Derived from the GT-SM tracked vehicle, the GT-MU was developed at the Gorkowski Awtomobilny Sawod, as a response to the need for a small, light, but armored all-terrain transport vehicle for the airborne troops. Crewed by two, it featured 6mm armor plating, torsion bar suspension, a 4-cylinder petrol engine, and had an operating radius of 500km on roads.
