I know that there is no or very little love for the M114 APC, but it's still a small part of the Cold War American Armor history. They were deployed to several Active Duty Army units and deployed to units in Germany in the early 70s, including the 11th ACR.

I'm still hoping that a modern plastic/molded injected version with be made someday soon since "I" not a fan of resin kits since my skill level is very basic. This and several other American APCs from the 50s would be nice additions to any Cold War collection. "I" especially would like the basic version of the M114 simply armed with a .50 cal M2 and M60 machine guns.

The first time I saw a M114 was back in 1980 at Ft. Knox. As I was finishing up Basic/AIT training (19E), I was put on a range detail. I remember seeing Army civilians moving several brand new M114 APCs down range... I remember asking my Drill Sergeant why were they using them as tank gunnery targets since they were still new, inside and out... It was towards the end of our training cycle, so the Drill SGTs started to let their guards down and talked to us as regular "Joes." Anyway!! He said they were obsolete, but that he always liked them since he was first a Scout (19D) and that they were a lot faster than the M113s.

Talking about small obsolete APCs, I'm drawing a blank, but that small West German APC that was fielded before the Marder IFV entered service, would be a nice addition to any Cold War collection as well... IMHO!!

You have my vote!
It would be nice to have them in styrene even if there are resin kits ...

First time I saw them was on a range a Ft. Dix in 84. By then they had been shot full of holes so we added a few more.

I to would love to see the M114 in plastic, and the M58. Some companies have produced some odd ball stuff recently so fingers crossed.

If not its an Accurate Armour one that is nearly 30 years old.

For me it is the M114A1E1. The long barrel of the 20mm gave it a mean look.

The German thing was the
Hotchkiss Kurz.

Me too!

The only time I'd ever seen one was when they were used as berms at Graf.

I'd REALLY like to have a 1:1 version parked in my driveway!

Assigned to 1/50th Mech Inf, 2nd AD at Ft Hood, 1973-1978. We had M114s in the Scout platoon of the Combat Support Company (CSC), with a mix of .50 cal and the 20mm weapons, all with the M-60 for the observer at the rear hatch. They were hot rods compared to the M113s, but the 114s suffered from hydraulic leaks on a regular basis. Used a military version of the Chevrolet 283 ci gasoline engine.

I have the Accurate Armour 20mm version built on the shelf. Close to my first all-resin kit, so I had to deal with the resin track sections.....

I was very impressed with the resin hull shell (hull sides and roof in one piece), with all of the commo boxes and cables already molded in place on the interior walls. It still looks good even as I attempt to drop a desert MERC scheme on it to represent one of the 1-50th vehicles.

I contacted AA, asking if they could mold the cupola in a clear resin, so the vision blocks would also be clear, but was told it was not feasible. Sigh...

Yeah, plastic would be sweet.

I'd never heard of it until a co-worker told me he rode on one armed with the 20mm while stationed in Germany.

I was a platoon leader in 1/11 (Mech) Infantry, 4th ID (Mech), at Ft Carson in 1973/74. Each company had all M113A1s with one M114, supposedly for the company commander's use. But, as they were underpowered pieces of crap, it never left the motor pool. That small-block Chevy engine couldn't handle the workload. Parts were also difficult to come by. I remember the Motor Sargent running out to the off-post auto parts store and buying components to try and get it running. He did, for a short time, get it into a 'green' status. At that point we parked it and never moved it again. In 1974 they were all pulled from the TOE.

They did look cool, though - like a cut down M113 but with rubber-band tracks.

Ours just had a Ma-deuce mounted on the commander's hatch.

It would make an interesting model. A diorama showing it being towed by an M578 (typically used for M113 recovery at that time) would be most appropriate.

Ah, the M113-1/2, or the M113 C&R. Don't remember which version that Hobby Fan made, Canadian or Dutch.

They were used in Viet Nam for a very short time, pretty sure just with the A.R.V.N. though.

Thre's one parked outside a V.F.W. hall in Queens, think it's in M.E.R.D.C. camo.

We had one parked outside the messhall in Baumholder in the late 70s. Cool looking vehicle.

There were two parked in front of the Woodbridge armory. Amazingly they maintained their early 1970s 7th Army camouflage with huge black stars.

There used to be one parked outside the armory in Ludlow Vt. But it has been a few years since I drove that way having moved 30 miles north.

IMHO-- totally useless vehicle. I had them as a company commander and was lucky to get them out of the motor pool (Alpha Company, 2d Battalion, 41st Infantry 1971) Although, it did make a fine target when employed as the threat platoon for Tank Table VIII.....

That's the V.F.W. post in Bellrose. The M114 is on the Cross Island Parkway side of the building. It's painted in the MERDC scheme.

The small german APC/IFV (it was armed with a 20mm Hispano-Suzia Canon in the base version) was this one:

Schützenpanzer SPz 11-2 Kurz

Despite the name (that hints at an IFV) it is more a light scout vehicle carrying some dismounts. It's replacement was mainly the 8-wheeled Luchs

The "real" IFV of the time was this:

Schützenpanzer Lang HS.30

The main thing THAT beast was good for was a nice political scandal...

I had piles of Roco M114 and HS 30 as a kid.

When they cleared out the ranges on Fort Dix in the 1990s a few M114 vismod hard targets were found. They used to be driven around on ranges with the driver under having armor with training rounds used against them. They kind of resembled T-54 and one even had huge red stars on the turret.

The one I was thinking about was the Schützenpanzer "LANG," HS-30. When Revell of Germany came out with their Jadgpanzer Kanone, I thought that this would would have been a follow kit, using the Jadgpanzer kanone hull.

I too would love to see the M59 and the M75 APCs as well.
