I think that their T-90 & T-72 series are great products, when they can be bought for 40 to 45 USD with included shipping.
Postman delivered to me today T-90 cast turret and the box is jammed with sprues and parts look great

I don't understand all this furor over the kit being mild upgrade of T-72B but not K-5 equipped T-72B itself. You want to build 1989 T-72B out of this kit when it comes out? Then all you need is OMSH pattern T-72 tracks, get rid of kit's wind sensor mast and T-90 style exhaust, that's all there is to it. Taking things off and filling the gaps is a lot easier than scratch building missing stuff.

What about the drive sprockets? I presume Trumpeters T-72 tracks (both workable and non-workable) don't include them and that they won't fit the kit ones?

I got the Trumpy T-72B Mod 1990 kit (representing the T-72BA from what I've read) and would like to backdate it to either the non-early T-72B or T-72B Mod 1989 (i.e. some Cold War Soviet model).

Are any of the first two camo schemes useful for that? I wish the Trumpeter's painting schemes would have some description (like e.g. unit and year or something like that).

I think all you have to do to back date the Trumpeter kit to an T-72B 1989 (also referred to as the T-72BM) is remove the wind sensor mast on the turret, replace the kits radiator exhaust flaps with rounded corners with ones having squared corners and maybe replace the road wheels. Trumpeter's kit is a T-72BA which is the designation given to remanufactured T-72s that were modernized using T-90 components.

IIRC, the wheels are the same. What I'm aiming at are the tracks because T-72B and T-72B Mod 1989 have RmSH tracks while the kit has newer UmSH tracks which replaced the older ones in the 90s. Now, Trumpeter offers sets of RmSH tracks (workable and non-workable), but I don't see any mention of drive sprockets being included and I suppose these tracks won't fir on sprockets which came with the kit?

I wonder why did Trumpeter release these sets before having any kits which use them..

Yeah I wasn't sure, that's why I said "Maybe" replace the road wheels. I have heard that the later T-90 road wheels are slightly different but don't know for sure. You are right about the tracks. If you want to do an obr. 1989 then you need RMSh tracks. Sprockets are available from Friul, SP Designs, Miniarm and a couple of others.

I can see that Miniarm have announced a workable T-72 set with sprockets intended for the Trumpeter kit (along with some other sets) so that might be an option..

Great kit, I've just bought it. You have to love Trumpeter, they are number 1 in russian stuff. The last kits they produce are very well researched.

However, this is not a 1990 model as the boxart says. It's a T-72BA 1999-2002 version and it's widely in service
