I wonder if the German troops shivered in their boots with the thought of Herr Leutnant and a compass?

"Ja, Herr Leutnant, I know the Marsch Richtung is directly across the draw, aber... Perhaps if we head just a little up hill, we can cross at the head of the draw rather than across the deepest and steepest part of it... don't you think?"

I'm looking forward to getting reacquainted with Der Spiess and the rest of the Jungern...

I like the pose of that guy- exactly as you describe it Jerry- you've captured how he would look perfectly. I must also say the skin tones are fantastic- got that real weathered 'been out in the sun a while' look.

I had the same thoughts about the officer and the compass LOL
I am thinking about working with this and the horse thing at the same time so let's see how that works out.

I thought I could use more practice painting so I went back to this one because the figs were so far along. Looking at what was done so far. I am very glad I bought an optivisor,THAT is for sure.

I completely re painted the number 2 machine gunner. The officer is under way for touch-ups.

Thanks Maarten nd Dan,for reintroducing yourselves to the old thread.

I made some more progress over the last 2 days. Added a new fig I began yesterday. He is "sleepwalking". Something every grunt may know something about.
He has Dragon legs and arms and Miniart torso,Hornet head and Alpine hands. A real FrankenKorp dude. PE is from Alliance.

To fit his hand under the leaders' y strap I had to shave off the molded on strap and replace it with yes...Alliance PE.

Small details need fixing, like blending in strap connection points and the rifle stock bottom, etc. but you get the idea. I read about this happening all the time on the Eastern front and on this occasion, during the long escape made by Ramckes' Iron Men across the Western Desert.

I also added missing detail from the gas mask carrier,ie the zipper pull strap and the belt attachment strap, hanging loose. Sometimes I just drink toooo much caffeine.

Slightly - but only just - off topic:

Bernhard Ramcke; what a man. I recall as a schoolboy ploughing through a copy of the Sunday Times supplement magazine in the mid 60s (I was a paper delivery boy then and received free copies if any were left over) whereby they were running an article on Montgomery's desert campaign; they sought out the good General and asked him to contribute. The reply: "I do not wish for my experiences to be quoted in a British newspaper".

Hard as nails - even then.

I know,it was a lot of activity from me. I tend to do this when not much is happening here so as to try and get things moving a bit. Sorry.

Have you read about his exploits in Crete ? Wow. As far as the newspapers were concerned he may just have been leery about how he would be portrayed. There was still(understandable) a lot of animosity back then for the Wehrmacht in general. Not much objectivity,I think, until the 1990's

Jerry,

I haven't read that about him; what does come across is that he was always concerned about his men - and sadly, in my experience - that is not always the case with the officer corps (!)

I am more than aware of the general feeling regarding the German armed forces of the Second World War - but then - I had an uncle who had served in 9th SS Hohenstaufen!

'Nice to see yet another of your projects - albeit a resurrected one; probably about time I tackled all those half-started/half-finished ones in the attic.

Regards,

Brian

Things are now looked at with a lot more objectivity and much less propaganda induced hysteria methinks. Not every German was a Nazi,in fact not many at all, percentage wise. Not excusing the regime in any way.
I always look at the whole thing as "soldiers are soldiers",no matter what Army. Some are good, some are bad.

Took this snap of the squad leader to spot any problems. I see a few but he's pretty close.

Just joined another incredible Jerry-fest! The biggest problem I see with this squad leader is he has somebody's severed hand hanging form the back of his suspenders! gives new meaning to "lend me a hand will 'ya Joe"...or maybe to his Platoon leader he's just a really "handy" guy to have around! Hands down though, great work as usual Jerry (Sorry I couldn't resist!).

The latest guy. Tired number 3 machine gunner and kid just in for replacement with a still unbleached hat.

He is using the carrying strap issued to Infantry units to help with the heavy load. He needs to take some more methamphetamine's or maybe they have run out. German units were issued these to use during times of extended combat.

Thanks for looking,
J

Can't be fun hicking through the desert with all that ammo and stuff. We had such ammo boxes in the tank, and believe me, they will be very unpleassant to Carey.
Keep up the good work
