Well here goes nothing; my second ever attempt at a larger figure, in this case the Tamiya 1:16 scale German with MP-40. Sooner or later I have several figures to paint, so I might as well start learning now. This will be more or less OOB, following the kit provided instructions and box art. Most smaller parts are in various stages of clean up for base coating, probably with acrylics.

OK, grenade given base coat of Tamiya buff, ammo pouches painted Tamiya deck yellow. These should look lots better after detailing and given a wash;... we'll see I guess.

MP 40 base coated; looks kind of boring, but drybrushing with a blue steel color should help.
If I can't get this right, I'm lost for sure, as I have great reference.

Mister Surfacer 1200 used to fill minor seams; once dry I'll wipe down with alcohol.

I selected Tamiya IJN gray for metal object base coat, and really like it.

Head has a flat spot on top, so it made a perfect attachment point for base coating with Tamiya Buff.

I propose to base coat this guy tomorrow, uniform wise. I'll probably use a tan/brown yellow for the primary color. It seems that this base color will go a long way towards a realistic uniform depiction. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Kevin- I'm liking this build so far, very clean and clear. At this point the one comment I will make is about the MP-40. In this scale a very metallic color will look quite strange. You could get away with gun-metal in 1/35 but at 1/16 it will look odd. My advice is to use a mix of black (or black grey) and gun metal- this tones things down nicely. Then you can add washes and drybrushing to really bring it out. Thats just my two cents by the way, if you want to try something else then I say crack-on and see what happens. Good luck with the rest of the project.

I agree 100% The beauty, if you want to call it that, of modeling is that it can always be stripped and redone if I'm not satisfied.

MP 40 dry brushed with a black/gray/blue mix. It's not really as bad as it looks.
Helmet dinged up a bit.

Grenade now has a wooden look to handle.
Ammo pouches, etc received a wash. I probably should have painted straps first, but I think it's still doable.

Here's the display concept; (certainly nothing new here). Building remnants are from 1/2" balsa foam and will be trimmed back so as to not dominate figure. Assorted debris will be painted and scattered about.

Very nice and subtle work so far on the MP40 and ammo pouches, keep it up.

Sure, it's a dense, lightweight phenolic resin foam that's great for this type of thing. Most craft stores sell it. Easy to cut, carve, sand, paint, etc. I'm building a 1:72 U-Boat bunker out of it right now.

As expected, first color coat revealed several prep flaws; once those are corrected I can resume painting. A great thing about these photos is their use when painting shadows.

No problem,... and thanks. My Dremel made short work of the balsa foam wall. Primered with Floquil concrete, I'll further refine it as the project continues; back to the dungeon we go.

Painting these straps earlier would have been better I think, but drybrushing might help. Does anyone know if the small loops at the bottom of the straps were also leather?

After staring at the photo above, I've decided to strip them and start over. I'll go with more of a Khaki color and lighter brown leather straps. These are mounted on the front of the figure so I really want them to look right. I've already sprayed them with oven cleaner for stripping.

Kevin: might be too late but Tamiya and other acrylics strip really well with a windex bath. Less toxic than oven cleaner. HTH in the future.

Thanks Zon, but I already stripped them last night; I'll keep it in mind for the future though. I'll probably repaint today, though I'll need to run out to Michaels for a new spotter, as the bristles are all bent up on mine.
