Hello again guys,
I was just looking at the built model in another M88 thread & I think its really good. It got me to thinking:
The wheels & suspension on the M88 are the same as the M48 Patton, aren't they? If they are then I can use the MR Modellbau M48 final drives available from Accurate Armour, right?
Also, I guess the real thing was loaded up with tow cables so where can I get a good stash of relevant US tow cables from including the short version seen on many M48's?
All info appreciated.
Joe.

Hi fellas,
I just wanted to let you all know that the AFV Club M88 Vietnam version has just turned up on my doorstep.
Wow, it really is an awesome kit!
I'm gonna have fun making this! I'll post a few photos when I eventually get started. My 18 month old little girl is not allowing me much time at the moment! Keeping me up all night, she is!
Dont you just love 'em!
Joe.

I have the Mr Models interior set. Ive not built it yet but it doesnt look too bad. Based on looking at reference pics and the tech manual its clear some parts are missing, along with all of the plumbing and wiring. The instructions are real crap, they are half the reason ive not bothered building this yet. You will absolutely need a lot of reference material if bothering with the interior. Theres also the fact that the side hatch is incredibly small so very little will be seen once built (I plan on lighting the interior with small LED's)

Hi Rob,
How are you, mate?
Yeah, I'm looking to get the interior too, as I plan to model this kit with all doors & hatches open.
I've also heard its a "dog" too(a quote taken from this very thread)! I will need those reference photos!
That's a damn good idea with the LED's, Rob! I might try a bit of that myself. Lighting it up with red lighting inside will make it look pretty cool indeed!
Good luck, mate.

I might have to try closer to home as postagecan be a bit steep. However if I can find one down here I will try the ones you have mention. I look forward to the build.

Hiya Thomo,
I know what you mean about postage costs mate. Mind you, I couldn't believe how quickly the kit got here. I mean, I swear the guy jumped in his van & drove it to England all the way from Belgium! It was that quick - door to door!
Alternatively, mabye you could email the guy in Belgium explaining the situation; he might put it on the slow boat for you. This takes a lot longer to get to your place but is obviously a lot cheaper. Of course, it's up to you!
I wonder if its cheaper to get it sent to me in the UK & then me send it on to you; rather than pay the high postage costs on model kit websites these days. Again, its up to you. Depends on whether you trust me or not, I suppose.
Good luck anyway, mate.
Joe.

Did the marines have the M88 aswell?
If so, what colour were the markings? Yellow?

I'm not sure of when/if the USMC adopted the M88 in Vietnam. I am inclined to say they didn't. Instead, they were big users of the M51 HRV (Heavy Recovery Vehicle), which was based on the M103 Heavy Tank, which used many components from the M48 chassis.
On the USMC M51s, the markings were in yellow though, as well on their M48s, so it would be logical that M88s (if used) would also have yellow markings.

the only wreckers I ever saw Marines use were the 10 ton trucks, but I'm certain they did use them. One thing to remember about the M88 in Vietnam is that a whole lot of them (if not all of them) were gasoline fueled. So if your doing the engine you need to remember that. The transmission was the same as the later ones were, and didn't get beefed up till sometime in the 1980's

I was wondering if somebody was going to bring that up. The plain M88 had an AVSI-1790 gasoline engine. The M88A1 has an AVDS-1790 diesel engine. I can't remember if the rear decking was different or not since I never saw them side by side. And for those that are curious.....
A= Air cooled
V= V cylinder configuration
S= Supercharged
I= Injected
A= Air cooled
V= V cylinder configuration
D= Diesel
S= Supercharged
1790= Cubic inch displacement
Anyway, I thought I'd throw that out there for the fun of it.

Hi guys,
Only the gasoline version served in Vietnam as far as I know. The M88A1 didn't enter service until 1975.
Regarding USMC use of tracked recovery vehicles in Vietnam I'm of the same opinion as Gino. M51 instead of the M88. I might have missed something though...
Cheers,
/E

Brian,
Looking really good!
I like the stowage and added straps for the tool rack.
Just to point out the external differences between the plain M88 and the M88A1 I included a crude photo of my own WIP:
Did I miss any?
Cheers,

I love the weathering effects & all the little extras you've added.
When I start on mine I'll give you a shout for some advice if that's okay with you.
Good luck boys. Keep up the good work!
Joe.

Great work Brian!!! i 'm really interested in your M88 especially the accessories added on. Did you intend to put it on a dio ,I see the boom A loaded something, an M41 engine or an M113 engine from Academy??

The new Squadron M88 Walk Around book has a boat-load of interior pictures, allowing the resin AM interior conversion to better fit the actual view of the M88.

Hi Ha PHAM , thanks for the kind words , the engine is from the academy M113 kit , I added some lead sinkers to make it heavier .
I just thought that I wanted to have the boom up and slinging a load . I didnt spend any effort detailing the engine as I had no references . Maybe someone has reference photos of the engines from M48's and M113's ?
I didnt intend to put it in a diorama as I do not have space to display them .
I liked the Centurion and your M88 that you built , they are very good .
