I scared myself when I worked out how much this lot cost me. Obviously not as much as some have spent but not an insubstantial amount
I try not to do that myself.

Ha - ha - I am loving this ! Very therapeutic as I thought I was the only person planning on living to 300 or so to build everything I currently have . Hmmm - better make that 500 to allow for future releases, aftermarket stuff et all. And this doesn't allow for all my other hobbies/interests !
As I mentioned in a thread on the sister site ( the one that deals in things with wings ) I often wonder what percentage of kits manufactured actually get built .
Given the theory of Economy of Scale we stash builders due the modeling world a service by bringing down the per unit cost of kits . This altruistic and philanthropic ideal is what keeps me buying kits - ( does anyone believe me ?)

I also wonder how many kits we buy that then get eclipsed by better releases...the Maquette 2cm flak 38t, Italeri 15CWT, etc come to mind!

For me, all my Tamiya Tiger kits have been eclipsed by the Dragon and Rye Field Models releases but I am not going to dump my Tamiya kits for new ones because I like the ease of assembly of the Tamiya kits. However, my Zvesda and Tamiya T-34s have been outdone by Dragon's releases. I bought just about everyone of the Dragon T-34s except the outrageously expensive Cyberhobby highgrade kits. So now I am patiently waiting for a more reasonably priced STZ T-34/76 to come along. The Academy Merkava 3s have been outdone by Meng's offerings. I also have a few of the kits that I bought were for planned conversions and kitbashes that haven't really gotten off the ground. (Some of those topics are available in injection plastic). I got a few still born conversions. So I guess if I had a crystal ball of what injection kits would have been produced, I would have been able to pass up on about 3 dozen kits.

I'll chime in just to put things into perspective
Something like 200+ kits finished and stored in display cabinets.
Hang on now: More than 10 times as many unbuilt, some started a little but raising a family and renovating the apartment has taken some time.
Total count is 2870, mostly 1:35 but there are some 1:72 helicopters, submarines and various torpedoboats.
Call it crazy if you like, my wife does

My stash doubled when a friend, who had a hobby shop that failed and he kept his stock, passed away and his estranged family didn't want his kits. We sold 90% of them to raise money for his funeral at a massive garage sale and what didn't sale no one wanted so I kept. Got lotsa dragon t-80's, t-72's, Kirins (Lion of Babylon and M-84's) a couple Gunze-Sangyo M60's Rise with passive armor (one was traded), and a Halcyon Nostromo. Add those to my own kits and there are more than I'll ever build. But I'll damn sure try.

About 12 years ago I changed my modeling philosophy. I decided to keep after market to an absolute minimum and to build out of the box. Simplify, simplify, simplify. I wanted to have fun again and relieve stress rather than increase it by building. So time to completion shank from months to weeks.
And then all my spare funds vanished and I am forbidden to add any kits. Though I have 300 kits and an equal number of figures at my current rate of building I could get through my stash in 20 years. But I am stuck with the old releases and can only dream of anything new unless I fund its purchase through selling what I have.
It's made the Hobby almost manageable. Heck, one year while I was on disability, I built 75 kits. This past year I have done over 20. Certainly very satisfying to have a kit built on the shelf rather than collecting after market or research for a project that will never come to pass. And over the years I have done a lot of that. I hope I have finally learned my lesson so I can point to what I have accomplished rather than castles in the sky that I plan to do at some unspecified time that never arrives.

Since the item seems to attract only those who are open and honest enough to reveal their (enormous) amount of boxes, just started and half finished kits, there must be ship loads of other stocks as well. Come on, those who didn't speak out, don't feel bad: you are not alone with your addiction.
I am just wondering if model producers add something to their plastic which makes us run into the local hobby shop over and over again.
We should do some research on that and, who knows, we can sue them to get money back and buy new models again.......
Modeling comes closer to an addiction than to a hobby, I am afraid.
Time to start an alternative for the AA. Call it the AM, for Anonymous Modelers?

When I do, I figure my kids will have some money for college LOL....
Seriously though.. the goal is to build them all (well, most of them... some will inevitibly be sold to fund new kits and others traded, and a few will end up in my sons hands as soon as he learns enough patience to build one)

Thanks for this topic. The past few years I felt a bit guilty never to finish any build, though a few are really well underway by now and should reach completion soon.
Comparing your stashes and my ridicoulous stash of about 20 unstarted/ unfinished kits (plus loads of AM and figures), I understand that any feeling of guilt and shame I had was completely exxagerated and uncalled for. I will now proceed to buying at least 5 - 10 more kits...
So in a nutshell: Thanks for robbing me of my bad conscience

Stashing is a hobby unto itself. There are some who do not understand it, personally I enjoy it. My stash is inventoried and on a spread sheet, including aftermarket. every year during Christmas vacation I do a physical inventory. I calculate I need to live to 97 to finish everything currently in the stash....my retirement

I've just done the cupboard under the stairs which is where I keep figures. I currently have the following untouched:-
107x Boxes of DML figures (16x Gen 2)- Mainly German
2x DML 120mm German Mortars with Crew
1x DML Rocket Launcher and Crew
1x SpzB41 and crew
2x Leichtgeschutz with Fallschirmjager crews
2x DML Allied Weapons sets
2x DML German Wepaons set 1
2x DML German Weapons set 2
2x DML German Communications Centre
5x Boxes of Tristar figures
5x Boxes of Masterbox figures
17x Miniart buildings
There's about 50 or so figures on odd sprues that have yet to be touched but as they're not in boxes I don't count them. Whilst I do build vehicles I have to admit I do prefer building figures as I like to display vehicles in dios so figures are a must. If I see something at a good price figurewise I'll pick it up as I know it will come in handy later on. I very rarely build anything out of the box as I don't want my figures to look the same as everyone elses whereby people look at a dio and say that's DML set such and such. I modify my figs to fit their environment and what I visualise them doing mentally.
My vehicle stash isn't as bad but in my living room pile there is :-
2x Tamiya Horch 1a
1x Tamiya Steyr 1500
1x Tamiya Panzer III
2x Tamiya Kubelwagen
1x Tamiya Pak 40
1x Italeri Pak 38 and crew
1x DML Flak 38
1x DML Sdkfz 250/10
2x DML Sdkfz 251 mit Wurfrahmen 40 3 in 1
1x DML Sdkfz 251 251/9 3 in 1
1x DML Sdkfz 251/7 3 in 1
1x Italeri Sdkfz 240/1
1x Italeri Sdkfz 240 Gepard
2x Masterbox BMW sidecar combos
1X Itaeri Panzer IV H
1x Zvezda R12 Motorcycle
1x Tamiya Feldkuche
1x Tamiya Flak 36
1x Italeri Mercedes Benz 1500
1x Italeri Opel Blitz
1x Tristar Panzer IVD
1x Tamiya Sdkfz 250/9
1x ICM Luftkraftswagen
1x Tristar Flak 38 with SS crew
1x DML Kubelwagen Ambulance set
1x Italeri Demag 7 with Flak 38.
I've got another stash in a cupboard upstairs of Allied stuff but I'm not sure what I've got in there as I've not looked for a bit.
So that's where my stash stands at the moment. I hadn't realised quite how many figures I'd got till now My stash of DML figures is better than most model shops LOL. Some I've got a couple of boxes of as they're versatile and I can use them for different times of the war like Waffen SS in smocks or I've bought them as part of a job lot on ebay. I dread to think how much I've spent!

What is doubly frustrating however is I managed to break my airbrush last night cleaning it so I'm going to have to buy another one. Buggar! Still I suppose I can work on figures for a bit if I can't spray

The Dragon OT-34 is one version I do not have. I don't have the Dragon Beute Panzer versions either. That is a nice price.
The last few years I have been bulk buying mainly from Lucky Models and Sincere Hobbies whenever they have the year end discount or $2 flat shipping fee. I cannot remember how long ago I bought a kit from a YVR area hobby store. I only buy tools, paints and the odd book from the shops now.

Stephan, I like your way of thinking. As lately I have been thinking the same...build out of the box and have fun. It's hard to get out of the mind set of fixing everything possible and never finish a project as we get burned out. I have garage full of kit in 1/32, 1/35, 1/24-25, 1/12 and so on. And how many did I complete last year or this year...zero...nada...zilch. Sure, I started few but they are sitting under my bed or closet waiting to see the light of day again. I'm thinking pick a marking (1/32 jet now) and build oob with main focus of painting/weathering and final result.
