Hello all,
I'd like to build an M88 during the Vietnam war. What would be the best kit to use?
I understand that AFV Club do an M88A1 & an M88A1G. Did they also do a Vietnam version? Or would either of the above kits be adequate?
Any kit numbers would be a help.
Also, any good aftermarket products available?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Joe.

Joe,

AFV Club no. 35011 is the plain M88 and that's the one you're looking for. I think it's OOP at the moment. Eduard have a PE set and MR Modellbau have an interior (said to be a real dog). The Vietnam version includes the AFV Club link-by-link tracks an PE head light guards.

Cheers,
/E

Hi Erik,
Thanks for the info. I am now in the process of locating AFV Club 35011. I think I've found one.
Is the Eduard phot-etch specifically for KIT #35011 or is it the M88A1/M88A1G?
Why is the MR Modellbau interior a real dog? Is it not very accurate or is it difficult to construct? I've sent an email to them to see if they have one for sale!
Anyway, thanks once again. I look forward to hearing from you.
Joe.

Ampersand Publishers (the folks who print Military Miniatures in Review) published a book several years back, titled "Movers, Shakers, etc etc", sorry for the incomplete title, I have it at home. One of the projects was an AFV M88 with the MR interior. It was a good build that addressed the highs and lows of the resin interior and I believe some PE as well. Again, sorry but it's been a bit since I last read the book. You should still be able to find it at any of the hobby stockists.

Hi Joe

I'll be interested to see how you get on with the build, I've got that model in my stash,
just have'nt got round to building it yet. I do have an idea though. I have an M109 that
got too near to the fireplace and melted on one side, long story, so I have had the idea of
having the 109 on it's side in a ditch, hides the melted bit, being recovered by the 88.
Have fun
Stuart

Now that's not a bad idea, Stuart. I always hate to build a model & then "wreck" it. Something wrong with my subconscious, I guess! But you've got the perfect excuse!
I know that we are on the subject of ARV's- perhaps I need to see my shrink!
Apparently, the AFV Club M88 Vietnam version (#35011) is now pretty difficult to get hold of. Its now OOP. I think I've found one, though. In Belgium, in fact.
I'll keep everybody posted on the progress of it.
Joe.

Is the Eduard phot-etch specifically for KIT #35011 or is it the M88A1/M88A1G?

It's labeled as M88 but as there isn't much differance between the M88 and the A1 it doesn't matter. I would like to point out that with the 35011 kit there isn't much need for the PE set unless one want to really super detail the kit. The AFV Club is a very good kit OOTB and with the included PE head light guards and L-B-L tracks you pretty much got everything you need. You can see content of the Eduard set on ther home page.

From the top of my head: some parts not included, very tight fit, very unclear instructions. Someone else might here might have first hand experience with it?

Joe,

Did you know there's a Military Engineering campaign starting 1 June? Your M88 build would fit right in...

Try this link for a review of :
Modeler's Guide to Engineering and Recovery Vehicles
Part one: Tracked

It is a pretty good book and has a couple of M88s in it if I recall correctly. I'm at work so can't verify that!

I hope this helps!!

I have the 88 interior, it's a mess. The only parts I used were the floor, back wall, air cleaners and some smaller parts. I used the kit parts as templates to scratch build the rest. Most of the casting's were blobs of resin and some parts, like the tool box racks, were not included. The interior is very visible if you leave the hatches open. Even with the interior kit there is still a lot to add, gun racks, law racks, radios, commo cables, knobs and switches etc... Used it on the 88 below.

Hi James,
That really is a beautiful model!
Thanks for the interior info. Any chance of some more pics of the inside 'cos I want to model the kit with all doors & hatches open & have you got any good interior reference material?
Hopefully, I'll hear from you soon.
Joe.

Hi Tom,
I'm flattered! You know, if I can actually get the kit & all other bits & pieces I need I may well take you up on your offer. I'm not that good at this newish hobby yet, though. But keep me posted. Anymore info on the campaign?

There are some interior pics of the A1 version on Primeportal. Sorry I can't help you with the interior differences between the 2 versions :

Pop over to the Forums tab, and in the Campaigns section under Military Engineering you'll find what's been posted so far. To sign up go over to the Campaigns tab...

I've got an M88A1G in my stash that'll want an interior so this discussion is very useful to me, but from what I see here it'd have to be scratch built. If you can't find an OOP M88 kit can you backdate the M88A1 that is currently available? Might need replacement tracks PE etc though...

I'm still not sure why AFV Club stopped production on their M88 'Nam kit... I'm hopin' they'll re-pop that sucker as I'd like to build it again (after I finish the first one, of course! ) It was a truly fun kit to build...and no doubt will be more fun to finish.

As to AFV Club, of course, I'm still waiting for their long-announced LVTH-6 (and hoping against hope for an LVTE-5 and the once-promised M42 Duster)...or any other Vietnam-era subjects, of course.

Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

Ah Havoc, I should have known you'd be in this thread!!

The full title of the Ampersand book is "Modeler's Guide to Engineering and Recovery Vehicles, Part One: Tracked". It's dated 2001. There are two M88 projects, plus (amongst the others) an M578 VTR, using the Italeri M110 kit and the Verlinden M578 resin/EB conversion kit that was re-released last year. Hope this helps.

Hi again, fellas,
Okay, I think I've hit a bit of a brick wall here. I seem to be drawing a blank trying to locate this kit.
Does anybody know where I can get one from? It's the AFV Club #35011 M88 Vietnam version kit. Does anybody have one in their stash that they might be persuaded to offload my way?
Any help would be appreciated, as always.
Joe.
