This thread is for only for questions regarding the M1 series of tanks. It is meant to be used in conjunction with the Abrams group build but all Abrams questions are welcome. Any questions regarding the group build should be posted in the thread in the CCC forum.
If you have an Abrams question, read through the posts here before asking, as it might already have been asked.
This topic will remain a sticky topic until the end of the build.

I am going to go ahead and re-post this so that it is easier to get to.

Because it has been asked of me, I will try to explain how I staightened the brass wire I used for my Abrams turret basket. I got it off a spool, so it wasn't very straight, which neccessitated the creation of this process.
First, you will have to have a candle, a tack or brad, the spool of wire and a small weight of some sort. Shove the tack into your desk and wrap the end of the wire around it a couple times while it is still attached to the spool. Light the candle so it will be ready when you are. Stretch out as much wire as you need and draw the spool tight in your hand. Sometimes I find hooking the wire in the notch in the end of the spool helps so the wire doesn't move. While holding the wire taught, run the flame of the candle along the length of wire. Don't pause for long on any one spot, as this will tend to burn through the wire (brass has a low melting point). After a few passes, tape the weight to the spool, then let it hang down off the edge of the desk overnight. This will straighten it enough for the next step.
The second part requires a glass cutting board, a small metal ruler and some practice. I cut a length of the now straighter wire from the spool. It will still be pretty wavy, but make it as straight as you can with your fingers. Next, hold one end of the wire and place the other end over edge of the glass and start pressing the wire down onto the glass with the metal ruler. Turn the wire slightly and do it again. Keep doing this and then move down the length of wire until the whole thing is as straight as you can get it. It will still be slightly wavy at this point.
Now comes the fun part. Holding the wire in your right hand (left if you are a southpaw), place an inch of the wire onto the glass and hold the rest off the edge. With the other hand, hold the ruler perpendicular to the wire and start rolling it over the wire and pressing it into the glass. IThe wire needs to roll, so hold it loosely. You might need to twist the wire in your fingers the first couple of passes to make it roll, but once the end starts rolling, everything else will fall into place. Continue rolling down the length of wire, while moving it further onto the glass. Do it slowly and the wire should start straightening out quite nicely. When you reach the end, move the wire into the center of the glass, and continue rolling more briskly, now. After a thirty seconds or so, you should come out with a really nice piece of brass rod.
I hope I have explained it well, enough. If you have any questions, please ask and I will try to explain better.

Okay, first question;
Does anyone have dimensions on the outside bustle rack? (the extra rack (left or right, not at the back) that carries the spare fuel cans)
Thanks,
Jurgen

It may also be helpfull to just post (maybe at the top of page 1) the usual info for the usual questions. How to get to the M1 Tweaks link, the dimensions of the CIF panels and the extra bustle and side racks for OIF. Just a thought...

Does anyone know if the steps in the tweak list for the Dragon M1A1 will work for the Dragon M1A2?

The tweaks list will work for all Abrams variants as long as the mods don't apply to the specific component that is diffeent between variants. I am trying to think of one at the moment, but don't seem to recall any.

Cardinal, those pics are for the power pack, the enigne and transmission. I believe he is asking about the small generator the replaced the LR fuel cell in the M1A2 SEP.

Anyone have the actual dimensions for the flat square IFF panels that are attached to the front of the turret? Thanks in advance.

It's allright. :-) Those are some important pictures and now the link is here for everyone to see. I will put a couple more in since I thought of it.
The most important one, my M1A1 pics:

The M1A2 from AFV interiors
http://afvinteriors.hobbyvista.com/m1a2/abrams2.html

The Track Width Mine Plow (TWMP) manual (big .pdf file)

Jan Wilem de Boers M1A1 aIM pics

Keenan, the dimensions the government listed were 30" wide X 24" tall. This would scale out to 7/8" X 11/16" (21.8mm X 17.4mm).

Queries:
1) What is the exact composition of the Chobham armor used on the Abrams?
2) Exactly how thick is the armor?
3) What is the exact RHA value of armor?
4) What is the exact maximum strength of the armor?
5) Is there a microwave oven to heat the MREs and popcorn?
Just kidding guys. ;-) I know nos. 1 to 4 are classified hehehe
Seriously now...
For LOTS of Abrams pix (as well as other armor), Scott Cunningham's site www.armorinaction.com is a good reference.

Okay, I just recieved two CDs in the mail today. One was from your friendly neighborhood TankRider (John Charvat) with a couple hundred M1 series pics ranging from the M1 to the M1A2 SEP. The other was from my good friend Case (Kees van der Pols) in The Netherlands. It had Jan Willem do Boehrs M1A1 AIM pics in all their glory. This puts the all the M1 reference pictures, technical drawings, and .pdf files that I have up to a grand total of 2247 files with all but about 20 being pictures or drawings.
I am more than happy to share them. If there is a particular picture you need let me know. I am on dial up internet so I can't do very many at a time. Please keep this in mind.

The tweak list is a list of corrections needed to make a kit accurate. In the case of Matt Malagorski's Abrams tweak list it covers most of the Abrams kits out there. you can find it here:

Doug,
I have a few good pics I got from Andreas Elesky the other day. I can email those. Just a quick reminder to you guys: The EAPU by DML is crap, you have to either use a resin replacement or build a new one. Also there's two type, the early one did not have the NATO PLUG next to the exhaust....

My thoughts on the EAPU of available 1/35 M1A1/A2 kits today:
- Trumpeter's EAPU is slightly under scale. No details on the top and rear - needs scribing to replicate flush access doors; plastic strips for the raised door, and scratchbuilding the handles. The housing (?) that connects the EAPU to the tank's turret is too slender and almost devoid of detail.
- DML fares better in size, but may have incorrect panel details (according to images I found in the web). The housing thingy is diappointingly absent, even in their latest 1st BTN OIF version.
- Tamiya's M1A2 OIF seems to have the most accurately molded EAPU - seriously thinking about making resin copies of it. Housing looks okay, seemingly similar to Italeri's version, though I don't have Italeri's M1A2 but I'm hoping it's better than Trumpeter's.
Note that all models lack the conduit that connects the whole device (the narrow strip travelling parallel to the blast panels) to the smoke grenade launchers' electrical system.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys.
I do have another question. I have seen that people have used some sort of color changing film or mylar to get the color shifting effect of the lenses on the commanders CITV and the gunners sights? What can be used to get this effect?
