Is there a reason why the two view ports are at different heights?

Easier to post this way: Austratt Fort Turret

I've based my build on this specific turret which has the ports offset (the "why" of it I don't know).

Sealed up the guns.

Awaiting some 3/32nd rod from an online store for the rails and ladders; should have it next week.

Did a hard-edged camo to the rangefinder.

Some detail work on the back:

The boxes are .005 brass and the "hook" mounts are styrene, Tichy rivets, and solder.

I've drawn where the door goes using a thin styrene sheet template and I think I'll glue that template there. The pictures I have do not show a very pronounced raise in the door so I think that'll be fine. I'll build a handle and hinges like I did for the rear deck.

Kind of a poor picture, but you get the idea:

You can't really see it, but I've made the initial template for the other two rounded vent-type boxes. I'll make those out of 1/4-in oak scrap and use the disk sander to round the edges..along with styrene to to enhance it.

Feels good to be working on this with some regularity.

What a fantastic build this is turning into! Are you going to have to throw out the coffee table in the living room to make space for it when it's done?

Not real clear in the photo, but if you haven't thought of it already you'll want some sort of channel or coaming over the door; with the slope of the roof, during a rain anyone coming through that door would get soaked instantly otherwise.

LOL Namabiiru! I've suggested to my wife that I put this in a display case that seconds as our coffee table. She's not interested in that.

The other pictures I have do show a channel above the door. I just need to see what I have that'll bend easily enough to follow the door's shape. I'm thinking some of my small angle styrene heated while against the "shapes template" I use. That may do it.

Mike,

Do you plan on doing the covers for the main gun ports?

I've considered it, but I'm not sure yet if I want to go that route.

The start of the railing.

The left side of the rail ends where the opening from the ladder up the side will be. The opening will be about 2.5 scale feet. I've used .030 styrene rod...which give the rail about 1 inch in scale diameter. The height is just above the figure's crotch...all this was just a "guess" as to how things could be set up. Keeping the rail level and the uprights vertical is going to be a pain...

Thoughts? Need more done for you to really see what's going on here.

I like it as is, but in a perfect world I would recommend another set (or even two) of horizontal rails about mid-way up. That seems to me consistent with standard practice, but I may be thinking more of what would be seen on a ship rather than a super-massive land vehicle. And yes, that would be another level of complexity...

Agreed. Might be easier to lay out too. I drilled the turret, the stuck the uprights in...then added the top rail... Hmmmm, I have some brass rod too...may try my soldering skills and see if that would be better. We'll see this weekend.

Mike,

Brass might be a little more work but I think it would be more durable.

Also, what are you planning for you commo?

I have a variety of Aber/RB/etc antennas and mounts. 1.4 and 2.0 meter along with a "command" (star?) antenna. I haven't totally figured where they'll go other than the range finder has two and each MAUS turret will have one.

Any ideas about placement?

In no way am I an expert with antenna/ radio stuff, but aren't those antennas you mentioned kind of small? I mean, given

a) the importance of such a beast with - probably - strategic purpose (making it a high value target)
b) the range of the main armament

I would expect radio equipment that allows to communicate with:
- higher echelons (up to army level?)
- the front line troops calling in long range artillery strikes
- the protection force around the Ratte (think "carrier group")
- airforce.

I believe this would result in something like a little antenna (factor in redundencies, this thing is ging to be hit hard...). Apart from the central antennas, I could also picture individual antennas for the rear turrets to interact directly with the protection force.

As to placement, that's a tough one. The rear is out of the question because of the helipad. This pretty much leaves only the turret top/rear or the rear of the turret platform. If it's on the hull, the antennas would have to be on a flexible mount so they don't get damaged by the rotating main guns... In the the end, turret top/ rear probably is the most "natural" spot.
Just my 2 cents

Found this, just pick your poison.

Might want to look at a frame antenna.

My attempt at soldering the brass rod with a soldering iron. The two end pieces went like a breeze...then the center pieces did NOT. So, pulled out the butane torch and "cooked" the buggers. Worked better.

No clean up has been done yet:

Brass rail is on. I'll make a quick jig to set the second row of horizontal rails in. The styrene rail will come out.

Couple of shots with the turret on the body (not attached):

More rail work.

And, I'm done for the night. (I think)
