Life's is too darn short to penny-pinch on modeling. I don't live large and my humble existence is made better knowing that I'll get whatever model I want to get whenever I want. I mean, we work all of our lives and provide for our families so as long as the priorities are addressed I'd say buy to your heart's content! I had a stash of about 100 kits or so (all artillery) but sold/traded most of those off and now build a combination of modern aircraft and artillery. I have a measly stash of 20 or so now and I'm happy with that - not because I don't want to spend on more models but simply because I'm at a stage where I'm more interested in getting better tools, reference material, and hobby supplies that would ultimately allow me to build all of those models in the stash and the ones I'll be getting in the future.

Ge' - Good luck my friend! Lord knows I probably have more than I can build. Especially figures! However....I think I will put my money on the you won't make it past 6 months bet. The kits comming out now a days are really amazing and way too tempting!
Bill - I got to tell ya brother.....I had an amazing idea for every kit I ever bought and for the most part still do. The problem is, with the incredible amount of totally awesome kits comming out, my list of great ideas grow! And after 20 years of great ideas, the stash has grown faster than I can make them a reality.

Hi all,
does it really matter how many kits we have? I only have about 40 or so is that a problem? I have Items I bought 3+ years ago at Euromilitaire and I am just finding uses for them does it matter?
The point is as modellers we buy kits before we have a use for them, then we have that moment of epihany and we build a mini-masterpeice, its just another art form.
So I just stick two fingers up to all those naysayers ( my Partner included) and say to hell with it one more won't hurt...... Or will it!!

OK....For those who want to discuss the cost....let us remember, there is no ATM in hell
For those of us who are married....it makes the estrogen free zone very comfortable.
For the economy people, think of all the dollars on original and reselling that would be lost from the world economy
For the question of what is a stash...if you have more than 4 or 5 your stashing....welcome
This is no different than collecting coins or stamps or plates or little figures.

I have a stash of over 500 models, all of which I can sell and get money back for if I need to.
Maybe yes, maybe no. Unless you consistently bought low this might not be true. Put $40 in for a new kit, hold it five years, sell it for $25, rinse and repeat. Sure, you'll get money out ... just don't compare it what you spent in the first place.

Not penny pinching ... being smart financially. The kits and accessories aren't going anywhere, so why not let someone else store them for you until you're ready to use them?

Seriously, I'm just stirring the pot here. I don't maintain a stash because I don't think they make sense, but everyone makes their own decision. Twenty years from now, once my kids are through college and I own my house, I may be buying like a lunatic. So shop on you crazy horders!

Hah! It's a common delusion among the young married's and otherwise committed in relationships. Often brought on by the sirrepticious whispering of the significant other...
When you start to get close to retirement age, you will understand that those with no stash die younger...
I plan to live out my retirement to at least 100 by building my over 1000 stashed kits....

I know the feeling of standing in front of a pile of kits trying to find something to build. I think you'll do it whether you have 10 kits or 100 kits.
Back in the 90s I bought way too many kits. I took a break for a variety of reasons and even gave away a bunch of kits. I wish that I had some of those back. When I got back into the hobby one of my reasons was to knock down that stash. I'm down to about 12 unbuilt kits and 20 partially built kits. I still buy kits but nowhere nearly as many as I use to. I feel like I'm enjoying the hobby more now.

Buying kits that you like and having a stash of things you truly enjoy is an awesome thing. If you think that you've satiated yourself in this area then it's time to enjoy building. When things are balanced it works like a pendulum. It swings in the direction of buying/collecting and then to building. That's simplified of course, but it's part of the normal inner working of all stacks of life on any scale.
I hope you really enjoy your time building and that you will share your enjoyment with us through build logs until you make it to the point that you start buying again
@vonHengest-Jeremy,
They may be a simplified way of looking at this beast that we all have in common with this hobby, but for me this is exactly the way it is!
I still buy a few occasional kits throughout the year and my stash is (Well, let's not go there). Since discovering the fun of building and posting on this site, especially with the very addictive campaign forum, that one can easily get over enlisted in, its just a simple matter of selecting a kit from the stash and your building!
For me I've always enjoyed opening up a new kit box, a new dream and the possibilities, but if wouldn't get built, mostly because I didn't have a set process for painting my kits. So the stash just kept getting bigger. Now I'm building and finishing my kits. The campaigns have helped me to stay focused on starting and completing my kits. I've learned so much from so many modelers here that I'm really enjoying this hobby more than ever. Will I stop buying? NO!
My wife knows where I am and what I'm doing with my free time and she's totally supportive, she's gone and pulled a kit (32nd scale P-51 Mustang) out of my stash and she's going to start building it this week!
I do wish you the best with your intentions but I'm also hoping to see some of your builds posted here (helps with shrinking down the stash).

@ Eddy, my Wife is exactly the same, except she won't build a kit as she is worried she won't do it justice. But she doesn't mind me buying at all... but she is female so who knows what she is thinking....

i too have had to curb my spending on new kits, because of two factors the current cost of kits and the ever growing stash which we can all relate too i got back into the hobby 11 years ago and over that period i'd guestimate i've got well over 300 - 400 kits ranging from 1/35th figures/armor/PE, and Resin updates to 1/72 and 1/48 scale aircraft/figures PE and Resin updates so not buying new kits i can relate too, but if i spot a new kit at a bargain price then i might be tempted on sat i got an AZ Models 1/72 spitfire mk 1a for £12.99 which i thought was a bargain when for the past few months it was selling on Hannants for £18.99. but for me at the moment i'm trying to steadily go through the stash one kit at a time, God knows i've got enough to choose from and at 28 yrs old i've got a lot of time on my hands. but in the end it's all down to one's preferences.

I guess I should throw in if it hadn't been for my father's excess kits, I doubt I wouldn't have ever gotten into this again.
Since some were old 1/48 Bandai and collectors items, they did make a very nice profit on E-Bay, so I could replace them with the more modern tooled 1/48 Tamiya kits.
So, after you have enjoyed looking at your collection stash, why not give some away to somebody else to experience.

Jamal - Ironically, that's one of the three kits I DO have in my stash-ette. I saw it in a hobby shop a couple years back and couldn't resist. I didn't have any kits at the time, so it was easy to rationalize the $60-$70 price.

I'm holding it until I think I can do it justice (which will be a while). I haven't looked at it in a while, but I don't think it has many unique parts beyond the turret with the cut-out for the charging knight. If you decide to modify one of the pre-zimm'ed kits by scraping away the square on the turret, I'll be happy to share the markings with you.

Bill, you are so right! I have to admit that my wife pushed me first time to stop buying more kits, 2 years ago ( in fact, she said I can buy other kits when I finish the ones I have). But now I agree with the idea and I am very happy with this. And if I really need to throw money I buy modelling magazines and sometimes tools, glue, paints, etc. And I still hope I will finish the stash I have.

I go downstairs to my row of 8 shelving units, all neatly organized with my 400 model kits, and it's MINE. 40 dollars here and 40 dollars there, I actually spent a little on my self for once. I stand and gaze at those shelves and think proudly, "This is my kingdom, my reward for putting my family first. This is my domain".

While I was watching the football on TV tonight I went out to my garage and got two of my kits out, a Roden 1/32 Spad and Albatross D.III (OAW). I went through the instructions yet again and looked for places that needed to be drilled for the rigging etc and mulled over which colour schemes to use. That is the beauty of having a stash. You can go out and get kits just o look at while you are having a bit of a break from the bench. Once you have the kits it costs nothing to look and plan.

Might as well buy as many kits now as we can for the future. They'll either be priced way out of reason, or the hobby might become extict (because of the first reason).

Mine fluctuates around 20.your right it makes no sense to buy more then you will ever build.
