Dragon continues its popular focus on Israeli vehicles in its 1/35 scale plastic kit range. This time it’s the Magach 5 as used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
This particular kit depicts a Magach 5 fitted with explosive reactive armor (ERA) plus a front-mounted mine roller assembly. The Magach 5 was based on the M48A5 tank which Israel received about 150 M48A5s n the late 1970s and they were eventually fitted with Blazer ERA. The mine roller assembly fitted onto the front of the tank, and the rollers would detonate mines through their own weight exerting pressure on the ground. Thus equipped, such an AFV could negotiate a minefield or proof a route, with the heavy mine rollers preventing any damage to the tank itself.

Huge enthusiasm for this kit is expected for this Magach 5 with full ERA suite, plus the enormous bonus of the set of mine rollers too. Mounted on the hull front, the two arms supporting five heavy rollers are beautifully replicated, with details such as weld seams all true to scale.

Additionally, there’s a generous selection of photo-etched parts for delicate elements such as tool brackets and tow cable brackets, plus the tank uses one-piece tracks made from DS for added convenience.

The 105mm main gun’s weatherproof mantlet cover is also made from DS to ensure maximum realism.

Besides the mine roller, did Dragon ACTUALLY change anything on the base kit to warrant the Magach "5" moniker, like the correct engine deck configuration?

The Magach 5 is the same as a M48A5 We are talking about Dragon you know they will screw it up I can only imagine how bad Dragon will screw up their long awaited M48 AVLB

It seams like just yesterday Dragon was king. As soon as they decided to go in a new direction, they gave up on accuracy. Too bad, I have a soft spot for IDF engineers. Dragon, please fund research into a BAZ?.

Any reviews concerning Dragon's offering? Does it worth dealing with it?

Nope it is not worth it. The mine roller even is the US one and has never been used by the IDF.

I acquired one cheap for $28 and intend to part it out for two other projects. 1) While the mine roller is the incorrect type for an IDF tank, it is correct for an Abrams or M60A1 ODS USMC build. I'll be marrying up the roller to the Takom M60A1 kit. The roller push beam mounts will work on an M60A1. The rest of the mounting hardware is there and can be mounted with very little scratch building. 2) The entire lower A5 hull will be used on a Tamiya Sgt. York kit bash. That will require a fair bit of scratch building in the engine deck area. Another option would be to build it as a plain M48A5 since it has all the bits in the kit for that as well.

You might want to try and find the Eduard pe set for making the engine deck. It will fit the Dragon kit with some dry fitting and a little modification of the parts.
