Hey this has nothign to do with modeling but it has something to do with AFV's, so if any of you have seen Kellies Heoro's, what the hell is wrong with the tiger, the wheels are wrong and the turret is to close to the front.

(++) Can someone tell me if this is a real tank please????

thank you

Looks "funny" because it is actually a Russian T-34 with lots of "make up"

Well, it used tobe. The chassis is a modified T-34 (I think, someone feel free to corect me)...that's why it looks "off". Though it does resemble the Porsche Tiger a bit, as far as the placement of the turret anyway. At least Hollywood made an attempt to make them look like Tigers and didn't paint Patton tanks grey and try to pass them off. It was the same Tiger used in Saving Private Ryan, well...same build design. Though as more and more WWII tanks are being restored, it would be cool if a movie director could borrow a few for a new flick...a Panther, Tiger, King Tiger...that would be cool. Mabye CGI them so they only need one or two real ones.

As far as I could verify I think it actually was a Tiger VK.4501 which has a chasis that does like like a T-34 and if my history knowledge is right, only one was actually put into service in the later part of the war when the germans deployed any tank they had. Someone correct me on this if Im wrong though please

Hehehe, it could be worse, in A Bridge Too Far (Fantastic movie it has to be said!!) some of the shermans you see there are actually Volkswagen Beetles with fibreglass shells over the top. They did a sterling job, you never once in the film can actually tell.

They had 5 real ones though, so fair play.

A bridge too far also featured Dutch Leopards pretending to be Panthers(?) and some AMX13-based SPs masquerading as StuGs. Not quite as successful as the Land Rover based Shermans

:-) how right you are. The axis armour had me baffled for a long time. Especially when that odd, panther-mantled thing rolls over Arnhem bridge.

It's still a fantastic movie IMO, one of my all-time favourites, just for the exciting mix of British stiff-upper-lip and stern fighting, and American gung-ho chivalry and the fearsome determination of the airborne. Shame the most amusing character (Colonel Bobby Stout) was fictitious !! That guy was awesome...

"Have you ever been liberated Colonel?"
"Well I've been divorced twice if that counts!"

good job I bought the "Bridge Too Far" special edition DVD - the second disc has some nice footage from the actual operation, I will be screen-grabbing this from my pc's dvd drive and using it for reference. It doesn't get much better than the actual footage

The PIAT which hits the Panther on the glacis was done for real (dummy bomb of course), and hit first shot.

I actually hope that the directors will not pursuade anyone to borrow their vehicles for movies. The directors and movie producers doesn't give a damn about original equipment, and I've read stories of people who have had everything from original BARs to original Shermans broken in movie sets.

well, watching the documentaries on the making of bridge too far, they actually pulled a tank off the top of a war memorial and got it running again for the film.

they got permission of course :-) but they still did it.

I don't know exactly how true that is, but I actually think it's much better that the real deal is being used as what else is it going to do - sit and rot !!!

The fellow at Planes of Fame has an excellant condition, running Sherman he has "loaned" to the Movie people a few times. much better than watching all those Chaffees running around pretending to be Shermans.

The problem is, that after they have been set on fire, they are more or less destroyed, and will either require restoration for millions of pounds, or sit alone being useless as references. Using them in movies is selfish.

you don't think they set the real thing on fire surely !?!?

A replica stuffed full of gubbins and petroleum would explode far more dramatically than the real thing, so they "Hollywood" up their effects by blowing those up - not the real thing.

I'm sure noone with a genuine and running WWII sherman would let even Spielberg blow it up!!!

or at least - I hope not :-)

They sure would set it on fire! One of the stories I heard involved a Sherman being covered completely with a type of resin, because it then made a larger fire when lit. This was without the knowledge of the owner of the Sherman, and the owner received no compensation (even though it was freshly restored, with a brand new paint job).

I doubt they will need to have origianl equipment anymore. Since Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers there are a few movie prop companies than specialize in fiberglass mocks. Of course they are not 100% authentic but you have to admire that they are attempting to go as authentic as practically possible.
