No pictures of the vehicle itself as of yet though I've already sprayed on the basecolor with some post-shading. I would just like to get some feedback regarding the tracks since this is my first armor kit.

I'm a bit concerned that there's too much rust. What about the shiny spots that have been worn out, should they be brighter?

In my opinion Druid, they look just right! Too often I've seen really bright silver paint used to dry brush. I prefer a rub with graphite. Unless the pics are way off, yours looks just like this..

Druid, if you're concerned your tracks look too rusty you could always tone them down/blend them in by overspraying a thin coat of "dust". Remember you need to simulate bright metal on the guide horns & where the road wheels run as well (after the overspray of course).

Cheers Vinnie! I used a pencil to rub those shiny spots and I believe the pictures are as accurate as I can take them. The rusty orange is a bit brighter than it is to the bare eye since those are rather well it extreme closeups (about 5 cm distance). Gotta love that new daylight lamp.

I am not a track expert by any means. To my eye, the orange is a little bright and little excessive if the tracks are on an "operational" vehicle. I think if you use some "dust" and rub a little more with some graphite or pencil on the "contact" areas it will look just fine.

Thanks for the further tips. Steve must have posted at the same time as I because I only saw Vinnie's post at first.

Sounds like I need to add some more dust. I tried to rub the guide horns with the pencil but obviously more effort is needed.

I used pigments for dust, maybe I'll try and spray a thin mix of some sandy color next.

They look very good. I wouldn't change anything, just blend them in once they are on the vehicle. A lot depends on the setting of the vehicle. Will it go in a diorama/vignette ? Don't make the guide horns and inside of the track to 'shiny' , if at all... the Pzr IV ran on rubber tyred wheels, which might have put a faint shine on the metal, but definitly not rubbed it to a 'mirror' finish..

Cheers

If you feel they are bit to orangy in color ,just use a burnt umber wash in the details and this should tone everything dowm a bit. You could even do this over the dust coat .

Now that I'm looking at the pictures on another monitor the rust is wayyyyy too bright, it's a heaps more toned down in reality.

Anyway since there have been some questions here's what I did:

Being an OOB build I used the vinyl kit tracks and primed them with some flat grey from a spray can. Then a base color of metallic silver mixed with flat black (more black than silver). Below is a picture of the tracks after that paint and some very careful application of rust pigments. On that white palette you can also see the mess of different colors I used:

Then I tried some light rust pigments but they ended up too bright and discrete so I washed the tracks with burnt umber oil paint and at some point I added some pigments to the mix. This worked rather well for the rust which was still too obvious. In the end I had a rusty and muddy "sludge" of colour which I applied like a wash.

After the wash had dried overnight I toned down the rust with some dust pigments (Mig Europe Dust) and finally rubbed the raised bits with a pencil to get that attrition sheen. I reckon a rather soft pencil or a block of graphite would work the best. I just used the first pencil I found which happened to be HB2 softness.

I got most of the ideas from following the excellent advice in this thread

Ya,

I think you are right...too much rust. I think a rust wash would have done you better. However the horns are right on. I however am not smart enough to post a picture of what I am talking about...sorry.

I am building the same kit.

Well thats not quite true as I built it months ago I just havn't painted it yet.

Your tracks look pretty good so far.

One thing I have noticed being around construction equipment is that if the vehicle is used regularly there isn't a whole lot of rust on the tracks.

Try some silver paint dry bush In the high parts of the tracks...
Don´t forget of the tracks weight...

Thank you for sharing...

They are the 'liquorice' tracks, out of the box.

Now that I've seen my photos on different viewing devices and then looked at them again I can say that they are definitely too bright when viewed on the computer. I can barely see the shiny bits with my bare eyes so maybe some drybrushing is needed and that's it.

After that I have to redo the photos.
