Speaking of Toyotas a BJ44 (kitted by Mig productions in 1/35 resin and Esci in 1/24 but not as a pick-up) would be nice although I'd prefer a regular (non pick-up version) but hey they could release both versions!

Yes, this BJ44 would be great (or an older model of it??) These were used a lot by PLO forces in Lebanon back during the civil war... and they can make different variants of it.

I wonder if we'll ever actually see something like this in plastic!! I guess it doesn't hurt to pray... and dream

Thanks Robert, I thought I'd heard that about Tacoma's. Thanks for the history lesson, the devil is in the details.

yes, yup, sure and oh yeah, that one too!

and as already described and listed above plus new Silverado pick ups. I'd like to make a few versions of the MILCOTs. I've seen Canadian line trucks to ambulances and US Navy utility pick ups that look very cool

I'll also mention again, the CUCV in plastic would be nice because there are a lot of variants to build.

Chevy pick ups
Chevy Blazer
Chevy Silverado

This is an odd question...odd in that it uncovers how huge a hole a section of the modeling market is. FAVs still remain a relatively untapped area of the military model market....and the few offerings show a very expensive avenue to make a FAV also. (Take a look at all the resin accessories for the HobbyBoss WMIK for instance).

Do you all know that many of these pickup kits exist in 1/24-1/25 plastic and diecast? Just not in 1/35 scale, that is all.

So why can't we make the pickup "technicals" in plastic that MIG has done so in resin? Modelers who started down this road know the answers already: the answers popped up in the first "What If?" and "Twilight 2000" campaign.

The obvious answers are that no one has made 1/24-1/32 plastic or resin machine guns, ammo cans, or accessories for those plastic pickup kits so we can't "Mad Max" them. And the other answer is that no one makes 1/24-1/25 plastic or resin (modern) soldiers either. There are even very few 1/24-1/25 civilian figures for these plastic pickups. Sure, there's the Hasewaga 1/24 M2 machine gun off the WW2 Willy's Jeep, if anyone cares to buy that kit to swipe the MG. And there's a resin M60 out there somewhere if you search the web hard enough for it. But no other modern MG besides those Vietnam-era machine guns.

I've read over the years of some casters saying that they will start making M2HBs, M240s, M249s, and other 1/24 modern machine guns and then the idea just....faded away....

So take your pick...nowadays buying an expensive 1/35 "technical" in resin, or hoping for 1/24 guns and buying a cheap plastic 1/24 pickup kit and trying to "technical" it from scratch. Those first "TW2K" campaign modelers asked the same questions way back then and came up empty. If you look in the Gallery, there are very few (to zero) plastic pickup technicals because of the lack of accessories to add to the donor kits out there.

I would like to see some 1/35 SUVs...Chevy Suburbans and Tahoes for PMC, FBI, Secret Service, etc. And the F-250-550 series, which the front grille is much different from the F-150 series. And of course 1/24 and 1/32 modern machine guns.

Most of these have been mentioned but:

Ford F series incl. dually and crew cab
Chevy or GMC pickups, reg and crew cab
Suburbans, Yukons, Explorers, Jeeps, Land Cruisers, Range Rovers
Toyota, Nissan trucks and vans.
A Ford or GM van, they are all over the place as Police and Ambulance vehicles.
Mercedes Sprinter......and hey throw a '71 Falcon Ute in there while we're dreaming!

I really don't understand these wish lists at ALL.

I asked whatt I thought was a straight enough question - what Pick-Ups are needed in styrene - for Technicals or SpecFor vehicles. Nothing more than that...

The majority have ansered in a useful manner which has helped me get my thoughts together on the subject. Fot that I am genuinely grateful.

Please keep on topic as i'm ONLY putting forward the ideas on Light Commercials/Pick-Ups, anything else is WAY

I don't know what model Toyota this is.. but it would make a very nice kit.. and it might lend itself to many other variants??

Also, the Ford F-150 would be nice.

Hisham

Thats a 70/75 series Lancruiser.

Sorry, I should have added that I'd love to see a 70 series landcruiser (this could be a ute or troopcarrier with very little modification) and pre 2005 Hiluxes in single and dual cab.( I havent seen post 05 hiluxes in any reference, but I'm more than willing to be corrected)

So thats

70/75 Series Landcruiser Troopcarrier and Pick up
pre 2005 Hilux single and dual cab

It would be great if left AND right hand drive versions could be built.

Here's the Great Wall Deer pickup Robert mentions in his post :

More candidates from Iraq :

On a side note, and even though they're no pickups, a few Japanese and Korean mini vans would be cool as well. Some are even used by the bad guys

Nice thread.
I think some styrene Bj44 could be really great, as well as some civilian Land rover serie II.
The most usefull and versatile would be a kind of vintage pick up, that could be used from early 70's to present.
As frenchy said, some japanese light trucks could be great also, for heavy technicals/guntrucks.

That mini-van in the last pic Frenchy posted is becoming a very popular means of transportation in many Arab countries.. and we call them (Micro-Buses).. A couple of those in 1/35 plastic would be great and very useful in many dioramas in my part of the world.

In Egypt people pronounce it - Meecrobus.

And another thing don't single me out bud, I'm not the only one who asked for something different than you.

Personally, i'm not even vaguely interested in Pick-Ups. However, I do see there's a HUGE gap in the market for them.

No, you weren't get singled-out, the only information I wanted in this thread were suggestions for the most-used and versatile light pick-ups vehicles,

Jim, thank you for this post, I guess the rumble in the distance from modellers was loud enough

I don't have a specific model, the once proposed would do just fine!

hope your (and us fellow modelers her on armorama) pleas with the "bossman" have effect, I don't think they'll be stuck with overstock for the first couple of years

greetings, and thanks for the effort!

I must say that I do agree that Pick-Ups would be a welcome addition to us all. The Micro-Buses are in interesting suggestion as the base vehicles are seen in all sorts of options, vans, mini bus, pick-ups, tippers and cargo trucks.

I am intrigued by the Chinese built Great Wall Deer pick-up, is this company any relation to Great Wall Hobby? I know that a few of the Korean engineering companies have a huge range. But a Chinese Pick-Up would be less of a copyright issue than Toyota or Nissan.

When Hobby Boss release the Land Rover Defender I am sure that the aftermarket boys will provide a few conversion options.

Bongo trucks!

Ditto !

Fujimi has released several Japanese light truck kits but they are 1/32nd scale (and not really cheap if you ask me...)

This Bongo truck comes with barrels and plastic bottle crates, which I needed for another diorama anyway. They are indeed a little pricey, but well worth it.

Who could forget he Bongo trucks. They are everywhere in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. There is also a diecast crew-cab Bongo on eBay.

I too had one of the Cantor trucks. I sold it before I got to building it though. It was very nice though. Fujimi makes a few different versions of it.

Just felt like posting a few images of some common pick ups and suv's you can find in Nicaragua and pretty much the rest of Central America, I'm pretty sure these will be found in the hands of rebels all across the world, and maybe even some PMC's.

First up is the nice and new Land Cruiser

Followed by an older on from the early 90's

and an even older one from the early 80's

This is a Prado, a cheaper option for the Land Cruiser, this one is pretty recent

and this one is from the early 2000's

Here's a Land Cruiser Pick up(as it's known here) from the mid 90's

As a much newer model this one doesn't look that different

Here's a recent Hilux

and one from the late 90's

Couldn't find a single cabin one, used to be plenty of those..

here's a picture of some rebels during the Somoza coup, check the weapons, no k's on these rebels

Tundras are trying to creep into the market

The Hiace is used for corparate transfer and and a means of paid private transportation between the departments(states).

Here's a Mitsubishi L200

and a version from the 90's

Montero or Pajero's as they're known elsewhere, used to be pretty popular, especially when the sport version kicked in, but demand for them has died down.

Here's the big rear end of a Nissan Patrol,, the demand for the newer one's have died down as well

Here's a Patrol from the early 90's

Pathfinder, kind of dull isn't it?

Same can kind of be said for the Navara which is can be seen around plenty, and I must say it seem's they only come here in green.

Mahindra from India has been brought into the market, this double cabin is based on their Scorpio Suv

It was pretty much ignored at first, but after some publicity stunts, like this country wide Mahindra convoy, it's kind of catching on

Great Wall with it's FAW Admiral is having mixed results, people do buy them, but they're mostly quickly re-sold.

JMC's... They've even tried giving them away....

This is what our president and some of his croonies ride in...

The Red Cross has some cool Landies from the 90's and 80's, will try to get pics of them. Really really rich people have way cooler newer one's, though I kind of take that back, I find the older one's closer to my taste.
Here's an article about rebels and their love for Toyota's, it's in spanish though, I think it comes with a link to an english version. If not, you can always try googles translation.

Hi all!

Jim, thanks for bringing the subject up.
There's definately a gap to be filled.

My choices would be:
1) Toyota Hi-lux (darn, I even bought the MIG kit, so I'm shooting myself in the foot!)
2) Toyota Landcruiser or other SUV type

But, heck, anything on the line of what others have already mentioned would already be a great start.

IMPORTANT things ANY kit of this type would have to have IMHO:

1) MOVABLE doors (i.e. a separate piece) - heck, even the $$$ MIG and Vajira pick-ups need surgery...and after all that much money put in them, it takes quite some courage (see Roy's wonderful work on his Irish F-350).
Also, as a side note, most "civvies" available as kits in 1/32 (e.g. Tamiya's and Aoshima) also do not have this option.
2) DECENT interior (dashboard and seats in particular, but also the interior of the doors). It does not have to be 100% accurate, as long as it is there.
3) CREDIBLE suspensions/underside. Especially for the pick-ups, this is not a part that can be overlooked without it being noticed once the assembly is finished.

Just my two cents.

Fingers crossed!
