Good morning gentlemen,
I am planning a dio that includes dragons Sd.Kf2.184 Elefant (kit #6311), and would like to depict the eastern front, (Poland 44-45). This kit is not the kit with zimmerit. So, would it be accurate to have this tank without zimm so late in the war? I would like to add cavalier zimm but cannot find it or its out of stock everywhere. Any help would be great.
Cheers all,
-Zigg

Hi Chris,
you need to add Zimmerit. All surviving "Ferdinands" received the coating when they were overhauled in the Nibelungenwerk. There's no alternative.
There is an alternative, however, for the Cavalier product you were looking for: ATAK Zimmerit. In my humble opinion, it looks even better than Cavalier's attempt to recreate the pattern. (Cavalier is no longer trading, as far as I know)
http://www.jadarhobby.pl/atak-35004-zimmerit-for-sdkfz184-elefant-135-p-3500.html
If there is anything else you want to ask, please let me know, for the Ferdinand/Elefant is one of my favorite subjects.
Cheers,
Johannes

Hi Chris,
I couldn't think of a reason why they wouldn't, and I believe some of your fellow country men have ordered from Jadar already.
But I'm also pretty sure there's an US-based dealer you can order the ATAK products from. Sadly, I'm not familiar with which ranges of items are carried by American modeling shops, for obvious reasons
Maybe someone with better knowledge of the availability of ATAK products within the United States can chime in?
Happy to help,
Johannes

Chris, it's readily available on Ebay. If you don't like dealing on there, do a search for Atak distributors in the US, I'm sure you'll find someone to send it to you.

Chris;
As others have noted, this one does need the zimm.
My personal preference for zim remains DIY using wall spackle or dry-wall compound, but the Atak resin stuff looks pretty good, to me.
Remember that, whatever route you go to get your zimm, you are really seeking to depict an "old and chipped" coat of zimm - the vehicles were rebuilt in NOV 1943 ad zimm'd during that refurbishment. By late in the war, one might expect that the zimm was pretty banged-up???

http://www.thebarrelstore.com in Toronto,Can. carries Atak. The Elephant zimmerit is # ATK35004, for Dragon kit 6126, for 32.62 $Can. They will mail internationally. If your Dragon Elephant is a different no. no worries - if Dragon is consistent in their measurements it should still fit.

Not trying to hurt thebarrelstore but if the ATAK gets too costly, you may try for a more-recently released Elefant with zimmerit pre-molded

Dragon makes very good zimmerit on their newer Elephant, but buying a new one is more expensive than buying just the Atak zimmerit. And he still has an Elephant that needs zimmerit!

Zim is a must, and Atak is the one you want. The Cavalier is cheaper, but usually leaves out things like the sponsons and hatches. They expect you to do that yourself. Atak usually includes resin pieces for hatches, mantlets, etc.

I'm with Chumpo! Get some epoxy putty and make your own because if you want to chip it its easier than the premade stuff. Just my nickle's worth

Doing your own Zim is not impossible, but it also is a lot of work, and can go wrong easily: you have to have the right thickness, and need the correct Zim tool for the desired effect. I suggest Milliput if you're going to go the Do-It-Yourself route, as it's water-soluble and therefore can be reworked by simply wetting the surface of the Zim.
Secondly, I would disagree about the chipping: you can break off resin Zim pieces, shave them with a hobby knife, and do most everything you can do with DIY Zimmerit.
