One other problem, unless I just got it wrong,is that when I try to get a picture uploaded,I have reduce it to 800×600.When I posted it somewhere else,it shows up pretty small.

I was uploading 1280 wide photos last night - bigger size does mean of course taking up more of the allocated space.

The limitation on available space for individual users - again, that is a matter for Jim, perhaps that is something that he might consider reviewing, as it is sounding like demand is there.

Some clarification when it comes to Imgur use...I have no problems sharing photos from there on armorama or other sites...like this:

What Imgur is trying to prevent and what Photobucket was also trying to do, though with horrific results for everyone, is that some people where using their hosting services to display photos on Ebay or Amazon for their own personal gain (i.e. selling things), which they mean by 3rd party hosting. What we do is considered embedding a photo.

Keep in mind sharing photos requires very little bandth in grand scheme of things and server storage space is "cheap", at least in the context we use it for. Photobucket is on its last legs and what it pulled is part of its death throes is going through.

I killed my PB account too. Flickr? Haven't figured out how to get a photo to post here other than as a link (which is almost useless).

I would love it if Kitmaker was able to come up with something like FB for posting photos. I'd even consider a small monthly fee (PB's $40 is asinine).

Were I to use the Kitmaker function as is, I'd run out of space within a few pages of my P1000 Landkreuzer blog. As it is, I've deleted old finished "campaign" pictures so I have room to upload more recent pics. I see the same for current builds.

PB screwed us (free service or not, that's my opinion [remember Geocities???]) - here's hoping there is another alternative.

I have used PB for years. I got a 'threatening' email from them the other day. I figured I'd take the path of least resistance and just pay them. So I clicked through to the payment page. Are you ready? JUST UNDER FOUR FREAKIN' HUNDRED DOLLARS PER YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more posting for me. No more photos here, no more on Scale Auto, the airplane one....FB only. That is insane!! If they had asked for $50 they'd have my money already, but they're greedy. I'll keep looking for a solution; I'm sure there is one, but the solution now is no posting; a shame as I've always valued this forum.

Patrick, you didn't open this can of worms, it's been brewing since May on Kitmaker when Jerry Rutman started having problems posting his photos-- then the blow-up happened with PB deleting everyone's photos and replacing them with a "pegged fun meter" showing thier accounts were full. Kitmaker is not alone, angst has appeared on Large Scale Planes, Hyperscale, Missing Lynx, Modeling Madness, Aircraft Resource Center and on many other non-modeling web sites too. For a Luddite like me who's been lurking for years, it's a lot like standing in the airport, holding a ticket to Tokyo while watching a news report in the waiting area about Godizila stomping around. Seeing all you guys gettting tromped on by a giant is not a reassuring feeling for a guy who's favorite camera was an Instamatic, and still has photos on the coffee table in a paper album. I don't understand why a business like PB would self destruct like this. What PB is doing is holding photos hostage for a fee so who would do business with them? But in the interest of getting back to modeling, where do we go from here? Which site would be best to use?

Russ,
According to the email I received, all my photos are right there for the downloading. And it's okay if they are gone since I have all them in my own files.

Here is what I don't understand and maybe someone can explain it. Over on the right hand side of your photo, there was a place that sais something like "Share". When you clicked on it, it gave you the address which we all dutifully copied and then pasted into Armorama or Scale Auto Enthusiast or where ever. If they didn't want us copying our own uploads, then why give it as an option.

I guess PB and Fotki and all those others figure we are somehow making money or that Armorama is somehow making money off my photos and they want their cut. But if I am making money, then the checks must be getting lost in the mail! And I see very little in the way of advertising on these sites associated with Kitmaker network.

But whatever the case, I will be deleting all my photos from PB and moving on. I hate being bullied by people that I've done nothing but support. I guess they are just pissed because I didn't buy any of their products.

I've replaced all my pix from PB by re-uploading them to my Google+ account .
Free and way faster -- though I think the file size is slightly smaller , not by very much though .
I should have switched long ago .

Is it possible that Armorama could have it's very own version of PB??

John, not being funny, but you did know about this already?

http://photos.kitmaker.net/

I guess you mean "more like" PB?

Silly me...lol...Kitmaker I'm well aware of. I've posted there. Yes, why not morph Kitmaker to function "more like" PB...

Well, from what I have seen so far - looking out over the various fora I frequent - is that the only people who got locked out or got their pics replaced by the warning are ones who exceeded the 2GB limit on free accounts. I have not had anyone chime in who had a paid account that was locked, and I still have all my pics where I posted them (except the ones I went ahead and deleted when this started).

If this is not the case, I wish someone would let me know because that is what I am seeing.

Adam is right about Google+, 15GB of free storage, with unlimited for photos below a certain size (means just not full size MBs big basically).

For those interested here is a quite recent guide to free storage currently available:

It depends, mostly on how much / if any compression has been applied; reducing to that size will often make them 200/300kb without anything else being done, but applying 25% compression will normally bring them under 100kb, so in 500MB you could potentially fit 5000 photos. Size can also be affected by what is in the photo, so taking them on a nice clean uniform coloured background will produce a smaller file than if you take them on a modelling mat which is covered in tons of multicolour paint splatter and has loads of junk lying around...

Obviously on a 5GB drive you might fit 50000 such photos.

I totally agree that we are spoiled now by the likes of Facebook which allows direct upload of unprocessed photos straight into posts. Something clever is going on however in terms of compressing the photos on the fly as they upload. Decent cameras on smartphones are creating files of 5 or 6 MB, but I'm sure that by the time they get on the FB server they are more like 100kb.

I saw this on another forum,it might answer that question.

looks like the backlash from the world has had a small effect. The Terms of Use now including the follow statement and it does appear in all CAPS:

· ANY PAYING MEMBER WHOSE PLUS ACCOUNT WAS IN GOOD STANDING AS OF JUNE 1, 2017, SHALL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE ALL THE PHOTOBUCKET SERVICES THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO HIM/HER ON SUCH DATE, INCLUDING IMAGE LINKING AND 3RD PARTY IMAGE HOSTING, UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2018 AS LONG THEY MAINTAIN THEIR CURRENT PLUS ACCOUNT SUBSCRIPTION OR A HIGHER LEVEL PLUS ACCOUNT SUBSCRIPTION DURING SUCH PERIOD OF TIME.

but hey, here, I'll post the link again for anyone who is looking for an alternative:

What completely baffles me is that when I log in to PB, it states that I have a plan called "Plus20", but I find no mention of it in their terms or plan descriptions. I don't pay for it either, so I have no idea how I got it.

Apparantly, I have used 4% of the allowed 20Gb. I am still able to embedd pics on various forums.

Anybody else know anything about this mysterious "Plus 20 plan"?

So is anyone who meets the criteria to stay til' dec. 31 2018 going to stay, or is everyone starting to move their photos elsewhere, just curious?

I've opened accounts with both Imgur and Flickr. There seems to be some discussion about what constitutes 3rd party linking or just direct linking. Since I don't post kiddie porn or other illegal stuff, I'll use Imgur until they shut me down for whatever reason. Trying to figure out how Flickr works. I got the image upload part but now trying to learn how to link my images to sites like this one.

Thanks Anthony, I guess this is the case, but I won't be waiting until 12/18 for that bomb to hit. Time to make changes already now.

The other problem is that posts on Armorama are locked for editing after a short period of time, so I guess when this PB s**t hits the fan for me, those posts/threads will be ruined forever, just like many other PB users are already experiencing.

I think I am one of those users that meets the criteria until Dec 2018, but don't know for sure. I won't be hanging around PB to find out. I will be moving my photos elsewhere. Fortunately, I have all the original files all on my hard drive (of course), so whatever PB decides to do with my account in the future, the images will not be lost.

All old bloggs, threads and posts will be ruined of course, and I am not sure I will be going back to fix them (if they are even editable any more).

My Facebook modeling page will probably be my prime "blogg space" moving forwards, lets hope FB doesn't decide to join this party and start screwing us over as well by charging for image upload and posting (that would of course cause a massive outrage from almost 2 billion** facebook users across the globe :-) ).

As I said before, sites like this are better than FB. If you wanted to follow a build like this one: https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/200509#2203237

which has covered years, you couldn't do it. On many forums you can get info with out joining but I've yet to see a FB model group that you can't access without joining and I've been refused a few times. On the ones I've been on before I killed my FB account, there was more cutting and flaming than decent conversation, information, help, answers or critique. That's not tolerated on a lot forums or they have places for it and it's not because I'm a guy who wants everyone to play nice, it's because most people want honest opinions, help, answers and advice. Having fun is fine but tearing someone up just for fun can be discouraging to young/new modelers who want info. I don't social media, I don't care or need to know what you like and you don't need to know what I like. I don't live with a phone permanently attached to my hand in fact I don't have one. Most days I'm on the internet long enough to check out a few sites, buy something or pay a bill. That's it. I have a life that involves hands on doing things so I want answers not trolls.

This photobucket thing is going to kill this kind of site as more people go to FB.
