Another wet and windy one here today, but every gale blown rain cloud has a silver lining, and today I managed to apply the first top coat of paint to my previously primed Sherman Firefly and Cromwell (see images below).





























There are a few bits of 'debris' that shows up under the camera that need removing, ...these are not visible to the MK I Eyeball, ! Also, the paint was still wet, so there is an excessive sheen that will hopefully 'dull' down as the paint dries. I'm not that good with the camera...I'm just a 'point-and-click' sort of fellow...so the colour is a little washed-out in the images above. The photographs were taken near a window and, again, to the MK I Eyeball it is a much 'greener' in reality, .

This is only the second time I've used an airbrush, so still a lot to learn regarding paint consistency and application. Tomorrow I'm going to try some lightening of areas using the airbrush, ...so images tomorrow might show the models at the bottom of a bin, .

Hi all,

Today I started to 'block out' the camouflage net and tarpaulin cover on the Sherman Firefly.

I have also started to add some tonal (think that's the word, ) variations to the paintwork (see images below).

















Still a lot of high and low lighting to do, I like my tanks to be well weathered, . I might even try some chipping, been reading about both the sponge and the hairspray method. Being a novice...or should that read coward, or perhaps both, ...I'm leaning towards the sponge method as it looks as if it might be slightly easier to do.

Beginning to look the part! It is just (could vert well be the lighting) that the colour looks rather bright, in the direction of emerald?

Thanks, as to colour it might be the artificial light, but it could also be down to me, I'm using this as a bit of an experimentation with colours, .

My thoughts are to get some real tonal variations and then pull it all together with a very light airbrushed coat of a suitable 'drab'...it might not work, but who knows, .

Hi Gareth,

All looking good; do remember that - assuming the remnants I worked with post War were not dissimilar - that the Hessian strips generally came in rolls of 2 colours - a green and a brown. That is not to say that some could not conceivably be made from torn up sandbags or similar, but I would imagine that the 2 x colours were then the order of the day.

I wouldn't go mad on chipping; these were mainly brand new issued vehicles and as there was plenty of time for maintenance, no self-respecting Troop Sergeant would let his vehicles get too shabby. A bit of wear and tear, but that's a different issue from weathering and mud of course.

Hi all,

A belated Happy New Year to one and all, it's been some few weeks since last I touched a kit. To be honest, the AFV Club Centurion Mk.3 was proving a challenge...not one for a novice like me, ...so I needed a break...before I broke the kit, .

So, I have decided to give the Centurion a rest, I shall return to it at some point in time, and do a little bit more work on the Tamiya Cromwell that I had been working on previously.

I have added some stowage and started to block-out the 'tarpaulin(s)' and other elements with a base colour. At the same time I have started to weather the vehicle itself (see images below).

Waiting for the snailmail from China for chunks to represent the ice. I do have some, but not enough China mail is not always trustworthy: sometimes it takes a week, but this time it is nearly 2 months en route :'(

The ice and snow products are already in stock, and so is Vallejo still water...
