Happy 2020 everyone! The Build a Photo campaign is now live!

Operational Overview
Have you ever seen a photograph and thought "That would make a great diorama!" Well, here's your chance. Though a dio isn't required, a copy of the photograph does need to be posted.

Any subject is welcome. It came be as simple or as complex as you like. One additional caveat is that all markings on the model need to be the same as in the photograph including bumper, hull and tail numbers.

The Rules and Regs
1. All scales
2. All eras
3. No previously started kits
4. Dios welcome
5. Aftermarket add-ons welcome
6. The photo of the subject you wish to reproduce must be posted in the campaign thread
7. At least two in-progress pictures posted in the campaign thread
8. At least two pictures of the completed model in the gallery

Contest Element
1

Post your thoughts, questions and in-progress pics here!

Kick off for the New Year with this Campaign I've been waiting for.
Hit the road with the RFM 5010 - Tiger I Middle Production w/full interior.
Opening Pandora's Box....

Using a Zimmerit set from ATAK and I'm still looking for a good metal barrel.
More later.....
I will post in this campaign thread, but also in a new to start build log for building the diorama setting.
Tiger will be a full build with some scratch work needed to bring it all up to comply with the photos:

The scratch work needed is to create a Pistol Port, the little bump you can see.

For more information when needed I will use several reference materials, will call them by name when so.
Hope everybody will enjoy this campaign as much as I already do.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone!

Here my entry into the build. Dragon's Kit 6866 Tiger I Mid-Production. I will only be building the Tiger and not the demolition vehicle.

Dragon must have used the photos of this Tiger taken in Italy which follows the movement of the Panzer Abteilung 508th. I found this photo in "Tiger I in Action 1942-1945" page 227. The decals match up with the tank and unit number and emblem. I will use this photo for the build.

This will be my first Tiger I build so this will be most interesting for me.

Here's my build. Kinda cool that the box art matches the photo as well.

@ Mark:
At first: Maybe you know already, but there is an issue with the wheels of this kit, http://tiger1.info/EN/Dragon-rubber-wheels.html
May come in handy when you get to that stage.
Second: Take a look at the photo you want to build. The Tiger has Steel Road Wheels and not the Rubber ones. Only Late build Tigers had them mounted. One should question if the photo shows a Mid Production Tiger or not? Does the book provide information on that? If so has the kit the extra Steel Road Wheels you need?
Sorry if this ruins your plans. Anyway, success with the build. I love that Tiger on the photo, good choice.

Thanks for the information as I really have not studied the photo that closely as of yet or look through the kit. There is another photo in the book with the Brits driving the same tank later, it appears the crew took off in a rush. I do have steel wheels available to change out. As much as the 508th moved around these could be replacement wheels. I will pull my Tiger for Modelers book out and compare the photos to see which model it maybe. I have see photos of Tigers with a mix of rubber and steel wheels late into the war. Thanks again for information

Well I found the metal barrel for the Panther, but then looking at the original photo, realised the engine deck is unseated and at an angle so will now also need an engine .... plus all the decent american figures in a trench coat appear to be out of stock...typical lol

John, you have found a good challenge for yourself 🙂 The front crew compartment hatch and the tool box at the rear are also open. Some of the tools are also out of the brackets.

Looking forward to see more of the project.

Thanks for that Jesper, even more pressure now lol... fingers crossed I will do it some sort of justice.
Looking forward to seeing your Sand shark come to life, that will be impressive.

Hello all.
I made a start with the build of the Tiger I
Engine - Cooling Fans - Fuel tanks - Transmission - Radio rack - Tracks (one finished, other still needs the horns.
Pretty nice and easy build so far. Parts have a good fit and almost no cleaning required. Some photos:

I try to follow David Byrden's Tweak List for the kit when it makes sense to me.

More to come when there is progress.

Kind regards,

Robert Jan

So here's the photo I'll be building:

Kit is Tamiya's Sheridan with Tamiya PE, Echelon decals (these need to be modified a bit) and two sets of ammo boxes by AFV Club.

Ammo racks from styrene strips, these shouldn't be a big issue. The kit has some crew members, and I can probably use driver (not visible, but I assume driver hatch is open) and one of the visible crew members. I'll need to buy two more, and build the base. I'm slightly worried how this will turn out. It will be most challenging build I'm planning to complete this year, but I'll never know if I don't try...

Kiwis actually Mark. Captured at La Romola, south of Florence, along with its sleepy crew.

Well, have started the tank destroyer campaign so its now time to begin cutting some plastic to get the Panther G rolling. Will start the lower hull and running gear with lots of attention to the rear plate as that will be the focal point. Pics to follow.

I have started nice and slowly with this one, attention to detail is going to be key with this build.
Fitted the final drives and the torsion bar type axles.Had to off set the rear 2 on the right hand side as last 2 wheels stations look slightly higher than the rest giving the track a slight lift.

Hopefully you can see that in the pic. Also did a basic assembly of the turret less all the small detailing and PE.

Also filled the not needed holes on the rear armour plate as this will be getting a lot of extra attention as its going to be the real area of focus...

John,

That is one long barrel even for a Panther.
