Those are T54 Metal Cleat Tracks on this particular M4A2... A Firefly would, I believe, have been issued with British-styled Metal Cleat Tracks- I'm not exactly sure of which type. Maybe the experts on British Shermans could help us out in this respect...

The T62 steel cuff is probably what you refer to here and is a Chrysler built track supplied on nearly all new delivered M4A4 which mainly went tot he British. it was not a British track per say. Later Chrysler M4's seem to have been delivered with t48 rubber chevron tracks.

So since we are in a Sherman discussion. Is there a good 1/35 kit of a M4A1E8, or is that model something you have to build out of conversion pieces?

There is no kit of the pure M4A1E8. There are several M51 Shermans that were based on the M4A1E8.

I have seen a few M4A1E8 builds that took the available M4A1's from Dragon and Tamiya and kit bashed the 'E8 version. Mostly for IDF tanks though. This is one of my planned projects, and I have the Tamiya M1 SuperSherman a Asuka M4A3E8 and the Asuka M4 hull parts saved up for it.

The easiest bash would be to get the Tamiya M1 Super Sherman kit and their M4A3E8 and swap suspensions. Most M4A1E8 had the later turret fittings. It is on my to do list as it was a common NJ National Guard 50th Armored Division tank.

I built an M4A1E8 5 or 6 years ago. I used the bottom half of the TASCA -E8 and mated it to a resin FORMATIONS Late M4A1 CAST 47-degree "Big Hatch" Upper Hull, and aftermarket PE Fenders. Then I fitted the left-over TASCA T23 Turret to the whole shebang, and detailed it with an older ABER "Generic" M4-M4A3E8 PE set, resin FORMATIONS Tools, and bits of stowage from a variety of A/M sources. For Tracks, I used the FRIUL Metal T80 Steel Chevron Track set. The Main Gun, .50 and .30cal Metal Barrels came from RB Models...

Being an incurable "Shermaholic", I ALSO built a VERY RARE M4A1E8-variant, using the same parts as above, with the EXCEPTION of the Turret- Instead, I used a Late "Low Bustle" M4/M4A1 Turret, with Loader's Hatch & Late Commander's Cupola with Vision Blocks, an ARMORSCALE 75mm Main Gun, and an M34A1 Gun Mantlet, all of which I got out of my own stock of extra Sherman parts...

They were both fun builds, in that they represented 2 vehicles that are definitely not "mainstream"...

The SuperSherman is based on the old, old, Tamiya M4A3. But I think you're right. I did a quick test fit and it looks like the Super hull parts will fit to the 'E8 lower hull with a little tweaking. The rear idler bases would need to be cut from the 'E8 rear and put on the Super rear.

You're welcome Dennis,

It's not easy to see that it's an M4 composite. The only thing I had to go on was that there were no Fireflies based on the M4A1. Only the M4, M4 composite, and M4A4.

john

Hi John,
Look at the rear corner of the Firefly 1C and you will note how square it is. A dead give away for composite hull Shermans.
BTW guys I believe the correct description for the gun is 17pdr not lber.
I have the old Dragon kit of the 1c and plan to build mine based on the photo shown here (covered in Churchill track. The kit looks pretty good to me (but ask Roy for the definitive opinion). It has markings for the South Albertas, rubber chevron tracks, not T54's. The road wheels etc are hollow and need replacing.
I have the South Albertas history and there are several 1c's pictured on T54's but the regiment did use rubber chevron track, 3 bar cleat track and T54's all at the same time. The usual up armouring track of choice seems to be T54.
