Bit of an update, I have drilled out the exhausts to make more of an opening and to thin down the thickness of the sidewalks. I then added PE horizontally to the two main pipes. I just need to fix the very end of the barrel where the bag is covering the muzzle. The reinforcing wire is poking out, I may need to grind it as a file doesn't quite work. Then I can touch up with putty if I need. I've primed the tank ready to go for its base coat.

G'day Nick

No, you have the convoy light on the correct (left) side. However, don't forget the wire, which comes out of the inside end of the light and then ducks back under the stowage box.

Yeah Rob I was referring to the Aber fenders had the slot on the wrong side and I had to fill the gap. Yeah the light wire is part of the light, nicely done by Dragon. I will bend the fenders more once I have added the drive sprocket.

What are the best colours to use for the base colour and camo colours from tamiya or gunze ??(only asking cos I don't really do German armour)

Cheers

If you are going with the common 3-color then use the following Tamiya:
Dark Yellow base
Dark Green
Red Brown

You can lighten/darken the last two for variety if you end up making more German armor.

G'day Nick

That question would have to be one of the most frequently asked questions regarding German armour, and everybody has their favourite methodology.

I agree that the Tamiya colours are the best base, but used straight they are too strong for 1/35, and need to be diluted or toned down. At one time I used Tamiya Buff for this, but have since seen the suggestion (Panzer Art 4) that Tamiya Wooden Deck Tan does a better diluting/toning down job as Buff is a bit too yellow.

In terms of thinning the paints, I suggest using Tamiya Lacquer Thinner - the finish is much better than using Tamiya Acrylic Thinner.

Rob

Shell: cheers for the information, a trip to the hobby shop will happen this week 😀

Rob W: cheers for the advice, I have sometimes just used white to dull down sandy shades, but maybe in this case it won't be subtle enough. I have Tamiya lacquer thinner but can't say I've tried it yet as I've had great success with Tamiya acrylic thinner. I will have to remember that it is raining in the main reference pic.

Robert S: thanks, i usually choose to build a model from a reference pic that takes my fancy, this pic is very interesting been that it's raining and the JP is my fav German tank

G'day again Nick

By the way, I think you will find that two figures, complete with umbrellas, are available from Royal Model if my memory serves me correctly - I used them on mine.

I must try and find an image to post.

Thanks for the link, as I have already got he "standing" figure of the two Royal model figures, I did not particularly like the pose of the sitting figure and will opt to make the second figure "custom" from a few kits.

Cheers for the link though. I also forgot to mention I still need to make all the road wheels and prime them. These I will paint separately to the main hull construction

Bit of an update, I have primed the JP and added two thin base coat layers, next will be some slight colour fading on the larger surfaces.

To the axis armour modellers out there, am i correct in guessing that the rubber on the road wheeld would have been prone to chipping and losing rubber from wear and tear?

Unlikely that the rubber tyres would have been painted Dunkelgelb during manufacture but if they had been, the flexing would tend to make it wear off quickly anyway.

Regarding damage to the rubber, 654 was not in action for long in Normandie (most of its Jagdpanther arrived fairly late - I think I posted delivery details on ML recently) so not much opportunity for heavy tyre wear in that campaign.

G'day Nick

I agree with Robert about the tyre damage. You might like to know that German rubber wasn't actually rubber as they couldn't get supplies - it was ersatz (artificial) rubber, and consequently wasn't a true black in colour. Suggest using Vallejo "Dark Rubber" to paint the tyres.

Quite interesting, the things you learn when you start building a new model you have never built. Thankful for technology and websites such as Armorama!!

So off topic sort of, why was the m-10 look alike Panther the Germans used called ersatz?

I have just airbrushed a slightly "faded" mix over the larger flat surfaces where panels would be most prone to fading. I have left the edges and around raised features the original colour. Will try to post a photo tomorrow when there is some natural light

Here's the photo as promised, next will be the brown or green camo. I'm
Unsure which one to do first. Any suggestions?

I don't think it matters, for some unknown reason,I spray the brown and then the green,it has worked for all of my tri color camo.

Thanks for the feedback Dustin, it's greatly appreciated 😀

Yeah I didn't think it would matter as the camo patterns don't underly one or the other, was just seeing what other people do. But I had the same thought doing the brown first and then the green
