Looking superb now Dan. Are you going to weather the tracks to blend the vehicle into the base?

In all honesty even being in a Sherman against a Panther or Tiger would be a nightmare.

Thank you all for the great feedback on the build so far,
I've been working on the radio operator the last few days and I should be in a position to post up some pictures later this week. Being an early ish Dragon figure it's got a fair amount of cleaning up to do with seams and some soft details.

Rich, once I've got all the other bits done then I'll tie in the running gear with the dio base, I've a bit more work to do on the tracks yet.

Thanks all

Right chaps, been away on holiday for a while, so here is where I'm at.

New boots

Borrowed from another old soldier, they still need more work to fettle them in a little but we are now correct on the boots from the era.

More hopefully later.

Hornet head MKII... I dropped the first one down the sink, Please don't ask, it was a face palm moment and a comedy basic mistake. Anyway I think this one has turned up better than MKI

Please feel free to comment and pass on any tips.

Tip #1 Put the plug in the sink next time

Joking aside, this chaps face is a definite improvement on the last one mate.

Thanks for the tip Rich

Anyway moving on, I've stripped the paint form the head again, wasn't happy with the eyes TBH. So it's been repainted again but not quite finished yet, still have the eyes to do.

Main colours have been blocked in on the jacket and pants although I'm not convinced I've got the colours right? The pants look too yellowish to me. I 've placed another order for more Vallejo paints to correct this. I've added some subtle highlights to the jacket and his web kit just to get the feel on how I'm going to do this chap, some detail is very soft and other detail is hard to get a brush into.

Still please don't treat this as the finished figure, I've got a long way to go yet before I'm happy with him.

Changed the colour of his trousers, looks a bit closer to photo's I've seen.
Had to use Tamiya paints but thinned them with Tamiya's own brand of paint retarder, it worked well and I manged to get some shadows in and some subtle high lights.

Thanks for looking

Next up is a matt varnish to tone down the uniform and add the radio.

Love it Dan. The pose is very good, and he actually looks like he's on the radio.

I know nothing about the real deal so If you see something that's not quite right then let me know.

I'm not sure how to break this to you, but the Tamiya kit is more than a bit of a horror show from an accuracy point of view.

There are several big issues and a lot of smaller ones. Big issues:

- The turret and turret ring are about 1/8" too small in diameter which doesn't sound like much, but it looks massively too small.

- The vehicle in the kit depicts a diesel engined variant and there were very few made in this configuration, on the order of 200-300 vehicles total with the horseshoe turret. The differens is in where the air pipes from the cleaners enter the hull.

- The kit road wheels are too narrow and the track is rubbish, but you are fixing both of those.

- The AFV Club suspension isn't quite a drop in to the Tamiya hull and one thing to watch is that the return roller mounts on the Tamiya kit are incorrect. They need to be more of a "U" shape so that the track end connectors clear the roller mounts. They don't on the Tamiya kit.

The good news is that the AFV accessory comes with some new parts that are better than the old Tamiya parts. This includes the differential cover and the rear engine doors. If you were building a Brit version, you swould also have great smoke mortars and antenna mounts plus the hard bits of a great grouser rack.

Use all the AFV parts you possibly can.

HTH

Paul

I think Verlinden makes a kit to convert the Tamiya kit into one of the turretless recon tracks the Brits used in Europe. Comes with a lot of interior pieces. The next issue is the gasoline conversion. It can be done. Think most of the diesel powered tanks went to the PTO, but could also be dead wrong as well. I do know the diesel powered tank predates Russian involvement in WWII.

Dan,

Just found this thread and I think you did a wonderful job! The old girl never looked better - coming from one who built this model when it was first released!

I may have missed if someone else mentioned this but some U.S. Horseshoe M3 were used in North Africa after all.

This is excellent work all around, and I particularly like your detailing of the cupola.

Thank you guys for the kind comments,

Well the figure is now finished, just his carbine that needs more work doing to it.

I'll get him placed and pinned on the base next.

Cheers

Almost ready to call this one done,
Only the pigments for the running gear left now to do and it goes in the display case.

Not too shabby for an old kit, enjoyed the build and detailing.

Next up will be a Chieftain Stillbrew

Regards

Dan
