Started my track assembly today but when removing track from jig pins fell out.Must not be doing it right!

Hi Bob,
See Pic. # 98 above. You should trim off the pin sprue attachment while on the jig. You have to snip while pushing in on the track pin. It's all a friction fit. Removing the section from the jig before trimming tends to loosen the pins , and they can come out.
Hope this helps.

The worst track assembly and jig I have ever seen.I tried the way you suggested and nothing works. The pins will not line up and go where they should. Then when you think you have you take top of jig off and find all pins bent at angles. I am giving up on Meng tack and hope to obtain some of trumpeters T-10 track.Life is to short at 67 for this nonsense.Enough to make me want to give up the hobby of building my kits.

I quite agree , maby I didn't explain it quite clearly enough.
The Jig is DIRECTIONAL and can only be used one way.
Here is a Pic,

Note the position of both of the shoes on the Jig.
You have to start at the end with the large pads and work your way up.
If you have the Track Shoes on backwards the pins will not line up with the holes in the shoes and will get bent.
Of course you could always drill out the holes in the track and assemble them like a set of Fruils track (probably mispelled)

I have it finished , I'll have some Pics. this weekend if my internet service holds together.
We had a Huge lightning storm last night and the lightning hit a tree outside my house. I'm lucky it didn't hit the chimney , I was on the way to the toilet when it hit.
If it would have hit the chimney I would be in the great model shop in the sky.

Wow, Donald, I'm really glad to hear nothing happend to you (or your house) in that storm. Thanks again for the build log and the invaluable information about the tracks - workable tracks with pins (as opposed to Friuls or clickable tracks) have always been a huge hassle for me (and for lots of others, it seems) - your guide will really be a big help when I start building this kit.

I have been looking for replacement tracks for mine since I am having problems with Mengs pin and link approach.I am thinking of using the plastic tracks from Tamiyas JS-2 and JSU 152 kits.I would like to know if the T-10M and JS series used the same type of track. Will ask that on the Russian forum. on Mengs track.

Bob

I know you're not a fan of these pin type tracks, but I've just used Bronco's similar style tracks for a KV-85......jig and pin arrangement. The approach I found works was put the links into the (lower jig half in your case), and with a small brush apply a drop of white/gator glue then pin one link at a time (get the pins off the sprues).....needle tweezers.....worked well and worst part was clean up links after removing them from sprues.

These are for KV-1S, KV-85, JS etc....not KV-1 as the box states

Thanks but the T-10 used a different type track.Something like was on the JS-4 I have been told.

Donald, could you please tell me the dimensions of large oil drums? Trumpeter has only small ones and I need to find a suitable replacement as all pics from 1968 show T-10 with large drums as well.

I just measured the Large Drums in this kit. The size I get is 16.5 mm in Diameter & 23.5 mm in length. I don't know if this is accurate, but this is the size for the Drums in this kit.

Yes I know, I forgot to paint the Ir. headlight.

Note how the Large Drums fit, the instructions are a bit confusing here.

The Final 2 Pics.

Final Thoughts.
This kit is really nice, the Track can be a little infuriating at times, but if you follow the method I have shown it should work for you. Hey, if it doesn't you could always glue them together like a set of Dragons Magic Track.
I wouldn't recommend using a solvent based wash for weathering them. The pins are very Delicate and could disolve with a solvent based wash.
Regards.

Donald,

This has been an excellent tutorial on how to deal with this kit; I have the Trumpeter version in my stash but your clear, instructional pictures (and texts) will still prove relevant - not least as Trumpeter provide only smoke canisters - and I will wish to fit fuel drums in due course.

Thanks again for an outstanding review and build log.
