Is this a totally-new tooling or upgrading an older kit? It looks very promising.

Would make a nice centerpiece for a diorama.

Good choice by Tamiya - After seeing the Bovington SU-76 and reading how MANY were manufactured I always did wonder how come there was never a nice model.

How long until a PE set?

The crew is a good idea - they will at least fit.

Out of the box, the kit represents a 1944 or early 1945 production example. All of the photographs I've seen from the Korean War show the post-war 1945 variant with the higher rear superstructure plate and the smaller 'sloped' portion on the upper edge of the superstructure sides.
I'm also thinking of doing a Korean War example but that will require some surgery. The stowage was also reconfigured.

I've been curious until now about the museum piece they were showing on the placards during the Tamiya Fair.
The box top shows a message of gratitude to the Zadorozhny Vehicle Museum for their co-operation. However, the kit depicts neither of the museum's SU-76M, the pieces were likely only employed to obtain the general shape and feel of the real thing.
There are a good lot of interesting vehicles in that museum, hopefully, Tamiya's R&D team made the most of their visit.

too bad the price tag is going to be over $65, as a guess

Eh, comparing a kit this size to their more recent MM series products, I say the price tag will hover around $30.

I hope you are right, but these days $30 as a price point barely gets you a Jeep. I agree that it is a smaller kit, for sure it's not the size of a Nashorn, but it'll go for WAY more than $30.

What exactly do you think new 1/35 kits go for these days, at least as MSRPs?

try Meng, Takom, Dragon, or Tamiya..
Smart alec answer I know, but new releases are not cheap.
Tamiya new tooled kits run from $50+ to the ridiculous $75-80 for the Nashorn, JGSDF T10, Elephant etc, at full price, at release. Let's not even go into what the old dogs go for on re-re-re-release.
Dragon kits aren't $30 out the door day one any longer. I wish they were, but aren't and haven't been for a while.
The days of a Trumpeter MBT for $30 are gone as well. The newest tanks T80 and T72's run over $75, again at release and at full price.
I'm not saying that I'll pay that price, but on release, yeah I think they'll run $65. Maybe I am being a pessimist, but the way the winds are blowing makes me think this.
I'd love to pay $40 for a new release from a US supplier. But I'm not holding my breath

Sprue bros has the new Tamiya Easy 8 Sherman at 43 bucks, that's under 50. You can always find brand new kits cheaper over seas, even with postage. Check Hobbyeasy or Luckymodels.
