Introduction

There are certain complaints that are regularly levelled at kit and figure manufacturers whenever a new product is released, and that complaint is “why didn’t they supply gun X with this product” or “why is there only 1 of gun X as I wanted two”. Well Dragon have a number of weapons sets on the market which I believed had gone out of production, however they seem to be turning up for sale on a regular basis now which I believe means they are being produced again in limited numbers. In this review I will be taking a look at the Modern Infantry Fire Support Weapons set in 1/35th scale, and while not as modern as once they were they are a handy item to have at your disposal.

Contents

Inside the typical end opening box you will find three light grey sprues with two being identical, there is also some construction required with this product with the instructions being on the back of the box.

Review

Have you ever wanted a Mk19 automatic grenade launcher, pump action shotgun or one of the hand held anti tank missile systems? Well this product from Dragon will give you that and some other options as well, just take a look at the pictures in this review. Starting with the quality of the product, in general I would say it is fair despite the age, and some of the detail is a little soft but not overly so.

Problem areas such as flash are surprisingly light but there is some present in certain places with the obvious mould seems needing a clean up, sink marks are none existent as far as I can tell which is another plus in its favour. These are obviously not up to the Gen 2 quality of product from Dragon but are none the less worthy of your consideration. Each of the weapons will need to have the barrel drilled out but otherwise a very limited amount of work will be required to make this product an eye catching addition to your work.

The biggest negative of this product is that the location of some of the moulding nipples may cause problems during cleanup as some encompass rounded detail, so take care when working on these weapons. You get two of each weapon type which should satisfy most in terms of value for money.

Conclusion

With the exception of some resin items hitting the market this is a very good product to get your hands, and when used in conjunction with other sets in the series provides more fire power options than an Arnold Schwarzenegger film. The inclusion of the pump action shotgun, four types of hand fired missiles, and the Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher mark this product out to me as one to purchase.
SUMMARY
Highs: The pump action shotgun, four types of hand fired missiles, and the Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher make this product one I had to purchase.
Lows: Some flash and poorly located flow nipples which detract from this product but not overly so.
Verdict: I cannot recommend this product highly enough as I believe you may hate yourself for not buying it when you saw it.

If I'm correct, the M2, Mk19, M16A2, M249, and M60E3 were seen in Iraq in 2003. How about the other weapons? Thanks in advance. Tim

Can probably add the M870 to your list there, Tim. Good review, thanks. Another kit I've been looking at lately too, I'm liking all the reviews of the Dragon Quartermaster series this past week.

SMAW and the LAW's as well as the AT4. The 249 was used, but its my understanding without that older pattern stock.

That SAW is pretty useless for an M249. Now as a NATO ally's Minimi you might have something. Stock is wrong, feed tray cover is old type but was still around a little bit by then, and flash suppressor is wrong.

I am happy you like the review. Despite the question mark over the odd included item I think this set is one of DMLs best offerings for the modern figure and vehicle modeller/diorama builder. You also cannot knock it over price in these days of shrinking budgets.

DML's is basically the only plastic offering for a very long time. And for a very long time I've been asking DML to update this set. I sure hope DML still does plan to update this set. I think the first time it was sold out and now DML reissued this set, which goes to show that these DML Weapons Sets are successful, I'm assuming. I bet a lot of other companies have based their figures, PE, and resin AM on DML's Weapons Sets.

I know the Army doesnt use the Remington 870. we've used the WInchester 1200/1300 with heatshield/bayonet mount and the Mossberg 500/590. the Saw would be good for a 1988 diorama but the stock hasnt been used since 94 even in the Guard. theres no barrel heatshield and the old barrel handle and flash suppressor, feed cover'' Theres no M240 which limits this kit to USMC desert storm timeframe basically and frankly the mould nibs are always on the worst thinnest parts of the barrels making trimming them to be presentable a hit and miss. IMO this set isnt much better than the Tamiya WWII US weapoms set which is horrible. Dragon would be better off with a gen 2 set with M240B's M249's fixed stock long barrel and telescope stock, short barrel. M14 SDM rig Mossberg Shotgun M500 with pistol grip breaching stock
