Use of Blacken-it???????

I recently purchased some "Blacken-it" to color the tracks of the Tamiya Wespe that I am working on. The tracks are made by Fruil. I want the tracks to be more of a black or gunmetal in appearance with a little bit of a rusty appearance to it.

Will this be best achieved by brushing it on or should I submerge the whole track in it?
