Indeed you can, although only the prototype would have had Zimmerit due to it being built on an old reworked chassis, all production models were built straight off the production line with apparently a Tiger I turret ring, a relocated radio-operators hatch and U shaped lifting rings on the corners of the front plate, as for camouflage the pic shows what I believe to be three colours in broad wavy bands.
Interesting.. A Tiger I turretring? My understanding is that 36 Ostwind variants were build using Pzr IV hulls ( conversions using tanks returned from the front for repair/overhaul) and only 7 on new production hulls. As the Ostwind was only an interim solution, untill the Kugelblitz could be produced, I find it unlikely that a special chassis, mating the Pzr IV with the Tiger I turret ring, would be created.
But for the purpose of this campaign, photographic evidence shows the Ostwind with and without Zimmerit, so go ahead.
Cheers
Henk

Thanks for the link Richard, some nice pictures there. What a pity that I can't read French, looks like a good discussion there...
Cheers

Found 3 more pictures of the Ostwind HERE
Not the best in town but better than nothing
Hey Sam, how's the kit? I saw it last weekend at my LHS and almost bought it. I'm not too much into rivet counting but more interested on how the assembly goes.
Richard:
so far so good. IŽve been enjoying it very much, pieces fit great and i haveŽnt used that much putty.
...and may the force be with you always...

Great!! That will be a good help to make some sort of camouflage on my beast. I am planning to do it without zimmerit, but have not decided yet. I might also use some artistic license and apply some numbers, letters or similar.

Wow, really nice work. That is bad news for the Thunderbolts and Mustangs at the Down Low Tank Busting campaign on Aeroscale. :-)

Well I finally found time to get into my den and clear some space to get to my desk so can finally make a start on my Mobelwagen, have taken a couple of pics of the main bits that will be used in this build, the Tamiya base kit, the Eduard etched set and an Armorscale barrel. I also have a set of Voyager fenders but I think they will wait for another project, I dont want to get bogged down with too much PE during my first campaign.
Inside the box....
Spread out parts..
And now, on with the building!

I'm pleased to see such helpful comments and photo links regarding the Ostwind. I'm building Hasegawa's 1/72nd scale Ostwind and I'll probably opt out of the zimmerit since I've never done "Z" and probably should practice on a larger scale model first. Your comments have already been a help.
Hopefully, here's a picture of the kit I'm going to build for this campaign:

How is the Tamiya Mobelwagen different from the CMK one? The CMK uses the Tamiya kit as a base... I'm confused
(I have the CMK kit, and it looks good. but what's the point?)

Hi Andras, the difference will be that the Tamiya one I'm building is a newer moulding with a lot of updated areas while the CMK one is based on the older 1970's Tamiya kit.

Sam
You'll find that Tamiya Extra Thin liquid cement dissolves acrylic paint (especially Tamiya) very effectively, meaning you can glue painted parts together without having to bother removing any paint.

I don't wish to ruin your day, but zimmerit was only applied on vertical surfaces, not horizontal ones.

Thank you for the answer. Is the wiberlwind based on the same old kit? (The Tamiya edition.) What is the difference between the two editions? (I know, it's less detailed, older, etc, but is there anything I should look out for? Are there any specific aftermarket stuff that are strongly recommended for the mobelwagen or the wiberlwind?)
Your help is much appreciated.

Your welcome, yes the Wirblewind is based on the same old mouldings, while the Academy version is a straight reproduction of the Tamiya kit. As for aftermarket bits for the Mobelwagen I cant recommend enough the Armorscale metal barrel, I'm also using eduards etched set which does replace a fair few of the more fine parts that dont reproduce well in plastic, fenders, hinges, gunshield and the spent shell mesh bin.

The Academy Wirbelwind is based on the old Tamiya kit (35085) and is really a poor copy.
The actual Tamiya Wirbelwind (kit 35233) is using the same old turret sprues but you have a more recent Pz IV hull. You can see a review with pic of the sprues
HERE Here in Canada you can have the Academy kit for $25CAN and the Tamiya kit for $55-$60CAN. That's why I bought the Academy kit. But you got what you paid for I suppose

CMK Mobelwagen looks fine to me. (I like that they gave multimedia parts with it.) If only I could find a metal shield for the wirbelwind

True as a general rule, but I think Henk is modelling the specific vehicle in the pictures I posted on page 4 of this tread. This Ostwind has zimmerit on the front horisontal superstructure.
