Looks like another great Tamiya offering, but.... why don't manufacturers include driver figures with tank kits anymore? It just seems odd that the commander and loader would be riding around in a relaxed atmosphere with thier hatches open while the driver is buttoned up-- it makes no sense when you think about it. It used to be Tamiya and a couple of other older manufacturers included half torso figures for this. Why not now? I'm speaking from some experience here, having commanded M-60A1 and M551 units, and crewed my share of M113s too-- if the TC and loader feel safe enough to "unbutton", the driver's certainly would be unbuttoned too-- it's just safer to drive that way.

Wish they added the Tokyo Ordnance Depot modifications. There are a few pics in Hunnicut's book showing that some survived to have the Tiger faces added. The name on the turret had to be placed differently due to the placement of the spare wheel. Was the face on C-7 painted red?

Look at the rest of the pictures and you'll see that for the first time a M4A3 kit will have the postwar reinforced engine deck door hinges. Huge plus for those who like to do postwar Sherman's.

I swear they wait until I've bought the old kit and only then do they announce a new and improved version.

Unlike some other Sherman (Tasca) kits the drivers periscopes are not mounted so not only are they buttoned up but driving by the "force". When I was a tank driver I was always head up especially in traffic. I only buttoned up for gunnery. When i moved to M1s that changed after a few years on the tanks due to the occasional failure of the hold open latch. Drivers were killed by swing hatches.

Almost all WW2 and Korean War pictures of tanks moving around out of combat show the drivers up.

I've never seen one of Rice's Red Devils with the front painted red like that, before.

From the placard in the Tamiya Fair, there were at least two color photos and a handful of black and white ones.

Provided by David Doyle, it was possibly obtained from the private collection of someone who served or is familiar with the battalion. I have no clue whether it's a colorized photo or not but it does appear genuine.

Thank you!!! The more I look at it the more I think it is a colorized picture, though

Steve Willoughby: the Tasca M4A3E8 Korean War and the JGSDF M4A3E8 have both had the reinforced engine grate hinges.

the Asuka Korean War Sherman has been out for years. Bought a couple on a whim. Later bought the WWII M4a3e8 from Tamiya at $45, and really liked most of it (tracks?). Of course I had to compare the Tamiya with the industry standard. Tamiya looked real good with the exceptions listed. We may see a serious bargain here if the $45 price tag holds true. Still would have rather seen them do a M12 GMC.

The (only) other color photograph on Tamiya's placard.

This shows the tank out of focus, peeking in the background of what appears to be a group photo of the crew.

Not all of the Korean War M4A3E8s has the reinforced engine grate hinges. The a photo in Hunnicutt's book of a modified M4A3E8 in the Tokyo Ordnance Depot doesn't have them.
See this photo of another presumably from CONUS;

I don't find Shermans the most interesting of tanks. I've got one and that seemed enough. But this is such a great looking kit I'm sorely tempted. Plus I don't have a Korean war subject.

I won't be painting it red though. I don't like that. Hopefully they had some with the face but not the red front.

This is a welcome release, even though Tasca's Korean War M4A3E8 is a brilliant kit. Love the Red front armour plate, had not seen that before in any literature I have read.

Surprising how several other manufacturers (Tasca/Asuka, Dragon) have focused on the Rice's Red Devils tanks when there are so many other colourful choices from the Korean War (for example the tanks painted in yellow on the front of hull and turret, tiger stripes and aggressive mouth and eyes). That would be a welcome decal set (with the mouth and eyes at least) - I don't fancy my hand painting skills there.

On page 51 of the Squadron/Signal publication "Armor in Korea" there are two pictures of Rice's Red Devil vehicles, which look to have a considerably darker shade on the gun mantlet (and perhaps even the muzzle brake) which do not look like shadow, whereas the front armour of the tank looks to be in the same shade as the rest of the vehicle.

Could there have been several schemes used by this unit, for example with the mantlet/muzzle brake (perhaps even the whole barrel) painted in Red?

I kind of fancy building one with a Red mantlet/barrel/muzzle brake in that case, if indeed that scheme existed.

Never touched one and don't intend to start now. Took one look at how the HVSS went together and just said "no." Too many years of typing have sapped my manual dexterity to the point where assemblies like that are best avoided.

Would rather paint 54mm hussar braid.

Tamiya I can build and even eventually find for under $30 on Amazon.

They did. If Tamiya doesn't include it in the box, Star Decal makes a set and there is also a pre-cut mask set from Montex
