I got some time last night to work on the new Awards engine that will allow us to have more of the campaign ribbons and other awards everyone seems to love.
I do have one quandry I thought I would share and get feedback on. Here's the deal...
I have the new system working on the member profile pages. Click on my profile link below for an example.
My question is this: How much do users really want to see the awards on this page? As we add more awards and each user has different ones it will greatly add to the database load and page load of the forum. While the profile page obviously is only accessed if someone wants to find out more about a particular member.
So what say you? Performance over medals. Or medals at all cost?
Cheers,
Jim

Jim,
performance is definately an issue ! As far as I'm concerned, we move the medals etc. to the profile pages. I'd go for performance.

Perfomance over medals!!!!!
I like the idea that medals and ribbons are put in the profile screen, so I would like to make a suggestion on that.
Why don't you create a "symbol" for medal holders and a "symbol" for ribbon holders.
Then you can still see who owns a ribbon(s) or a medal(s) and by clicking on the profile (or symbols) you can find out wich awards that person has.
I hope that this makes any sence #:-)

Well I hope I don't get slagged by the Membership for my thoughts...
I'd vote for performance over medals everytime as this Site is only going to grow, grow, grow.
I really like the UOM Medal. That's special. I also like the intial run of Figure Campaign Ribbons - but I'd hasten to vote for a diluge of them to appear on the pages. Maybe they could appear in the Profile Page. Jan made a post with some samples that I really liked (the "piggie" ribbon cracked me up) - and maybe they could become special ribbons - one time albeit award - ribbons, instead of one for each group build we'll create in the future.

Jim ,
I never received a medal or ribbon but i think you've done a hell of a job to keep this site in working order so i recommend you for a special ribbon with an extra star !!!
keep up the good work

Ditto what Gunnie says. Put the medals/ribbons on the profile page, no need to have them platered wherever the person has posted.

Performance over medals is my overall vote. I agree with Gunnie - the UOM is special, and the Moderator is special also. I can see the campaign ribbons 'filling ones chest' quickly and the pages slowing down
Here are a couple of ideas
1. Have One basic award ribbon that shows up for campaign participation. This indicates that the member has at least one ribbon and you can click the profile to see what it is and what the others are.
2. Create a second sig line image - Users can cut and paste their ribbons into one jpg and have it displayed down there (With size limits of course). Just Blue Skying, Brain Storming - so the blue isn't bright and the storm is strong

Hi,
Performance above ribbons. I go with the idea of having only a general campaign ribbon at the posts and all others at the profile.
The ribbons at the sig line probably will have the same effect of slowing down the loading of the pages.
My 2 euro cents.

I vote for more medals and ribbons and post them on the profile page. To alter what has been said before, I think UOM is unique and important enough to go alongside our ranks in the posts, but everything else could be shifted to the profile page.

I'm new here and I don't have any medals so it's easy for me to say this but performance first please. I have a dial up modem; I don't need a slow site as well.
I definitely think that putting some kind of indication on the main board that somebody has a medal is a good idea. We can then go to the profile page to see what medal, or ribbon, they have.
To those of you who have earned medals and ribbons I hope this doesn't take anything away from your accomplishments.

My vote definately goes with performance. Medals are nice but fast page loads are much nicer.

Jim,
even I go for speed. I like the idea of having some form of clickable indication that refers to the profile page's medals or ribbons where applicable. If we want to show our purple heart or pink liver medals we can always paste those in our signature line.

Performance. When I first signed on I didn't have any idea what the rank or the medals even were. However, I did realize right away how friendly and helpful everyone was. Take my rank and camp. ribbon and stow it somewhere. I'll opt for performance everytime.

Performance first. Some kind of indication on the post that the poster has participated in a build campaign. UOM and moderator insignia to stay with post.
My 2˘ worth.

Yeppers, medals and ribbons to the profile page, with an indication that there is something worth looking up in that persons profile. UOM to stay on main page.
I don't have a ribbon yet, but when I get one I will be proud to wear it.

Performance and participation are the two things that will help the site grow. Just go with the UOM and an indicator of awards on the profile page. Seems fairly unanimous so far.

Jim,
from what I read, I think you have an absolute "GO" on the performance side.
Maybe we should keep the UOM award in the posts itself since it is highly appreciated by many of us.
