If you don't win something for this dio the competition has to be just incredible or very poor judges.
Best of luck and let us know.

Someone answered this already before I popped off. The Dio looks great. When you do chip, the chart house is fibreglass, gunwales are aluminum. I wish my PBR looked as good, though ..

thanks, thanks
considering i started this 10 years ago, finishing it is already a win! but getting some prizes would be great too

Hey Dave,
I tried putting in one of the helmets into that rack and it wouldn't fit, but after putting on the roof tarp, it's hard to see.

I was wondering about the material used in the superstructure. I saw some photos with a bit of metal chipping on the plates behind the captain and assume that those were metal armored plates, is this correct? and then the front bit is fiberglass?

I've got a couple of vietnam war ideas in mind but none started:
1.) (in braille) the 4 M113's trying to pull out an M48 stuck in the mud
or
2.) something to do with the 21st century 1/18 M48A3

and
3.) I also want to make a vietnamese with a bike along the Ho Chi Minh trail.

This time, i'll have something to say. The armor plates seemed to be ceramic tile on steel. I had a slew of photos I took 21 years ago but cannot find them.

Chart house is indeed fibreglass, I think there is a kevlar curtain inside the chart house, but that's from fading memory.Interestingly, the weatherdeck had a gap between it and the hull about the width of a quarter's thickness ( think a 1 Euro coin ) The boats I photographed has non skid, looked like it had been spread sand, then painted. The non skid was on all the horizontal surfaces. Will it make a difference on your boat? No.

You're right about the helmet rack, no one sees it with the Kevlar tarp above it. I do recall that the instrument cluster was in a natural metal finish. I do not know if that is standard

Your boat is great, the action very real and love the water. You may even put some mud on it here and there , but if that makes you crazy, don't . The crews took good care of their boats .

Again, maybe you will inspire me to finish mine .

Hello and thanks for all the kind words. This won silver in the diorama category and also the Best Tamiya model in the diorama category (I guess the gold medal dioramas didn't use Tamiya models, hehe)

Thanks for the info Dave and hope you finish your PBR, it's really quite satisfying to finish this model, it's really a very interesting craft.

Excellent job, Vietnam is my thing and that is one of the best dioramas I have seen. So much detail, you did not let anything slip by you.

Very cool.

One of the best I have seen, excellent. It has everything you would want in a diorama. Attention to detail, realism and an artistic vision. You took a piece of space in a different time period from your vision and recreated it.

I served on the rivers and canals of Vietnam with the NavalSpecialWarfareGroup that supported the SEAL Teams with MSSCs and LSSCs (as DML has a model of the LSSC) and I saw many PBRs with many variations of crew additions. One such base was North of Seafloat/Solid Anchor (website) that was hit by NVA supported Viet Cong one night and we could see the flames. The next day we went up there and all the PBR crews had escaped in their boats which was a blessing! Your model is a perfect rendition of these boats and an honor the courage of all Brown Water Sailors! Keep up the great work!

I really love the PBR and it makes for a great model.

Every time I read about them they keep mentioning the armaments and we all know they used 50 cals and M60s. Some had various AGLs of the hand cranked and full auto versions of 40MMs.

But everywhere it says they also had some with 20MM cannons on them. I have never seen a picture and I think the boat was too light to shoot a weapon like that.

Has anybody seen a picture or in real life a version of a PBR MKII in the Vietnam War with a 20MM mounted?

A weapon like that needed a solid place to mount it. I think someone just made a mistake and added it to the list. Since people are lazy everybody who wrote about them just took it for granted that was accurate and included it. Most times it seems like the information was taken word for word from an original source that was inaccurate.

So if anybody has a picture of one with a 20MM please show it so I can build it or try to. I cannot find one picture of any PBR with a 20MM.

Thanks again guys! I really enjoyed researching photos for the PBR, and it was very satisfying to finish this piece.
Sharing it and having people enjoy it as well is a real bonus.

Bigdaddy: I haven't seen a photo of a PBR with a 20mm gun.
