Insane!! I can't believe you're actually building this thing.

I have to say, when you first said that you were going to build this I thought "Yeah right, talk about overambitious. Never gonna finish it." I've had that thought a couple of times here on Armorama, one was from some guy who said he was going to build a castle and the whole village surrounding it. We all know how that turned out.

Sorry for lack of posting...couple things on the bench to clear and then it's back to the Ratte.



Wife's getting a partial knee replacement, so I don't plan on going anywhere but work...so hopefully that'll see me in the shop more.

You always have an interesting workbench! An insanely large-scale tiny AT gun, next to a microscopic Atomic Annie... We'll wait, as long as you keep posting goodies to distract us.

Tiger Models Ki-84, Dragon 1/6 M3 37mm ATG, and Dragon 1/72 Atomic Annie. Bit of a mix of kits, eh?

Decals for the Annie and detail paint for the ATG - Ki-84 is finished now.

Folks, I just don't know what to do with this blog now that Photobucket's greed has destroyed the sequential work of so many. I see that KM has given us the ability to edit old posts, but there are just too many photos for me to try to upload to Imgur and try to figure out where they go here.

Perhaps a post or two with "key" pictures of the build from the beginning and bringing this blog back up to date? Build photos, not concept photos. Or, just post the most recent photo or two and carry on from there?

Very frustrating.

Yep - PhotoFUBAR has really screwed over every blog on the internet! Still, all we can do is pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and carry on. You could do a "re-cap" post with a few highlight/milestone photos uploaded to a new host, but mainly we'd all be happy just seeing new pics as you go on.

I've left my useless PB account, on the off-chance the excrement-storm forces them to backtrack, in which case my old pics might magically re-appear in old threads. And if they don't? Oh well - nothing major has been lost. Meanwhile, PB is still hosting my images free, so every day they are on the PB website without the 3rd-party links is a day that PB effectively gives away the server space! Worst they can do is delete 'em completely, but I still have the originals here on my computer, so at best I "break even", and if they don't delete them I win. I'd love to be at the next PB shareholders' meeting...

Thanks for the input Tom....I've pulled selected photos from my files and loaded them to Imgur (seems to work well and easy so far). I think a highlight post is best. I'll see about putting that together in the very near future. (I may have to look into KM's 500MB acct - the Ratte alone is 86MB - as a "Subscriber" tho the upload/posting process is not very user friendly in the beginning)

Like to see PB go the way of GeoCities.

This'll be kind of interesting to try and put together a "highlight" of the build, but we'll give it a shot.

One of the first things I really started working on was running gear...how would I do it, what would I use? Ultimately I chose to use 1/16th RC King Tiger road wheels and 1/25th Jagd/Panther tracks from Academy with copper tubing to tie the road wheels together and threaded rod (All-Thread) as an axle and to attach to the hull.



Next up was assembling the first portion of the hull to handle all the axles/running gear and give a home to the MAUS turrets and AA guns.













Along comes the first positioning of the MAUS and AA turrets.



A workshop was built to slide into the second hull to house the Flak Walker.



The opening.



Setting the running gear hulls up for adding the center portions of the hull (and the beginnings of the turret).



It's beginning to look like a big #$&'d tank.





Work on the underside.





"Framing" for the turret base (and the workshop is installed).

Exhaust.



Starting to get Teeth.

Mike,
I became a subscriber because of the very thing alot are experiencing now. When I first found kitmaker I had been out of the hobby for some time and started looking through old threads to get caught up only to find a lot of them the pics were gone making the threads almost useless. I joined to get the extra space for pics and to help keep the site around. It is a learning curve for sure to post pics but once you know how it's easy.

Mike, I'd forgotten how far you came with this beast! The retrospective was a great trip down memory lane. (I can't shake the image of a grand dining room somewhere in the bowels of the beast, with generals sitting round an antique table, candelabras burning, as waiters bring them schnapps from the mantelpiece over the marble fireplace with which to toast the Fuhrer...)

By the way, have you put it on the scales lately? Be interesting to know how much raw plastic the Third Reich is consuming on its latest wonder-weapon.

Can't wait to see how it develops!

There is a dining area for Senior Officers in there. Unfortunately it got sealed up when I closed up the left side where the tracks go...

Turret. Other than the size of the Ratte itself, the main turret is what draws the eye.

Photocopy of a kit's instructions with 1:1 measurements ultimately converted to 1:35 scale.

Took a little bit to figure out how I'd mount the barrels so they could be raised and lowered.



Paper Panzer Productions "came to the rescue" and didn't even know it with their range finder.



It now has real teeth!



Back details - scratch, metal, resin (Shapeways), plastic...one of the hardest areas to figure out "how" I was going to replicate.

Wow! Looking impressive Mike! Really huge. Can't wait for the next update.

I decided it's time to get the turret (mostly) done, so I'll be focusing on it (along with a couple smaller [LOL!!] builds).

I'm finishing up with the second ladder set and doing some seam clean-up. I gave the base of the barrels a fresh coat of satin black in prep for taping and a potential "Haze Gray" initial/first(?) coat.



One of the detail items that came with the PPP Radar und KDO40 Turm Heimdall were two "control" boxes. I've been playing around with trying to determine where to put them. I'm liking this location.



They would be out of the way but easy enough to work on due to the low slope of the turret in that location. I'm looking for some thin'ish solder so I can run cables from the boxes to the base of the KDO40's platform. If I do this, I have some scale tread plate that I'd put over the cables where they cross the roof's walkway.

I know the boxes would add visual interest to the turret but if they are something important, there should be plenty of room in the turret.

I've really can't wait to see the tracks go on.

If those boxes get any servicing, they need a metal-mesh walkway for the maintenance crew, with a gap in the railing. Should add a little more visual interest!
