Hi,

i think, both positions may be possible.

Found two photos with the above mentioned position here:

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Waffen/Bilderseiten/Unterbilder/8,8-cmFlak36.htm

And a photo of a FLAK 18 pointing forward here:

Karl -

Most 'operational use' situations and photos I've seen seem to indicate the gun faced back/away from SdKfz. But other photos with it stowed/travel lock used face toward SdKfz. My guess would be either could be used, but if in field or operational situation, I'd go with away. Here's another reference;

Don't know how helpful this has been.

Hi guys, off topic I know but I couldn't help but notice that in Stefan's second link ( http://www.ww2technik.de/sites/dflak/8,8%20cm%20flak%2018.htm ) There is a picture of an 88 mounted on a Panzer 4 chassis. Now is this an interesting idea for a build or what! so i'm thinking has anyone got any better reference pics of the AFV in question or any info etc. Was it a prototype or production vehicle or a field mod even? Perhaps a translation from the page would help but i'm definately after more pics if people have em please!

Cheers,

James

AFAIK it's a one-off on a converted tank hull with the fighting compartment armour removed, abandoned in Czechoslovakia at the end of the war. The text above the pic is mistaken and is referring to another vehicle.

The 8.8cm Flak 37 could be towed with the barrel facing either way. The earlier 8.8cm Flak 18 could ONLY be towed with its barrel forward as it was configured with different front and rear trailers whereas the Flak 36, 37 and 41 used two SdAnh 202 (which were interchangeable).

The 8.8cm Flak atop the Pz iV has been discussed previously. There seems to have at least been two as one is based on an ausf G chassis and another one clearly is an H or J chassis. Mike Rinaldi did a build up interpretation over on ML a while ago:
