Dragon has announced another derivative of its "black-label" M48 patton, the T54E1 prototype.Est Arrival: February 2016.
Based on M48A1, dragon's T54E1(Item Code: DRA-3560) will feature a revised (as dragon claimed) upper hull as well as a new oscillating turret. The tracks and the canvas covering the oscillating axle will be made of DS plastic. It will probably has some new OVM such as travel lock but it is unknown whether the barrel will come in one-piece.
From my personal perspective, T54E1 is Dragon's another attempt to grab the niche market of World of tanks players as it has done before like M103 or Conqueror. If true, dragon will most likely do little if any research on the prototype T54E1 itself and therefore the model's accuracy can hardly be expected. Also judging from the CAD model, its details seem to be lacking, i.e. the periscopes on the commander's cupola are absurdly omitted. To sum up, Dragon's announcement at least solved the current absence of T54E1 kit on the market, albeit in a less-than-perfect form.(Though we may have get used to the "Black-Plague")
Feel free to comment.
Thanks!

According to the fact that it will be a Black Label "quality" kit ( unless they do some changements from the cad drawings...)and it will be the only game in town..i think that we need as much pictures of the real tank to correct it,so if someone has a walkaround or can adress me to a good one i'll be happy with it!!
I'm a real fan of this tank and i wish to realize it as better as possible when available.so any help is appreciated!!
Thanks in advance,
Marco

Here we go...let the Dragon Black Label attacks begin...
I'm just happy it is a new kit of a previously unavailable type. I can work with corrections (or not) with a basic starting point.

Gino, usually i dont do judgement of a kit from the cad drawings,i prefer to wait the real deal...but up to now all the Black Label kits had some issues (some of them big...)this doesnt mean that the next kit will be horrible, and who would have thought that a T54E1 will be ever produced in plastic??Glad to be proved wrong!!!In the meanwhile if i can find pictures of the real one i'll be ready for a super detailing of the kit!!

I don't know much about this tank, but Marco Folin just posted some good walkaround photos of the prototype on FB, so I took a close look at them. And this turret in CAD images above is just an abomination... Of course DML could still correct it, but the way it looks in those pics it is worse than their M103 turret.
Actually one just has to look at the excellent and accurate Ron's box art to see how badly the DML CAD is shaped.

Marco,
I can't give you the address of my contact without his permission, but I will ask if they are interested in improving this design. If they are and agree, I'll send you the address.

It looks like they just pulled the CAD model straight out of world of tanks. Then again, not surprising considering who Black label models are aimed at....

As a long-time lurker I've certainly been aware of what an emotional hot-button the Black Label tag is around here. In light of that I have to say I got a bit of a chuckle when looking at the promo posters above, showing (in what I can only assume is an unfortunate translation mix up)that the kit is chock full of "authentic looking" detail. You know, as opposed to actual "authentic" detail.

Funny. I fully enjoy these hate posts on black plague kits. Keep them coming. So entertaining. Just like when a car manufacturer puts out a $&i##y car, it deserves to be ridiculed. So is this consumer product.

Hi Remigijus,
Ironically WG has refined the model itself recently though I don't believe they have done the research either.

Despite all the negative comments, Dragon is making money at it, or they would not be doing it. And I find that funnier then all the negative comments, as Dragon is laughing at all the comments all the way to the bank.

Although it does seem to be the apparent case, Black Label kits are not specifically aimed at WG gamers. No where does Dragon say that. But yes, much of the vehicles in the BL line are featured in the game so it does "appear" to be so. But they are aimed at modellers and anyone interested in modelling.

Of course they do. But I'm just wondering how many people would acknowledge the existence of this tank if not for this game. After all It is one of the lucky beauties to be brought to light among countless Cold War prototypes by games while the remaining are usually given little care by the model brands

Even though the Black Label series may not be completely accurate, I think their products are pretty interesting. In my opinion I would be more interested in seeing one of these being built rather than a usual panther or Sherman build. Although the details are exact, I would still enjoy building this kit imho

Yes, it looks MUCH better. If Dragon kit was based on this 3D model, then it would much more acceptable.

SHORT UPDATE FROM DML:
The CAD images above are early version, the design is still a work in progress and DML actually have a very competent help on board for this project already.
I was shown a few very nice hand drawn sketches that will be used to prepare the improved design of the turret and they look fantastic.

Good to hear, but is that new try, or have they already done the similar procedure for their previous disasters? Hopefully they can completely redesign their M103 kits with those competent helps.

I'm not sure, but I think this is new. No way they would create such a caricature as their M103 if they had similar quality sketches made for them as they now have for T54E1.

Let's hope that they make a good model this time. This is an interesting subject and the first time I've heard about this tank.
What about those sketches? Are you not allowed to share them?

I actually had the measurements for Conqueror that I used to do the review, months before it was released. I offered them to Dragon via a mutual contact who knows them well. They declined
You can lead a horse to water.....
As much as I don't rate the black label kits I've bought (saladin and conqueror were nothing short of terrible) or the M103 after seeing Pawel's review, I do hope they start to get into their stride and this is a good kit.
I have the M48A3 and I haven't looked at it closely but I believe that kit is OK?
