Hello all.

Started out the new year building this and I guess i'm ready to show what progress I have made on it so far so here it is.. hope yall enjoy.

Ok I just Finished putting the final peices on and weathered it with Pastels.. here are the latest and final pictures of the dukw..

sorry about the large images but I like to show the detail of my work.

this was a pretty quick build for me..most likly my fastest build yet.. 23 days from start to finish. I may still putter around a bit and add cargo or such but it is finished.

Delbert,
Your DUKW's looking good. Nice camo. I haven't started mine yet.
I went to your site and checked out your pics from DC. They also have DUKW tours in Boston, I saw a pic somwhere.
Good looking model Buddy.

Del,

Like I told you in the chat room, you have done a great job on the DUKW and a good dusting work as well. And the camo pattern is real nice too.

Del,

Nice DUKW, I like the way it looked dusty.....very nice.

I have a question, besides amphibious, is this thing just a truck? Is there any armed version?

SS-74

Basicly its just a truck that happens to float, although i've read that 1 out of every 4 dukws was equiped with a ring mount and .50 cal.

That's a real good looking model !
What did you use for the big stars on the sides : decals, transfers or paint ? They are looking good despite the difficult relief !

They are the decals that come with the kit.. they settled down pretty good despite the difficult shape of the hull. I had to use several applications of Solveset on then to get them to snug down though. :-)

Nice job -- straight out of the box, right?

FYI, for those who might be planning to build one of these -- the little slots on the sides should be filled for a WWII vehicle. Delbert -- please don't take this as a rip on your outstanding work -- just a little nugget for the rivet counters, like me .

Man, I really need to get one or two or three of these ... I have a photo somewhere of two DUKWs lashed together and ferrying a P-38 Lighting from ship to shore.

Very nice work I love the overall dust and as stated the markings are great.
Question for any to answer - The Jerry can holders on the back deck, are they welded to the deck?

Del:

Like I've told you in the chat room, this is a nice model. You've really put a lot of work into it and hopefully you are proud of the results.

By the way, the build process would make a nice article for the Sty newsletter (hint, hint ).

ps: For giggles you should post one of your pics with the bird on it :-)

pps: Keep up the great work!

Yes this is a Straight out of the box Build as I wanted something fairly easy to start off my new year.

In no way do I take honest coments about my work as a "Rip" and you have raised an interesting point. I've been checking my References and cannot find any solid indication when the slots in the side were adopted or if they were retro-fitted onto existing dukw to solve a problem.

In the Squdron-Signal publication there are several pictures of Dukw's loading Equipment such as 105 mm guns.. that have the slots. but the only picture of a Dukw with slots that indicates what year is on page 8 the caption says "A Dukw with the early Rounded hull #3072555 with 3 man crew and equipment........"

I have also checked the web and found several restored Dukw's with slots that say what year they are.

These 2 link is to some 1945 restored dukws.

http://ux1.cts.eiu.edu/~csjdn/dukw.htm

http://my.voyager.net/~dukw/dukwpage.htm

and here is a link to a restored 1944 Dukw

http://users.belgacom.net/amphib/Dukw-pic.htm

I have also e-mailed a Dukw Restoration company and a couple of museums with this question.

Slogger.. here is a close up of the jerry can holders on the back deck.. I really cannot tell if they are welded or bolted on.. an my guess would prob be wrong.

WeWillHold.. ok you win.. just for giggles here is a picture of my Dukw.. I went to the kitchen for something to drink and when I came back it had been taken over by my wifes Cockatil...

I also hope to have the thing finished in a day or 2 so stay tuned for the final pics.

I have been debating whether or not to get my hands on a DUKW and put it together. After seeing the great job you've done so far, it's now a "no-brainer" for me! I gotta have one.
Outstanding work, sir!

Great Job! I like the camo work and the dusting you've done.

After seeing the great job you have done, I have added a dukw to my wishlist of models to look for in the future.

Del, this looks really good with the dusting on it. I'm going to have a go at dusting on my next model because of the inspiration from yours.

A quick question though, are the chalks put on "dry" or mixed with something first?, and how are they sealed afterwards.

Great model, think I'll have to have one too now.

Cheers

You are correct, sir.

Perhaps I popped off my answer before the coffee had taken full effect... What I MEANT to say was that the slots always seem to appear on DUKWs that have the tire inflation system installed. (In some photos it is very difficult to tell because of shadows, fender skirts, etc.)I bellieve that not all that have the tire inflation system have the slots, but all that have the slots have the tire inflation system. Italeri's kit does not have the tire inflation system, and, by my reckoning, should not have the slots.. (I'm re-reading this and hope it makes sense.)

At any rate, it seems to be a late modification. Maybe we can keep our collective eyes open and find a definitive refernce to answer this mystery.
