Hi all!

Jeezuz, Paul, those figures really are a treat! You're using acrylics, right? What brand? How do you do this? Questions...

Bob, congrats, that is a really awesome Dio. Wonder where you store all these treasures. Thinkin' of your windmill and the palmtrees it must be a huge locker!

Will be updating soon. Dug bushmaster in yesterday but haven't taken pics yet...

I've applied the Blue base coat to the rest of the LVT.

I need to attach the cables to the ramp and paint those next.

The next step after that will be the application of the buff Camo to the remaining vertical surfaces

Has anyone got an answer on whether they believe the Buff Camo should also be applied to the horizontal surfaces ?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Cheers

YEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! I did it, i did it, yesyesyesyes!!!!

Ok. Sorry. Hrrmmhrmmmm...ahem... lost my composure there for a 'ment.

Well, Bob, all men on board, I'm done. Uploaded my pics in the gallery.

Here's one that isn't in there:

And another one:

This is my firstt Dio ever. I had it pictured differently in my mind, but I kind of like the way it turned out.

So: been a hell of a lot of fun. I'm off to the sherman campaign. I really do hope to see you all there.

Thank you so really really much!!!!
And promised: I'll put antennae on my upcoming jumbo. The dio almost didn't fit in my cupboard the way it is....

Hi mates , well I've gotta call this one finished , I'm back at work in the north west til mid August .
Bob Card I've shamelessly followed your weathering of the alligator with MIG pigments and thrown some stowage in the back , photos below ;

So now I've just got to figure out how to upload to the gallery .

Paul,
Sorry for the delay. Camo would be everywhere but the top, except for the flat raised surfaces that is seen. But the roof, I don't think I have ever seen a photo for that. I even have a photo or 2 of camo painted as far under as they could reach. The top is really weathered and faded, most salt water would just sit there longer and be baked right in. A good example would be the Hawii Tank Yard photo from Hardcorpsmodels, if you want to purchase one I'm sure he still has some. I can probably scan a close up of the LVT's later so you can see what I mean. I'll have a better chance tomorrow.

Just running through my photos the only camo I could find that showed the camo painted like a tank was on on the LVT (A) 4's at Iwo, but I'll keep looking,

Wow am I behind, where to start;
First thanks for all the comments.
Russ,
Nice type 1, great camo and weathering.

Leo,
What can I say, just a great job all around, excellent Composite and just an exceptional diorama. First one, well the best first one I’ve ever seen, excellent job.

Brian,
Excellent LVT and for OOB very well done. Like the weathering, How did you do the weathering on the stowage? Very nicely done.

Paul, excellent job on the figures. Now about that camo. I cannot find any photo that shows camo on the horizontal surface of an LVT4. That being said, on LVT 2’s I have, it might be that there just are not very many overhead views available. I would go ahead and do everything, I wouldn’t think they would stop and try to match by eye the cab camo. I guess it’s your choice.

So far the completion status
1st. David Carlson CALLSIGN: TheDiggs, USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (DE 413)
2nd. Thomas F. Sweeney, CALLSIGN: tsweeney, Diorama Tarawa Marines at the wall
3rd. Sal CALLSIGN: ltb073, LVT 4 Saipan
4th. Russ Callsign: russamotto, Margaret, Diorama Saipan and Hellcat, Pacific Operations
5th, Michael Armbrister: Callsign; mopnglo, Colorado Diorama, Tarawa
6th, Thomo Thomson, Callsign: thomokiwi, Type 97
7th, Leo, Callsign: Rebilda, Bushmaster Diorama “Stuck”
8th, Brian Bullock Callsign: bpunchy, LVT 4
9th, Bob Card, Callsign: same, Guam Diorama
Close to completion;
Grant Voakes, CALLSIGN: GVoakes, to finish just pick one of the models submitted in the gallery and select the reference for it.
44 enlisted

Remember to post your finished photos in the gallery everyone.Gallery

Thanks for all the comments and I hope we have a bunch still trying to finish up.

Russ, I really like your camo! What did you use to layout your patterns?

Leo, very nice! I love how you finished it, and the brass plate is a very nice touch! I know what you mean about the final result not being what you pictured. That's always how it happens with my builds too. I kind of go with the flow. It really worked for you, because it looks great!

Brain, another nice LVT! What color Mig pigment did you use?

Bob, looking at the photos you posted in the gallery, I really think your dio would look great with a background. Have you ever added a digital background to your dioramas/models?

Hi Bob Card and mates , Thanks for the comments , well the stowage is mainly weathered with pin washes using "Games Workshop " acrylic paints as we cant get Future here and I've had bad experiences with oil washes eating my paint .
Also I use a filter of about 95% thinners and 5% Buff from Tamiya to tone down the bright colours .
The MIG pigment is "desert sand " mixed with Games Workshop washes to break up the surface tension and make it stick to the enamel paints underneath .
Thanks .

Michael, I just freehanded the camo pattern. That's how it was done in the SBS guide I reviewed so I thought I would give it a try. Thanks all for the comments. Leo and Brian, very nice looking work. This has been a great campaign with some beautiful workmanship demonstrated here.

@Michael: Thanks, Michael, usually I'm not that happy with the difference between intention and outcome I'm really afraid to say. But for me the journey is the reason to build, the finished model is mostly just the reminder of the adventure...Over time I then grow to like my models in a way. Have to work on that.
As it was a lot of firsts I treated myself to the brass plate - and it wasn't that expensive on the net anyhow.

@Paul: Not that I'm the one to tell but the way you lead the campaign is how a newby thinks of a campaignleader. I started late in the game but reread every page of log. So my plea: do it again! Someday, somewhen, as soon as you're rested! I'll sign up no mater what!

@everyone: thanks for all the kind words and encouragement, technical detail, reference and pics! as somebody said: this is addictive, so I hope to see you all around soon on some other campaign!!

Great dio, Leo. It looks very realistic and the bogged down Sherman sits "naturally" in the mud. Well done!

I have started my entry for this campaign. A little late, but real life has interfered a bit. My entry will be the DML Sherman Tarawa. I will build it as a D company tank as these are most colourful and looks best with an overall Olive drab paint job.

I have actually moved on since these pictures were taken, so more to follow shortly.

Paul, I don't know if this helps, but it is from Iwo Jima, LVT 2 or 4, I can't tell. Camo painted on the upper surfaces. There were a few more like this, but they were hard to see clearly. They match the LVT A4s used there.

Jesper,
Glad to see you have started, looking forward to the updates.

Russ,
Great photo, I have not seen any from earlier campaigns, but if you have let me know, I think it’s just because the shots don’t show the right view. Love to see one.

Well 27 days left……
Time sure does fly.
Looking forward to more updates,
Bob

Just a note; at the end of the campaign I will be cleaning out the files so copy when you have the chance.

Greetings Bob and fellow campaigners. Non modelling necessities have had me away for a bit but I finally had an opportunity to get back to the M4. I've experimented with Bob's method of just applying gloss coat to the decal areas. My first attempt at using it on the gun barrel worked like a charm. Unfortunately when I applied the gloss to the port side of the tank it lifted some of the base coat. As I was also starting some weathering that fell victim also So in that area it was one step forward and two steps back. I'll have time to devote myself to repairing the damage over the next couple of days. BTW, I had a look back at the pages I missed and I must say there are some really fabulous builds being done here.

Here's a couple of pictures for pictures sake.

Cheers,
Jan

Thanks Russ,

I'll assume the Camo IS on the upper surfaces...

I've applied the Buff tonight and will touch it up over the next couple of nights

Sorry to hear about your problems, Jan. It does not look too bad from the pictures. Hope you can fix it.

I am also building "Donna" from Tarawa.

Looking forward to see more.

Jesper,
Glad to see you’re still at it. Just wanted you to know that yes “Donna” is the same kind of tank used at Tarawa, “Donna” better known as “Destroyer” is actually in Guam:

and again at Iwo Jima.
IWO

Main Difference is in the markings and no rear water can rack as the ones at Tarawa.
Looking forward to seeing your work,
Bob
