Tamiya Tusk

Got my two in on Friday and I have to say I am very happy with them. Used the TUSK parts from one to fix and finish my Legends M1A2 TUSK II update, already used the hull and other parts to bash with a M1A1 to start a TUSK I and the other kit will be used as a load for my M-1070. Thinking about making that one a M1A2 TUSK II but without any of the reactive armor blocks, just the frames

FYI: The upper and lower hulls from each kit will fit but the new drivers hatch from the M1A2 TUSK will not fit the older M1A1 hull

Speaking of M1’s. Google map the Lima Ohio area and look for the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, almost due south of the city. I believe this is the Lima Army tank Plant. There are rows of nice new looking tanks as well as rows of stripped down rusted out hulls and turrets. Pretty neat looking stuff.

Started mine this week. Found a great way to put on the anti-skid on the tank.
I brush on some future and then I dust on some embossing powder. It works really great.
Cheers,
Mike

Mine is built and ready for paint. I used the textured rustolium method for the anti-slip.
I checked out the Plant at Lima. Hard to tell for sure, but it looks like most of them have a CROWS II installed. Or, maybe I'm just seeing things.

Someone needs to get us an aftermarket Crows II with mounting system for the SEP. I'd jump on them in a heartbeat.

That sounds right. The latest version is the M1A2 SEP v.2 which has the TC's .50 cal removed and a CROWS II mount installed above the Gunner's Primary Sight (GPS) box.
Here is a walk-around I posted of one.

Check out the Sierra Army Depot, countless M113’s and 577’s, at least a few thousand M1’s, rows of AVLB’s, Bradley’s, and lots of stuff I can’t ID. Man, I would love to take a stroll around some of these places. I'll bet some of my old tracks are sitting out there.
Gino, are all the A2's going to get the CROWS?

Thanks for the confirmation Gino!
One of my next projects will be a Dragon M1A2 SEP with the CROWS on the GPS, so I've been studing your pictures for a bit to figure out the mount. We'll see how it goes through, my scratch building skills are currently limited to scratching at plastic with my hobby knife.

Would the "Crows" for the M1114 be appropriate for the M1?

Yes, the Bronco M1114 Crows II is the same system. The mount is different though. Take a look at my pics to see it. Eventually, all M1A2 SEPS will become v.2s.

Well I learned a valuable lesson this weekend. Needed a Tamiya mine plow for my TUSK 1 upgrade. Couldn’t find one on the web or to trade. Sooooo after driving to Anchorage to hit the hobby shop, they had the Tamiya M1A1 with mine plow, about 60 bucks with some paint. A 300 mile round trip with the wife, lodging, meals and gas, several hundred bucks. Had a nice day Monday building the plow and working on a few other M1’s. Go to fit the plow to my TUSK 1, guess what, it won’t fit because of the freaking belly armor! The wife will never be told of this……

I have really enjoyed my build of the Tamiya Tusk. No complicated steps, good directions and it sure looks good. I do wish that the price would be lower.

I will be getting mine next week, I just have to wait and see what I have in the stash. It sounds like it's up to the time frame you want to build the Abrams from. I'm thinking of building a OOB Tamiya Tusk II an the second one kit bash with a Dragon Abrams.

back dating the sep hull to a M1A1 HA is a simple conversion all you have to so is sand off the detail that is the compartment for the battery pack and add a fuel cap

The real question is why???
The Dragon M1A1 AIM is much better detailed and cheaper than the new Tamiya kit.
Call me crazy, but I just don't see the logic in getting a lesser kit, having to convert/backdate it, bringing it up to standard, and paying a lot more for it.

To each their own. I'll stick with Dragon's superior product any day.
