya Chevy Van and Semi bodies and a few others are way too small to actually be 1/32.

Hi guys
Thought i'd take some pics of the tamiya 1/32? pickups i have compared to a 1/35 landrover.
Then i read Frenchys post on the tamiya 4runner and kinsmart so mocked one up.
Before and after nissan kingcab

compared to landy

ford blackfoot

with 1/32 toyota running gear

Not tamiya but a shortened revell 1/32 datsun

datsun with 106mm

triple trouble

Now for Frenchy
The 4 runner before

now mocked as in Frenchys pic
its got a roof chopped off ,kinsmart 4runner interior, on a 1/32 cj7 chassis and running gear and a .50

Captin what trucks you got?

Those look great. I really like the Nissan truck. I have that one as well as 2 of the Revell Datsuns. I may have to do a few technicals now. Good job.

Hi
Thanks for your comments, now all i need to do is finish a few .
The tamiya nissan needed a scratch chassis, running gear, loadbed and interior which was based on the datsun pickup, the wheels are borrowed from a mig landcruiser technical.

Frenchy
Ive got all sorts of pickups, not sure about the original maker but some of the older ones are really to big to fit in as 1/35.
The datsun with the 106 is revell but i believe it is the same as the monogram but could be wrong.
As far as toyotas not sure not sure who made these but heres 3 of mine

I do have an older one that i think had a bike in the back which may have been monogram but it is very long.

Heres a pic of a 1/32 Britains maguris deutz/iveco tanker truck i bought off ebay cheap with the idea of using the cab and wheels, scratching a chassis and loadbed with the possibility of adding a zu23 ora scratch zpu4

what do you think, a worth while exercise or should i bin it.
I like the idea of getting a berliet from phebus or an m54 from real models or possibly another pegaso but funds are very tight at the moment and these resin kits are expensive but i could probably stretch to a fujimi/aoshama hino or fuso as a basis.

Funny you mention this truck Peter, as I I've got this one too in the stash (in a milk truck livery) along with another Britains model :

which will - maybe one day - be turned into this one :

According to the specs I've found, Britains RSPCA Iveco appears to be closer to 1/35th scale than 1/32...And the details are nicer than those on the other older tanker truck (but I would not bin it if I were you )

On a side note, HSV makes some nice resin 1/35 wheel sets like the one below. I think that they can improve the look of such diecast trucks :

The Toyota was an old Revell/Monogram kit as well. That's the one I used two of to make my crew cab SF Toyota, and what's left over for the Somali Technical. Its a great little kit.

Hi
I remember your thread on that Iraqi guntruck, i think thats the only pic i have of one of these that hasnt been knocked out and in a sorry state.
I bought a HSV truck when i saw this thread
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/86753&page=1

The trumpeter kit makes this redundant now i guess.

The truck body could be handy for mounting on the back of that tanker, will dig it out and see if it will work, or possible just mount the diecast cab on the vacuform chassis.

Thought id check out their site again
https://ssl3.world4you.com/scaleshop/
and came across hsv 117 a berliet d 5ton truck that looks to me like the berliet phebus make in resin but a lot cheaper
also a couple on Man 4x4 and 6x6 trucks ,unfortunately cant post individual links, the cab/chassis kits or the dump truck kits look very interesting.
Not sure if they are purely military but civilian Man trucks must have been used in Africa somewhere.

Here you go Peter :
HSV vac-form kits
I agree about their stuff. Looks like the only game in town when it comes to "civilian-ish" heavy trucks in 1/35th scale...

Hi Peter
Nice vidcaps

This one looks like a Fiat/Iveco CM80 or 90 (same body, different engines) to me :

Hi
Coupleof nice pics if iam not mistaken the plo unimog zpu4 is being carried on the back of a big IDF mercedes truck.
Ive got a few more pics to post, but had to get a new laptop as my other one is dying on me, hopefully the shop can save all my photos i had saved. Trouble is the new laptop doesnt have a driver for my old scanner/printer and i dont have the disk anymore, tried downloading a driver but lexmark site is having problems.
When i get it sorted will scan and post some more pics.
