Thanks for your kind words Soeren and Karl. Yes,it's a hard scene. If you read a lot of history, like myself, you frequently read about stuff like"they suffered around 600 killed and 3000 wounded during the withdrawel". I keep trying to bring that to life in my mind. Every one of those guys had buddies or wives or brothers, sisters and of course mom and dad, etc, etc and every death or maiming was a personal tragidy. I love military modeling but after serving most of my adult life in the Army, this helps keep it all in focus for me.
Thanks for taking the time to look in a comment guys, means a lot.

Verrrry nice Jerry! I've been working on something very similar myself. Unfortunately, this puts my effort to shame, so I'll have to redo it just to keep up! Seriously though, I can't wait to see this finished.

This is a great job! I am extremely impressed. I did notice the title was, "Ich hatt ein Kamerad"? If this is supposed to say, "I had a Comrade (or friend, acquaintance etc. etc.)" then it should read, "Ich hatt 'einen Kameraden" Also, in German all nouns are capitalized so "Kameraden" should be capitalized. And I am just an American living in Germany. I am not fluent yet so don't trust me on that 100%. Just wanted to make those small things known just in case you wanted to put a label or a name on the stand of this. Once again, these look absolutely amazing! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks bro,
Spelling was never my strong point, even in English! LOL I was also stationed in Germany for 6 years and got to speak a little of the lingo. The phrase was from a German song in the 40's that was popular,I think.

Small update. Toned down the blood but it still is too bright I think.

Nice work so far, very touching scene. i agree, blood is a little to bright, but i think you may be able to get away with it!!
Posted: Sunday, March 11, 2012 - 03:28 AM UTC
I think you are right about the blood Jerry, but it would only need a very slight tone down in my opinion. The scene itself is just excellent and its nice to see it coming together so well.

James and Karl, thanks for looking in and for the constructive comments. Now if I can just get it together for that final push that always seems to evade me when completing something!

I would leave the blood as it is now, Jerry. It draws in the eye and gives a focus to the whole scene. I always find that it is better if the painting is very slightly exaggerated in this scale. Otherwise, if we were to paint 'in scale', so to speak, our miniatures would be very dull indeed! (Try looking at someone from 50 yards away - You'll see what I mean).
This is quite probably the best rendition of this type of scenario I have ever seen. It has certainly been an inspiration to my work. I only wish I had thought of it
Now, lets see it finished!
Gary

Thanks as usual buddy for the kind words of encouragement.I am still on this project but have to juggle my time between this and the horse dio and a set of masters for a halftrack conversion set and a 1/32 P-38 conversion set.
So things are kind of slowed down. It does help keep my feeble old brain sharper though, bouncing between all of the subjects.

You really did some awesome work here Jerry, the look in their faces really adds to the overral drama of the scene- as does the red wound against the drab camouflage. I can't wait to see what you get up to next.
