Proposal for a Campaign: Back to Basics. Use 7 tools or less to start and complete an unstarted (new) model. Rules are:

1. No power tools (Dremel etc.).
2. Pictures to be posted of unstarted kit and tools being used.
3. Any After Market items and scratch building/detailing items are allowed but only the tools shown in your original post can be used to add them.
4. For finishing any products can be used (airbrush etc.)

Any thought or additions?

my only thought would be to not allow AM products.... after all we are talking about the rawest, most simple fun we can get from a kit..... back to basics when we were kids and used toothpicks and raided moms makeup drawer for tools (what, tell me you didnt). But I LOVE the idea.. I actually did one of these already! When I was in Iraq in 2009, I was blessed to be sent a couple kits and some paint.... unfortunately tools were at a premium, so my pocket knife doubled as an exacto, my Gerber multi-tool became tweezers, toenail clippers my sprue cutters, sandpaper from the carpenters, paint from the motorpool, and toothpics from the DFAC. It was without a doubt one of the most enjoyable kits I ever built....

Unfortunately the CH-47 I did, stayed in Iraq and I didnt take any pictures of it finished. As I recall it came out pretty good for the tools I had.

Howdy Y'all

I think Brian's projects capture the essence of a "back to basics" project. I would agree with no AM parts other than perhaps a metal barrel and decals. Some kits now come with a lot of PE if you need to bend some metal. Personally, I hate messing with old yellow, thick decals. I'll throw my name in the ring to get us to 10 interested persons. I've got a full schedule so this sounds like a good campaign to keep it simple and enjoyable. Great idea! Will it be limited to just armor? I've got a boatload of armor kits to build. How about letting us finish off some shelf queens while we're at it?

Take care,
Don "Lakota"

Hi all, thanks for the replies. WRT after market items, I think I'll leave it down to the builder... if you want to be a 'purist' then refrain from using it. For me the Wrecker came with 3 LZ AM sets so I will be using them.

Brian - I made two models whilst in Kosovo in 2002 so appreciate your efforts. I did take some basic tools in my box with me, however used cut up pallets as bases!

Save for bending some of the PE - even that stock in some kits - 7 tools? This should be easy-sneezy for me!

I typically use a number 11 knife, sandpaper, tweezers, parts-clipper, long-nosed plier, CA and model cement for the assembly. If CA and cement are part of the tools-list, I'm OK - that'll make my 7. Otherwise, I would add in a set of finger-twisted micro-drill bits (they come 10 in the little box) for the various holes. Painting, of course, gets the AB, compressor, little brushes, etc.

Plenty of kits to choose from! I'll have to choose one which doesn't have too complex an origami set needing a real folding tool... I'm IN.

Sadly guys, with only 6 respondents there doesn't seem to be enough to get this one off the ground. I for one will make my Dizzy T with basic tools - It's a very refreshing and reinvigorating experience.

I'm in, only because I litereally use glue sprue cutter and re-use sand paper. I have a sheet of 2,000 grit sand paper that has wet sanded literally 10 builds.

Sure, sounds like a good idea! It would almost be like taking a vacation from the norm...

BTW, I like the Ki.61 "Tony" on the bottom, right... Is that something that you built? I'm VERY into 1/48 Aircraft, myself...

Quick question, are different types of glue considered separate tools? Also, will putty or other fillers (if needed) be considered a tool or can that be exempted from the tool list count?

Signed up.

I am considering back to basics in many ways - maybe making an old school Matchbox kit for this one.

Looking forward to get started. This will be fun.

I am in,have model in mind. I guess i will need to come up with the 7 tools I will use. Do air brushes count as a tool or are they exempt Also does the model have to be military?

It starts 1 Feb, as per the posted rules and regs. I believe the campaigns admin need to make this thread a sticky. Nevertheless it's on!
