Hello to All,

Would like to get some information on 1/25th and 1/16th kits.

What kits are available in each scale? Specifically kits of WWII subjects.

I have a Panther G, Jagdpanther and T-34 in 1/25th. Would like to find a Sherman and Tiger in the same scale.

What WWII subjects are available in 1/16th? Any estimates on the costs of various static kits?

Thanks for any and all help in this matter.

Regards,

Joe

The lion share of 1/25 scale kits was produced by Tamiya in the early days and then most of them copied by Academy.

Tamiya did a Tiger I that was not accurate by today's standards, but was a hot item 30 years ago with a full interior, working suspension and engine detail. I last bought one when I returned from Desert Storm in 1991. It was aroud $50 back then and tend to go for some big bucks on eBay.

Tamiya also did a Centurion, but nothing US like a Sherman. in 1/25.

Bandai did an M60A1 in 1/24 scale and ITC did a T92 airborne tank (cancelled replacement for the M41 Bulldog). That's about it for US armor in large scale.

Hasegawa recently did three versions of the WW2 Willys Jeep. Great kits, one came with a .30 cal, one with a .50 cal and the third with a trailer.

1/16 has been a big item recently with both Tamiya and Trumpeter making some kits. Rather pricey though, but Tamiya does a couple of Tigers and a 105mm Sherman howitzer tank.

Yesterday, when I was posting a News story about some new decal sets in 1/16th scale, I spent a bit of time browsing the Backyard Armor Website (LINK) and I must admit I was amazed at the sheer volume of both kits and AM available. Not something i'd really consider, but if you have the space - Good Luck!!..Jim

Hey

Why don't you check the Large Scale Forum:

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewforum&forum_id=75&page=1

I was present at this meeting. The Pershing without any paint yet is my tank. Check this link, gives you a nice view of what's available in 1/15 and 1/16:

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/67299&page=1

Warning: once you start big scale you can't stop with it anymore.

Hey Jim (or Anyone),
Can you explain "full option" as it pertains to the Tamiya kits.
These seem to be the lowest priced kits. Are these the static models?
They have options listed which seem to indicate they can be made into R/C versions.
I'm more than a bit confused.

Joe

I am sure that Tamiya will re-release the Centurion and Tiger again, I'm hoping so anyway as my Centurion, half built was accidentally knocked off the table some years ago by my wife during housework, so I am looking for another.

Full option means that it has all the bells and whistles needed to have a fully functioning remote control tank (you must supply the 4 channel remote with receiver and batteries). I have the Tiger I full R/C version by Tamiya.

I also have the Tamiya King Tiger that is motorized (has the motorization gearbox) but is sold as a static model.

Tamiya is always cranking out the Tiger and Centurion kits every few years or so. There are plenty of them on the shelves here in Japan, particularly the Centurion.

I completely disagree. I have built all the 1/25 Tamiya kits except for the Chieftain, and I have built the Bandai 1/24 King Tiger. I have also had the chance to carefully examine built and unbuilt 1/24 Panther and M60 kits. They all have their problems with accuracy and detail, but the Tamiya kits are FAR FAR better than the Bandai kits, without question. Proportion, dimensions, detail, engineering, fit, overall quality...in all areas, the Bandai kits lag way behind the Tamiya kits. And with the Bandai kits being collectors items these days, they are usually ridiculously priced. Luckily, I bought my Bandai 1/24 KT about 10 years ago, for about 5,000 yen (about $43 USD).

Also, the 1/24 Bandai kits DO NOT include rubber road wheels or metal intake grills.
The interiors, however, are fairly decent.

I'm not really bagging on the Bandai kits, as I think they are actually pretty cool (wish I'd have picked up an M60 10 years ago, too!), but I thought it best to correct the previously posted misinformation.

Piotr, funny you should mention that, whn I was in Poland last august, I saw card models all over the place but particularly in Has-Hobby in Warsaw. The most impressive I saw was a 1/35th scale Vietnam Monitor.... Totally but interesting nevertheless...Jim

Hey Guys,
Basically the same response from the other board.
I appreciate everyone who has taken time to help out.
1/16th looks to be out of the question due to cost, and 1/25th isn't too bad, but I really wanted a Sherman for the collection. So, I'm not sure if I'll pursue 1/25th any farther than I have already.
The cardstock looks interesting, but since all I've worked in is plastic, I'm hesitant to start something entirely different.
Regards,
Joe

Finally found it.Read this thread earlier and knew I had seen something somewhere for M-60-A3.
Sol makes a 1/16 PzKpfw 38(t) in resin w/PE.Have only seen Squadron carry it(#SL3152).Looks like Sol also makes a couple of unique 1/16 troopers.
HTH cheers!

I woulden't give up that easily Joe. With some companies producing 1/25 p/e and a couple of recent offerings in 1/25 I think that some new stuff might be on the horizon. 1/25 is my favorite choice mostly for the ability to scratch build and detail the kits.
