Figures look great, I particularly like the officer. Following along with great interest. Al

I love what you have done so far and your idea for the finished diorama. To me WWI Battlefields are the most interesting battlefields to build. They were occupied for so long that a lot of debris and corpses can be incorporated into a small area. Do not forget to put a rat or two somewhere in the scene. LOL Thanks for taking the time to photo and post your work, I will be following till the end.

Here's a couple of shots of the initial terrain forming. I'm using plaster cloth and celluclay, with assorted gravel and debris thrown in. Probably take a few days to dry. Then I'll start the base painting and detailing, adding more debris etc.
Then the barbed wire....

Looking good Tim...., you can really let your imagination run wild! If you can reference as many wartime pics as possible, for even the smallest detail or idea, you'll be onto a winner. Did something similar afew years back, although on a smaller area, and used a number of photos, even screen shots of movies/documentaries saved onto an iPad, really helped. The figures are looking really good....great job!
The area in the near corner does seem alittle wide for a frontline trench..? Or is that just the camera angle?
Look forward to seeing how you progress....
Simon.

You're right, it's a bit wide. I'm going to insert a "triangle of terrain" to remedy that. I thought about leaving it oversize for artistic/visibility purposes, but ultimately didn't like that idea or how it looks.
More to come...

OK, slow but steady progress. Been focusing on the terrain, though I still have 3 British infantry to finish and 3 Germans, but decided to focus on the terrain.
Here, you get a better idea of what this will look like, including base coloration. You can also see I've added a "back" to the German trench so it looks a bit less spacious.
An unfortunate denizen of a shell crater. He will be "blended" into the terrain with some additional plaster/etc.
And a couple of composition shots, so you'll have a better idea of where the figures are going to be.
Started working on the barbed wire. Going for this look.

I have a bunch of wooden posts from a Pegasus kit I'll be using, along with tons of Verlinden wire.
More to come!

I've used scrap sprue to make posts. Just drag a fine-toothed razor saw up and down the sprue, to give it a wood grain effect. Then I roughen up the visible end with the saw and an Xacto blade. Your dio is looking good, it's really starting to come together. Al

Thanks--and thanks for that tip! I'll definitely be doing that, as I'm going to need more posts. I can use thicker wire to add the little hooks to the post.
Happy with my progress, even though life/work tends to interfere from time to time!

This is really looking great, actually quite accurate (imho).
The triangle remedy was what I thought when viewing the pic, and you've done a nice job of it overall.
Great work w/ the barbed wire, the figure poses, and on the planking too. Nice touch w/ the whistle-blower as well.
Oh, and yes, I agree.
Real-life interference makes this hobby, our passion, a real challenge.

We haven't seen a WWI scene being done here in a while. Looks good. You can never have enough barbed wire.

Thanks! That was one set of the old Verlinden barbed wire, sprayed aluminium (will be weathered later).
I have two more sets coming to finish the horizontal wiring and then add a concertina section in between the posts.
Going out of town for a few days shortly, but will resume when I get back.
Cheers,

Slowly but surely! I added some celluclay to the base to show the tank churning up ground. May have to add a bit more, but I'm trying to not overdo the mud as Cambrai wasn't like 3d Ypres.
Working on the German figures and the last couple of Tommies. Need to add a bit of wire and then the final terrain detailing will start.
The light is at the end of the tunnel and for once it's not a train...

I know that guy in the bomb crater! I have his Japanese cousin lying about in my beach diorama!
Great looking terrain! Looking forward to more photos!
Not sure if the "atmospheric" appearance of water on the wire is just the paint or the photos or what but I like it... would play well with a winter scene.
And one can never have enough barbed wire in a WWI scene... I agree with everyone else on that!
Keep 'em coming! Good work so far!

What you may be seeing is the light reflecting off the silver bits of the wire--or superglue. I haven't yet finished the last of the weathering and the ultimately dullcote spray over.

Tim, that's all coming together nicely. The figures are great. Just goes to show with a few boxes and some imagination the poses are pretty much endless. I much prefer figures that people have modified to the pose that they want rather than OOB. It's nice to see another First World War dio as they don't appear very often and this one's shaping up to be a real beauty. I like the use of the gully. We sometimes forget that battles weren't fought road edge to road edge and what would have been farms, roads, ditches etc ended up in the middle of no mans land and often provided natural cover amongst the craters. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

OK, finally done! This is tank B-28 "Black Arrow II" supporting infantrymen from 16th Brigade, 6th Infantry Division overrunning a Hindenburg Line support trench. Tragically, B-28 was destroyed with the loss of its entire crew on November 23 during a later action. More pics to come, hopefully in better light and a more neutral background. If the weather holds, I'll go outdoors this weekend!

Thought about that--my dad said the Germans were not muddy enough. But I though the early stages of the battle were fairly dry compared to later (or at least not sodden like Ypres).
But I can certainly add a bit more....
Cheers!
