OOH MY God !!!!!!
What have I done !!!
I stirred up a hornest'' nest !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, without joking, there is a lot to say for all the reasons mentioned in this thread, but I must be realistic !!!!!!
Why spend THOUSAND of Euro's on models that will never be built by me and who are just gathering dust in the closet !!!!!!!!!!!.
I have no kids to give them to and when I'm gone the Mrs will probably give them to a LHS.
I rather keep the money in my pocket ans save it for a rainy day !!
The Dutch goverment has just made an agreement with the labor-unions about the retirement pensions for the future !!!
In the old days they would garantee you 70 % of your last payment, but now it is just what the revenue of your pensionsfunds will be worth at your age of 65 ( for some people 66 or 67 years )
Some bad years on the stockmarket has reduced my pensionfunds ALOT !!
As i said, I rather save the money for a rainy day or for some nive events ( extra holidays or a new car )
I DO NOT want to live on my creditcard as some people do, since this has brought ALOTTA trouble for some people in the past !!!
Repossession of cars, homes and so on !!!
To eachone his one !!!!!

Ehy boys...

If you have lots of kits in your stash which will never be built, why don't you give some of them to a kid who isn't into our hobby?

It would be a sort of future investment to keep alive kit modelling

cheers

Dear Mauro,

Since model kits have NO screen, NO escape-button. No joystick or what so ever !!
I once give some my nephews from 10 and 12 years old and they are lying around somewhere !!!
The kids I know spent more time behind a computer then exploring there creative skills !!

Well Gé. I know what do you mean. But in my opinion giving a kit to a kid is not enough. It would be better also teaching him how he can make the build...
If eventually kids are not interested at all, well never mind.
At least you 've tried

(...and if you go HERE you'll notice that is not so true that kids are not interested in kit modelling ..)

The trick is to see it the other way round. You don't want to limit the stash to what you think you can build in a normal lifetime - you want to force yourself to live long enough to empty the stash no matter how long it takes! Thus, if the stash keeps growing, you're set for immortality!

(Well, that's my plan, and I'm sticking to it...)

Tom

I have read through this thread and the above plan is the one I can go with. I have about 60 AFV kits and not sure on the figures. Thanks for this one Tom, it gives me hope

PS, two kits are on their way to me via mail as I type

that is like asking what way do you like sex

maybe That's why some of us never finish builds. .

Why stop buying kits? You'll start just end up starting the ones in your sash and have unfinished builds and back to square one..

What you say makes a lot of sense though I have never been known to demonstrate this trait when I get near a hobby shop or show, I have though recently pruned my stash to the point where I know I am god willing able to build them all and at the same time my stash is full of really want to builds.

R O F L M A O...!!! awesome thread guys!!

Lots of great thoughts out here (estrogen-free zone, no ATM in hell, costs nothing to dream and plan, good to have when times are tight...) but personally, I'm not in a situation to have 1000 kits worth of dollars tied up. I'm actually quite pleased with my 30 or so kits, single copies (no duplicates), that I've targeted and acquired with aforethought.

HEY now! this policy I have does keep me a bit focussed (not that that's a good thing!) on what I have on the plate right now, because there's always something sweet coming out, but it works for me.

Awesome thread! I love this stuff... !

my stash is around 35 kits and accessories. not big, but growing. a few years back i was checking out a new dml release. my wife asked me if i didn't think i had enough models yet. i gazed at my loving bride, smiled , and asked, how many pairs of shoes do you have? since then she hasn't asked me about my models. in fact she will see something she knows i like and e mail asking if i want it. what more can a man ask for? i will continue to increase my stash[ am looking at 4 models now ]and to build as i can. is it an addiction? as frank said in an earlier thread, we are researchers, builders, readers, and we support the economy. and i just plain damn well like buying for my future.

Recently my (moderate) stast of 20-30 kits has been growing mostly in the "figures" and "AM" department. This will likely change in October when I get more space including a 28m2 hobby room AND a dry 10m2 cellar.

After reading the thread I've come to the shameful realization that I am a hoarder more by circumstance than design. I have 100 + kits in my stash and with my career and home life ( that's the bit that demands attention or she gets moody) I have little time to build. I have also got a nasty habit of over complicating my builds making them take forever to complete. (Hence the 1/76 scale Matilda Hedgehog that started as an out of box build into a full scratch build interior and making the exterior more accurate.) I'm lucky to punch out one a year. I tried to stop buying kits (aftermarket, books etc doesn't count, does it?) I lasted about a month.

I do get a warm hoarder glow when I look at my stash though.

Hay we need to re-name this thread. It's should be called: "Hobby Hoarders"! An in the photo's I showed that's not all of them! So I'm truly a hoarder as well.

After reading this thread, I've painfully concluded that I, too, am a hobby-hoarder - but I'm lovin' it! "So there!" Unless the eggies find a real cure for aging (and it actually becomes available for plain old folks... ), I certes have no chance in H--L of building most, let alone all, of the ever-growing stash.

But here's a new IDEA! :

I'm soon to retire to my old home town. It's small, cute, and seems to be pretty chock-full of modeling guys (there are at least 2 separate plastic clubs with over 40 members active between them) ... but there's no LHS within 100+ miles... And I have this stash full of sealed kits, barely-opened kits, and dupes - even some "collector kits"...

Hmmm. Maybe I'll open a plastic shop in my garage and hawk them to the boys "while stock lasts"! Wow! A captive market full of buy-pressure itching for release! And, hey! A two-fer! I can "do" another "bird" with the same stone... SWMBO will see the overburden of styrene start to dwindle! What's not to like with this scenario?! Beats having my carcass fried in a neo-Viking styrene pyre scene and provoking the EPA!

Of course the stuff will sell, and money come in... and space will become available and overhead will be really low... so I suspect I'll not obey this thread "command" to STOP BUYING MODEL KITS! Shhhh! Don't let her hear this!

Cheers!

This topic got me thinking

I did an analysis of my stash and I have 30 kits/projects of which I have started already 25. You have to understand that this a nightmare for me because actually I HATE it when things I do don't get finished. I guess the forces of modelling are stronger than those of tidiness. Since I have little modelling budget at this moment because I bought a house I thought it would be a good time to start getting rid of the pile, halleluja . As an extra motivation I started joining campaigns. After the pile is gone I will purchase one kit at the time at my LHS, just plastic, no resin, no PE and especially no more diorama attempts, they always fail and cost too much time.

I hope I will succeed

They go back about 3 deep and stacked about 6 foot tall!

Hold on a minute now....

First we keep calling it an addiction....NO, the collection of unbuilt kits is a hobby all by itself. Like any other collection, we collect kits. Thus we have two hobbies and the stash is perfectly normal

Second, the wife. A simple understand works for me....I don't look at your closet, you don't look at my stash. Same goes for deliveries!

Lastly age, hummmm, you seem to be looking at it as an engineer, I could calculate x.xx builds/year.....stash/bpy = years needed....etc,etc. Now you should be looking at it as a banker...it is an retirement investment that keeps growing.

Rounds Complete!!

Exactly !! it's two entirely separate hobbies. a small, buildable stash makes sense, but to have your stash grow at an uncontrolled rate is certainly a 2nd, and very expensive hobby.

My personal stash is less then 12 models, most of the time it's less then 10 models. I try my darnest to buy everything I need to build the model when I buy it, for the purpose I'm building it for, PE and resin sets, paints, etc. That keeps me out of the LHS, and focused on what I really want to do, and that's build armor models. Kits aren't cheap, and neither is all the ad ons I've been buying.

As a side note I have one long time hobby friend who just couldn't' help himself when ever he went to one of the local hobby shops, and this goes back to the days of the Squadron Shops in Syosset New York. Needles to say he's bought more then a 1,000 models, and most are no where up todays standards. Moral of the story is that he's now going to every show and contest as a vendor trying to sell off everything and anything he can.

glad I am not the only one (looks like we're all the same) with a stockpile of models that would amke most model shops jealous!

My current policy is to make sure I finish at least two builds before I allow myself to buy something new. but with EBay (trademe in NZ) sites, there are always 'bargains' to be had that can't be missed...

All good fun, and I find it hard to go past a Sherman that is a good deal without stopping to at least kick the tracks and ask for a test drive...!!

One day the wife will nudnerstand!
