Think a mobile microwave unit. It projects a beam of energy to cause non-deadly pain in the form of heat on individuals, used to disperse crowds. Turn the unit off and nothing happens unlike tear gas, which will drift with the wind or linger in the area.

It delivers a concentrated microwave energy beam at a human target.

The beam penetrates to a depth of 1/64th of an inch and elevates the skin temperature to 130 degrees F creating the sensation of being on fire.

122d F is the temp at which a human reflexively retracts away from a heat source. The effect causes a combatant to immediately drop all hand held weapons while they "freak out" over being "on fire".

The weapon system is expected to be operational by 2010 and all branches of the U.S. military have expressed an interest in it.

What the news release didn't mention was how bad a sunburn it leaves the target with after it's over.

I tested out a small scale test model (about the size of a pencil) at the USAF Assoc. conference in DC in SEP. It creates the felling of a match head being placed on your skin. Quite unpleasant. No permanent damage at all though. Great for crowd control. They had a model of the HMMWV mounted version there on the table too.

Yep. ASD. They have been working on these systems since the 70s and they are developing the "lethal" versions along side the non-lethal ones.
Pretty impressive stuff really. In theory they should be able to take out missles and other threats as well.

It was in the local print news today, too. Apparently they've fired it at people some 10,000 times so far, with medical care being required in zero cases. That's a pretty good rate when compared to other "nonlethals"

The REAL question is which we'll get first, the actual weapon or a model of that Hummvee.

Several applications immediately come to mind:

1) Mass-marshmallow melting

2) Industrial quantities of toast being provided during riots

3) A GREAT (if expensive) way to heat up a battalion's worth of MREs...

On a serious note, what is the fash-point of gasoline? Wouldn't this, in an urban environment, have a tendency to kinda ignite gas-tanks? On the other hand igniting molotov cocktails in the hands of rioters COULD be an unexpected benefit... :-)

Amazes me that no one is shouting that you are discussing national security issues as was the case with Frenchy's pictures of the Warlock system. I assume this is not viewed as an OPSEC violation as many thought the earlier item was...both are on the internet. I guess they are still busy calling the FBI over the last item. Loose lips sink ships.

Well, every major news organization on the planet was broadcasting the images yesterday. The (test) images looked a hell of a lot like 'official' DoD footage...

I didn't see the last thread as bordering on an OPSEC violation either. All open source data was presented. Additionally, if Al Quada/Exremist Islamic Operatives/ Badguy Terrorists are surfing Armorama for data, we are succedding in our efforts and they are stretching pretty far. :-) :-)

I agree. If Al-Quada is in here on this forum they are under pressure. This is common knowledge. I saw that is was shown on BBC world. Some journalists even tried to be fried and they did not like it

These weapons systems are covered in widely-distributed magazines available in the bookstore, sometimes even before the defense magazines report on them.

I think a larger concern would not be knowing about them, but keeping track of them and under "lock and key."

As I noted earlier, the OPSEC boys were very concerned that I compromised our National Security by deriving information from the internet. I guess they are all burned out from the running gun battle the other day. Chat on.

Of couse, to look at this somewhat 'laterally' isn't there the possibility of a slight whiff of PsyOps in all of this as well?

When the message sinks in, every TV van with a satellite uplink is going to be looked at suspiciously...

However, this is not as bizarre as one may think. When the Anti-Nuke protests of the 1980s were taking place in Europe, one particular concentration of the 'Great Unwashed' was camped outside the U.S.A.F base at Greenham Common in the south of England. There were repeated claims that the protesters (claimed by the protesters naturally enough) were getting 'zapped' by microwave transmitters. Undoubtedly an urban legend, but no doubt a few of the madder 'theorists' will be claiming this was a trial run...

You betcha there's a PsyOps side to the press releases!

It's hilarious now to look back at the liberals who labeled Reagan a madman and dubbed his SDI program as "Star Wars".

His name wasn't Ronald "Raygun" for nuthin ya know!

Jim-- Obviously, the internet enhances our ability to find information quickly. The challenge is to ensure that someone does not inadvertently post something that could cause a problem. For example, I have often thought that Gino was some kinda spy or member of the communist party in America. His models were too perfect and had the tell tale marks of a man who knew too much. Then, I discovered he really is an artillery Officer at the Air War College and my heightened state of emergency diminished. I looked him up on the intenet. People are curious and we are all big boys who can pretty well determine when we should speak and when we should not. That the uproar over the earlier post is not displayed here is a positive sign that we are continuing to learn and interact as a group. Maybe I will revisit the Frenchy post. I deleted my contributions following the ludicrous gun fight.
