The end of an icon of modeling. Recently, a model vendor gave me an announcement from Testors with troubling news.
The announcement from Testors, dated 1 April 2019, shows some 250 items will be discontinued.

I contacted Testors and their reply follows:
The product line that has been discontinued is the Model Masters International Military & Figure Enamels. This was due to a lack of support in the marketplace. (Emphasis added.) If you have any additional questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

I was told this discontinued items include their Aztek airbrushes. Testors did not address that but in a related letter Testors stated that I can send in my Aztek for a tuneup. Clarification has been requested.

Its another reason I got out of the hobby. When they discontinued Floquil years ago, I knew then the end was in sight. I tried acrylics every brand of them and they just dont compare to enamels.I loved Floquil mixed my own colors and I really loved their grey primer.I also used model masters, but it seems that the industry has gone "tree hugging environmentalist crazy" but aside from discontinuing the paints I used for years, the hobby just got really expensive, now they would make me invest in a totally new paint..not going to happen....have fond memories of my modeling days...wonder what the environmentalist will go after next...hmmmm..plastic itself... dont rule it out...

"The hobby of plastic model building is known to cause cancer in the state of California " I still use the floquil lacquers for painting vinyl tracks. There are lacquers out there. Even Tamiya has a line now. The Testors acrylic line isn't going anywhere and I've used and like them. And as far as enamels, Humbrol isn't going anywhere. They're the major paint I still use. And I'm stuck brush painting since I have no place to spray except my deck. And it's no good for an airbrush, only the occasional coat of primer and gloss paint for a car kit.

The Model Masters US Military Enamels (ie. FS Number colors and basic colors) aren't going anywhere either. They are just downsizing and getting rid of the International Military & Figure Enamels which were the RAL numbers and other foreign paints. So no loss for me as I build mainly US subjects.

I gave up on Testors Model Master years ago, both the enamels and acrylics. Practically every hobby shop sells them. I gave up on them because of their poor shelf life and viscosity. They dried too quickly in the bottle and I found them to be either too thick or too thin. Stirring with a toothpick or two couldn't get the paint mixed properly. The little paper disc inside did little to seal the paint airtight for years so opening it again was a gunky mess with separated colors. Furthermore, the opening was too large so a few paint bottles tipped and spilled onto my newspaper desk when opened. I just threw them away after I found the joy of acrylics in eyedropper bottles which can last for years without spilling or drying out. I found out that I was wasting money buying Testors jars. The tiny Testors glass bottles sold at drug and craft stores here in the USA used to cost fifty cents and now cost close to two dollars or more. Wow...for colors that hardly anyone uses. I do use Testors spray cans though, but like many, I practically gave up on enamels and stinky thinner.

I miss the Pactra line that they killed off. Those were good paints for brushing.

This is old news, I believe they cut the MMII line back in 2017. I've been trying to get away from MM enamels, but I just can't let them go. I've stocked up on the MMII enamels that I need, so I'm probably good for a few years. After that, I'll transition over to Mr. Color since their FS/RLM color lineup is extensive. I also have a ton of AK real color and Ammo paints to fill in the gaps.

This is terrible news and I can't help but see the beginning of the end as the manufacturers shift the market from what WE want to what THEY want to offer. I own a couple Aztecs and rater like them and I came to appreciate MM's huge spectrum of colours; not for me to mix a batch of RAL colours each time I needed them and I loved the way that their enamels flowed and I always used them as a base coat with an acrylic camo top-coat that I could weather. Wonder if they'll even acknowledge the bump in business as we all rush out to quickly buy more before it's gone?

I miss the Pactra line that they killed off. Those were good paints for brushing.[/quote] Pactra was indeed really good. Their Flat Black really was FLAT and the dullest flat black I ever brushed with. Whereas other Flat Blacks were like paint black (like the black on this website), Pactra's Flat Black was like construction paper flat black---no sheen or relfection whatsoever. I never did find anything duller than Pactra's Flat Black.
