Hi Guys

Don, thanks for the steer on the Matilda. I have some references that show early Matildas with a rear rack for fuel cans rather than the big tube shaped tank. I think that's what you mean? If you ever find the Zundapp reference it would be great to see it too. I'm going to go hunting on the internet to see what I find.

Peter, your idea really made me smile. You know I might just try something like it. Thanks also for the info on the Valentine. It is back in the stash.

So, that's probably decided it for me. I'm going to try some version of the Matilda parked up next to the bike while it is being salvaged/sold.

Now there's a heap of time to do research and try not to start.

Oh one more question. I have an SdKfz 232 early type in the stash - the one without the big armoured plate on the front. Does anyone know if it would also be eligible? I dont think I'll use it but it would be good to know just in case.

Happy modelling.

Steve

Hey Steve, I believe the 232 with the bedframe antenna is eligible...

The Sd.Kfz. 232 vehicle does qualify, but a quick google image search indicates they should have the extra armour plate in front. Experiences in France revealed the need for additional protection in front. Conversely, photos of the 263 version in Africa appears not to have this added - maybe because they operated only in rear areas?

I guess you have the AFV kit, so I don't know how well aftermarket PE will fit, as Voyager and Eduard (both intended for Tamiya) include this extra armour.

Some discussion of the early kit here, and suggested license plate numbers for African service:

What version or versions of the Marmon-Herrington armored car would have been there? I saw that there were some South African troops and that at least one of the armored car units had these, but it doesn't really specify which, or did I miss that detail.

Yes, you must of missed the link I had posted on the previous page, it contains the OOB (order of battle) for both sides at Gazala: https://forum.axishistory.com//viewtopic.php?t=104408

Both the Mk II and III Marmons are mentioned.
Haven't checked for Crusader, will let someone else tackle that one.

Hi Y'all
Wikipedia has some Crusader pics for Operation Crusader.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Crusader
Hope this helps. I'm toying with building a Crusader also. I might just buy a Tamiya 1/35 Sd.Kfz. 232 also. Too many decisions.
Take care,

Thanks for the info on the SdKfz232 guys. Now I'm decided, it will be an allied scene with the Zundapp making an appearance as booty.

Talking of references. If you can get it, check out Militaria Magazine, number 81 - Rommel in Libya ,1941. Its a French language publication with 80 pages of great black and white photos. Also Steel Masters number 15 has some lovely examples of finished work. The theme is Tunisia 1943 but the techniques described could work just as well for us. There's a lot on Youtube too including some colour film and some black and white that's been colourised.

This campaign looks like its going to be a winner.

happy modelling guys.

I saw the other link on the Marmon-Herringtons. Now that I've seen this one, I can use either of the versions since they're all Mk II. I think I prefer the one with what I think is the 15mm gun.

Damian,
Glad to have you with us!

Steve,
Are you the Steve Andrews of Mirage III at Aeroscale fame?

I just realized that our avatars are gone!

Hi Robert and Gary

Yes it me. I'm pleased to be sharing a campaign with you guys, and meeting some new folks here too.

As for the avatars, I'm afraid I'm lost. Is it just me or have they all gone?

Have a good evening.

Hi everyone. With the talk of a post post Operation Crusader campaign happening I got to thinking that maby I should save my ausf L for that. I came across this:

Is this proper timeframe for operation Crusader? And thank you to everyone who has posted/linked pics. Very amazing images. It's terrifying how smashed some of these vehicles were.

Here's another pic also with seams on

Come to think of it I may go for the old Tamiya Pz II kit for this campaign...

An Ausf G from Panzer Regiment 5, the original Deutsches Afrikakorps.

Look at the hastily applied RAL 8000. Painted right over the spare wheel as well as everything else. Urgency and a shortage of paint were the causes. This would have been shortly after their arrival in Libya.

I took a crack at this a couple of years ago.

Wayne,
Your Panzer IIIg looks great! Very worn paint to be sure. I'm still deciding on how I'm going to do my IIIg.

Robert,
That's a fantastic photo just for the amount of detail regarding all of the gear carried externally.

Wayne that Panzer III G looks really good!
Well I finally caved in and pre ordered the Dragon DAK Panzer III command tank (kit #6901). That should put me in the proper timeframe for this campaign. I'm saving the Panzer III L for the coming Tunisia Campaign...hint hint

HI Guys,

What Operation Husky campaign?

Is the hint for me?

Anybody can submit a proposal for a campaign and run it. I'm not connected to the Kitmaker Network in any fashion. I'm just a guy who likes a social aspect to modelling and the motivation it can provide to me and others who are taking part. Also the education I glean from what we share in the campaign, whether it be history or technique.

It's pretty simple to do. The main task lays in visiting the forum everyday, and paying attention to what's happening, responding, and keeping a record. I kept a record on the front page of the Tank Hunters Campaign not only for everyone else, but also for me. The last thing you want to do is get to the end of a 60-page thread and reread the whole thing looking for a detail you might have missed. But I'm sure others keep records in their own way.

If you really want one, just go to the Campaigns forum and read the: Campaign Tutorial

The real Campaigns Administrators are always willing to help if you have a question or need something fixed or updated.

If your campaign is popular, you can count on doing something on the thread every day. I think the longest spell of inactivity on Tank Hunters was three days. And there weren't many of those gaps in activity.

Tank Hunters taught me not to engage in running more than one at a time. And for me, I think it was good to have some time off between Tank Hunters and this one. Others may be different.

Does the Nike ad still say: "Just do it"

Best wishes,

Gaz

Bryan,
Thanks for the encouragement! Really though, two campaigns would be too much for me to do responsibly. We'll have to wait a while.

They were diffidently there.

In fact here's a idea for some extras.

Quoted Text

These machines excelled in the Balkans in 1941, but in North Africa, although the Afrika Korps received lots of them, there were complaints about their lack of effective range, due to the limited volume of their fuel tanks. Many additional jerrycans were carried, fitted everywhere on the hull and mudguards. The hull itself received additional storage boxes, which also acted like extra armor. In most cases, an additional rack was fitted to the nose, receiving five more jerrycans.
