Congrats Sven! this is a very interesting version and beautifully done. Normally the M113, as iconic as it is, doesn't catch my atention but your work is one of those that easily inspire anyone to do their own M113...And when I was scrolling down and saw the interior lights that was a killer for me. Impresive

Rene, thank you very much for your kind comments!
I agree that the M113 is not a particularly spectacular vehicle, just a box on tracks. I am glad you like mine :-)
Interior lighting is something I will be adding in future projects, I really enjoyed working with the LED's and trying to capture the ambience as closely as possible to the real thing.
Thanks again!
Sven

Hi Mike,
Thanks for those very kind words, I appreciate it and am glad that you like the model.
The blue light is much more white in real life, strangely it comes up blue in pics.
Next up is a proper base for it, I've been meaning to get on with that for a long time now, so hopefully this summer that will get done :-)
Other than that, I have a few projects I would love to tackle (and a lot of half finished ones should get finalised), but have not really had the time to get around to them.
Something with an interior most likely :-)
Thanks again!
Sven, I hope you will document your progress with base as well. I can tell it will be a master piece as well. As for your next build with interior, may I suggest a Stryker with interior? You see a lot of Strykers but hardly any with interior. Yes, the kit doesn't come with one, thus the main reason for no interior. However, with your skills that will not be hard to reproduce with some plastic and spit.
Btw, may I ask how did you created the antenna? It looks perfect in scale. In the past I have used guitar wires and other fine wires but for some reason they never looked right. Your...every bit is a top notch. So, help a brother out and share the secret.

Hello Mike,
Thanks for your message, I really appreciate your comments, you are too kind.
A Stryker with interior is definitely in the planning (some time in the distant future). I have a resin interior set and an AFV Club Stryker, and also a Legend engine compartment so that till be quite a task once I'm up for it :-)
I am happy to share the antenna "secret". I use acupuncture needles for my antennas. Very fine, and very, very strong. The hard part is finding them to purchase (I have bought them through a friend in the past, but not likely I will be able to do that again since he does not have that contact anymore).
The antenna base is a Voyage (or is it ET-Model?) item made with a real spring.
Cheers,
Sven

Sven,
Ah, I see why they are so thin and straight. I have seen these needles before and you are right they are of fine grade and will be a perfect candidate for such job. Heck, if Jackie Chan or Jet Li can use them to take bad guys down we can sure use them to take bad antennas down Thank you so much for sharing this information. I will start to hunt for them at Chinese shops.
Also, I'll look forward to following your next build. Hope the Stryker will follow soon.

Awesome Ken. Now, all we need is Sven to let us know the appropriate size he used and we are set

Always happy to help, Mike.
I have a selection of 0.2mm and 0.3mm needles I use. They usually fit the bill for a number of antenna types (I just use the size which I think gives the right "look" - no measuring of real antennas involved :-) ). I don't fully recall, but I think I used the 0.3mm on the M113, but don't take that as an absolute truth since my memory fails me. 0.2mm works well for handheld/carried radios (in my opinion).
Make sure you put a sign by your model at shows warning people about these needles/antennas. They are not always easy to see, and they will poke your eye out since they are so stiff.
Cheers,
Sven

Sven, thank you again for your kind help with information.
My father served with the peacekeepers as radio operator for over a year in Cambodia and Laos. He served with Indian Army and was transferred to UN as was the best radio man in his unit. I need to get busy and build a model of his vehicle.
Well, good luck with your next project and I'll be there to follow along

Hi Mike!
No problem at all, always a pleasure to be of help :-)
Very interesting to read about your father, I think you would serve his memory well by building his vehicle. I look forward to seeing you get that build started.
Cheers,
Sven

Vignette Base
Well, its been a a few years since I took this model out of the glass cabinet, I have been waiting for the right moment of inspiration to make a vignette base for it.
With C4-Open in Malmö at the end of October quickly approaching, I thought I would make an effort to the get the base done so I could bring the model to the show (last time I had it at a show was 08-Open in Stockholm - on a simple wooden base - that was five years ago, my how time flies!!).
I have been thinking about how to do this for years, since I wanted to get the battery and switch for the interior lighting incorporated into the base in a good way.
In the end, I decided to reuse an old scrapped base that I made many years ago for a Matilda vignette. It is the lovely "sunken road" base from Monroe Purdue, but since it needed more depth (for the battery compartment), and extra width and length to fit the M113, some major rework was done to it.
I also redid more or less all of the groundwork and greenery at all layers.
I used Tamiya's dark earth sructure paint followed by Tamiya's "grass paint" to form the first layers.
The plants are mostly from J's Work (paper, pre-painted plants), Scalerama (elephant grass, which is a very prominent feature of the Congo landscape) and Green Line. The ground scatter is "Forest in a Pot" from Reality in Scale.
I spent a lot of time trying to get the plants right, so I hope this will be ok. I will most likely work a little more on them before I am finished, and also add more contrasts to the road. Other than that, I think I can call this one 90% done.
As you can see, I put a lot of green in the middle of the road, and then consequently removed it again. It was a bit much. Most of it will be covered by te vehicle anyway.
Anyway, time for some step by step pics! (without the vehicle in place for now, those pics will come later).
Thanks for looking!

M113 Congo Vignette - quick preview
Ok, some friends have been asking for this, so here are a couple of quick pics as a sneak preview of the vignette with the vehicle in place. Just a quick, temporary set up.
Figures you ask? Yes, I plan to have figures as well, just struggling to find suitable ones for what I have in mind. Swedish ONU troops are not that easy to find either, so I'll have to convert some.
The battery compartment lid in the base needs to be fixed since it is too flimsy and does not sit flat (and of course the hole for the switch needs to be added :-) ).

Great and inspirational work!
If you are struggling to find relevant figures, try converting some from Masterbox, as they have adequate or just about adequate trousers. You'll have to combine legs and torsos...Check this two boxes - apropriate UK uniforms, and useable DAK uniforms

Thank you Marko, I really appreciate your kind words and the tips on figures that could fit what I need.
I'll have to check those MB figures out. I would need to add long trousers to the British crew, but perhaps not completely impossible. :-)

Thank you very much Cam, I am really glad you like both the model and the base.
I have a fondness for "jungle-like" environments, so this base was great fun to make.
