Ok situation rescued
I took the Italeri tracks out of the LVT-A4 kit I have, and I've managed to fit them
The base coat of flat earth is on the tracks and I will apply steel highlights to the cleats on the section hidden under the upper hull - I'll then be able to glue the upper hull on permanently
Heavy weathering and detail painting of the tracks will be done at the end of this build.
I think the hardest part of this project is finished, the upper hull, 'tail gate' and details look fairly stright forward.
Here is where I'm at :
The crew still look quite unhappy
Cheers

David Harpers "Project: LVT's" series of books are an awesome reference for those building LVT's
The pictures, references, colors, and weathering are very handy regardless of which version you're doing.
I'm using the one below to get the feel for the colors and weathering of the LVT's in the field. The models in the book are outstanding !!
Cheers

Paul,
Your LVT-4 is looking good and the figures look great. I built that kit for this campaign as well and had trouble with the treads on this kit too. looking forward to seeing it completed.
Prost,
Sal

Thanks Sal
The LVT will look VERY different when finished, I'll be using a lot of 'oils' on the hull and interior for streaking and weathering.
There will also be dusty areas from the sand (Mig Pigments 'Beach Sand', 'Light Dust', and 'Gulf War Sand') on the hull and tracks.
I will be giving the tracks several dark washes to tone the 'Brown' down and bring out the details, and then I'll add metalic 'steel' colors to the cleats and other areas that come in contact with the sand - then the dust / sand will go on
Cheers

Paul, the figures are excellent! How did you get the worn appearance on top of their helmets?
Will you be posting some in progress shots of your weathering techniques, especially with oils? I've started using oils, but I'm still learning and haven't really found anything I'm comfortable with yet.
Thanks!
Michael

Hi Bob Card , Sal and mates , I'm back home from work and looking to finish my LVT 4 before returning to the north .
Paul P your figures look increadible , great painting mate . I'll look for that Zaloga reference book in Perth today .
Bob Card the LVT 4 that I'm doing is strictly an OOB build as this coincides with an Italeri OOB build challenge at my local model club which must be finished by 1st August .
Bob or Sal do you have any reference for LVT's using the square gunshield as supplied in the kit ?
Obviously I am running out of time and therefore would appreciate help in getting the markings of a specific machine with square gunshields or no gunshields .

G'day Brian,
Bob has posted some images for me - they include machines with the flat shields - page 15 has one or two:
http://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/146775&page=15 .
Hope to have the upper hull glued on the lower tonight.
Cheers

Brian,
Besides the pictures that Paul referred to the only other 1's I saw was in a set of encyclopedias that I have called the Illustrated History of World War II. Also I saw many in the hours of YouTube video that I watched. This video show the flat armor on an Army LVT-4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHbfiwyTH_w
Hope that helps.
Sal

I've done a little bit of work on the tracks, Gunze "Burnt Iron" on the track 'Cleats' and a couple of Dark washes.
I'll do another dark wash, and then add silver to the very edges of the 'Cleats', after that I'll be able to move on to finishing assembly
Here's a progress pic to show where the tracks are at :
It's almost a shame I'll have to put a fair bit of sand on them
Cheers

Hi mates , thanks Paul and Sal for the help . It's been raining hard all day here so between domestic duties I have been doing research and I like the look of this one .
It has unshielded .50 cals mounted on the sides and the call sign B 8 .
Judging by the camo helmet covers of the troops are U.S. marines .
I'm guesssing the colour of the LVT would be olive drab ?
Are there any more photos of this machine that anyone knows of ?
Thanks for your help .

I'm going to assemble and paint the rest of the LVT less the 'seats' which I'm going to paint outside of that and install later.
This is so I can get the color right.
What color should they be ? Wood ? Or Blue as per basecoat ?
I'd be nice to do them 'wood' with some 'wear' to get some nice contrasting oolors into the build.
Any tips are much appreciated
Cheers

Hi Bob and everyone
I'm scratch building the LVT "Doodlebug" ramp carrier used in Tinian landings.
Since I joined I have done a few changes on it but no chance for picture updates on my web page. http://community.webshots.com/user/scratchbuilder
To everyone doing the LVT-4, the benches that are in the Italeri kit is wrong for WW2. These where a post war addition done by the French in their Indo-China conflict. Check the TM, WW2 pictures and the articles and books by David Harper and Bruce Crosby.
Bob, I'm sorry that i did not participate that much but I have to drop out of this Campaign due to major home renovation a work accident that happened a few months back and family time.
Happy modeling to everyone,
Ralph

I wonder whether I should leave the benches out all together then ?

I've just checked my Toadmans CD on this and there are no benches in those csrgo compartment pictures
It seems like they SHOULD be left out !
I have seen SO many of these built with the benches included !!!

Paul, great job on those figures and the camo looks great. Just love those LVT tracks. David put out books on all the LVT’s and I have mine worn out so I had to scan them before I totally ruined them. No seat that was a later luxury item, everyone had to stand and hang on.
Brian, those pics that Paul referenced are the best ones I could find, maybe someone else has some of those square shields?
Ralph, Doodle Bug is one of the best scratchbuilds to do; I don’t believe I have ever seen one built. I looked over your photos the details are fantastic. If you ever get a chance to finish it please remember to let us know. Good luck on the renovations!
I am happy to announce I am just about completely done. I took my last set of photos and am looking them over for items I need to fix, if I can’t find any I believe I may be the next official completer.
Let me know if anyone sees something I need to fix,
Thanks guys, looking forward to some more updates,
Bob

Looking Good Bob !
Love those palm trees
I've finished assembly and now I need to putty up those bench holes, and then apply the rest of the base coat.
My next question is about Camo appliation to Horizontal surfaces. I can't find ANY pics of LVT's with Camo paint of ANY type applied to Horizontal surfaces (only Vertical ie: hull sidea, superstructure sides, vehicle rear end, and vehicle front end).
Any ideas, thoughts ? Were the flat upper surfaces left plain ? (in this case "Blue").
Cheers

Bob, great job. I love how everything came together. It looks great. I wish there were more aftermarket options for Japanese armor, to allow some extra detailing, but yours really looks the part. I like the camo on the Marines as well. It's a winner.
Since I did a build review of this, I figured I would finish it off. The Type 1 never officially left Japan, although some sources state there may have been a few at Leyte. This tank is not too worn as it never saw any hard overseas service. I'm guessing the crew tried to keep it up as a morale booster to the local folks. I followed the camo pattern in the instructions and box art as well as I could.
I love all the LVT talk and images. I always wanted to do one but the tracks have kept me away. Paul, your's looks very nice. Keep up the good work. I'm off to the Sherman Campaign.

Hi everyone
Paul, your model is looking great. depending on what time frame and how detailed you are modeling, there where many changes on the LVT,s. The two try-angle protruding past the ramp where not on the early models.
Bob, thank you for the compliment. I will try and take new pictures of the changes that I made and post them. If I get a chance after my renovation I'm going to scratch build a new Doodlebug as per the description I found on the net.
Happy modeling,
Ralph

Hi all!
Jeezuz, Paul, those figures really are a treat! You're using acrylics, right? What brand? How do you do this? Questions...
Bob, congrats, that is a really awesome Dio. Wonder where you store all these treasures. Thinkin' of your windmill and the palmtrees it must be a huge locker!
Will be updating soon. Dug bushmaster in yesterday but haven't taken pics yet...
Greetings...

Whoa. That was fast. And really nice, too!!! I must say I'm a little intimidated by japanese armour, as theres not much a kit sticker like me can do when something 's wrong.. So much for the aftermarket.
Really loking forward to seeing you there, thats my next stop too!! My E2 is on the way over the big pool. Now if i could only source some decals...
